CHAPTER 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
Introduction
Attendance of the students in their respective school is one of the main factor of
having an effective education for them to attend their classes and have new knowledge
that they may acquire. One of the reasons why the students are failing is because of their
number of absence in class. Especially for the junior high school students now that all of
the school is very strict when it comes to the attendance of the students, it may play a big
role when it comes to the student’s grades. Attendance in lectures is identified as one of
the determinants of student performance attending classes yields a positive impact on
exam performance
The student’s needs to focus on their studies so therefore, they must be present in
their classes in order to achieve their agenda. Some scenarios, the students love to be
absent because the class is said to be boring and that causes them to cut classes.
La Immaculada Concepcion School is one of the oldest private schools in Pasig
city where most students get highly educated especially in mathematics. This school is
very active when it comes to outside activities, and extra-curricular activities that make
students active. Also, the school provides the best teacher that they can accept in the
school and that makes it great.

A study conducted by ( Marburger, 2006) found that students who missed class on
a given date were significantly more likely to respond incorrectly to questions relating to
material covered on that day than those who were present. Another study conducted by
(Stanca, 2006) also concluded that after controlling for unobservable student
characteristics, attendance has a statistically significant and quantitatively relevant effect
on student learning. Various authors concluded in their studies that, in the education or in
academia, class attendance has significant impact on how the students perform and
succeed in their class and in their studies as a whole.
Other studies state that one of the reason why the students are keep on absenting
is bullying. Being bullied is one common reason why students seek to avoid school.
Academic struggle is another. If a student feels like he’s constantly failing, that he’s
different or not as smart as his peers, he may try to get out of going to school.
A negative school environment can also be a factor. It’s hard enough for a student
who’s struggling to stay motivated to attend school. But if he doesn’t feel understood, or
is constantly being disciplined, he may start to resist going to school.
The general objective of this study is to find out the impact of student’s
absenteeism on the academic performance of Junior High School students in La
Immaculada Concepcion School. The researcher’s aims to determine if this could serve as
a vital information aimed at showing the relationship that exist between the performance
of students and the student’s absenteeism in La Immaculada Concepcion School.

The researcher’s main purpose is to increase the awareness of the students about
the absenteeism by informing the possible effects on their academic performance. The
research will be beneficial to the students of the institution of La Immaculada
Concepcion School as long as the other school for them to realize the factors of being
absent in class.
