Instructional Software
Universal Design for Learning (UDL):
BrainPop supports and enhances the learning experience for students in the classroom by offering a wide
variety of content. The videos provided are a great way to represent the content in a different way that
most software's do not offer. BrainPop also supports ELL students by using different languages so no
child will be left behind. Each student has access from home and can spend as much time on the topic as
needed. Parents also have access to BrainPop so they can help their child practice at home. BrainPop also
helps build vocabulary in students by showing them a wider range of more complex words. This software
also supports the Flipped classroom model. Students can work at home and a struggling learner can look
over the information at home and be better prepared for class. It also offers adaptable content for
visually impaired learners and auditory impaired learners by offering closed captions, transcripts, and
sound.
Lesson idea implementation:
The BrainPop video (https://jr.brainpop.com/math/geometry/congruentandsimilarshapes/) will be used to
introduce the idea of congruent and similar shapes. The teacher will lead a discussion of the difference
between congruent and similar shapes. She will encourage students to identify various shapes and decide
which are similar or congruent. After watching the video, the teacher will bring out a variety of shapes and
student will be grouped at different tables. Each group will get a selection of shapes and they will work
together to discuss which they think are similar and congruent. The teacher will walk around the class and
scaffold them by guiding them towards the right answers. The teacher will then talk to the whole class and
show them what the correct answers were by explaining why each shape was classified the way it was. The
students will then gather, and the teacher will use a game BrainPop offers with the lesson to classify shapes.
After the class has reviewed shapes together, they will each work independently to pick out different shape
cutouts and glue them on to a piece of construction paper. They will be encouraged to glue similar and
congruent shapes next to each other, but they can glue the shapes down how they wish. They will also be
supplied with markers and decorations for their paper to make it their own. The teacher will then go around
the room and speak to each student about the shapes in order to assess where they stand on the subject. The
class will each use their assigned iPad to use the drawing tool to practice drawing various shapes. She will then
explain the topic further to any students that are struggling. The students will then get a worksheet to take
home to color in different shapes at their own leisure. The parents will also be informed of various apps their
children could play with at home.
Reflective Practice:
The lesson could be extended by taking each work of art the student’s created and posting it in the hallway
outside the classroom. Students will walk past the hallway each day and be reminded of the lesson and see a
visual of the different ways to classify shapes. To further extend the lesson, we could have allowed students to
draw different shapes on the board. The teacher could draw a shape on the board and each student could
have their own whiteboard and draw that same shape. The teacher can use an interactive white board to
create shapes using the shape tool. This will give students a visual of various shapes. They could come up the
the board and create shapes too. Other technology tools that could enhance the lesson would be any math
software designed for K-3 learners.
