III. Topic Title:
Lipids
Lipids is the second type of biomolecules that can be found in hormones and
cell membrane component. Lipids have the job of storing energy for later use. Lipids
have structural types such as carboxylic acids or fatty acids, triglycerides or neutral fats,
steroids, and waxes.
Lipids are water insoluble molecules that are composed of carbon, hydrogen
and oxygen. Fats and oils are triglycerides that are combinations of glycerol and three
fatty acids.
IV. Summary:
Fats and Oils – The most abundant lipids.
Fats are solid at room temperature and contain saturated fatty acids.
Lard and Butter are examples of animal fats.
Oils are liquids at room temperature and contain unsaturated fatty acids
Vegetable oil, corn oil, and olive oil are oils that have been produced by
plants.
Steroids are another class of lipids whose molecules are composed of
fused rings of atoms.
Cholesterol is considered as the most important steroid.
Cholesterol is a sterol because of the presence of alcohol or the
hydroxyl functional group.
Cholesterol is found mainly in animal cells although cell membranes of
plants may contain small quantities of cholesterol as well as its major
derivatives.
Cholesterol plays an important role in eukaryotes and especially
abundant in cell membranes of animal cells.
Calorie is a unit of heat energy.
Calories are provided by fats, carbohydrates, and proteins.
Fats have the higher concentration of calories.
