Chapter 9

The document discusses hydrodynamics and provides solutions to example problems involving forces exerted by flowing water. It defines equations for calculating dynamic and static forces on fixed and moving objects from water flow. Example problems are solved for determining jet velocities, heights supported by water pressure, and forces on objects from impinging water jets of given flow rates and diameters.

pipe in the bow of boat at 2 m/s and emitted through a 200 mm diameter pipe
in the stern.

2. A 300 mm diameter pipe is connected to a 600 mm diameter water main by a

reducer. The velocity at the 300 mm pipe being 5 m/s and the pressure is 420
kPa. Neglect losses, find the resultant force exerted by water on the reducer.

3. A jet having a diameter of 50 mm and a velocity of 15 m/s is deflected by a

vane which is curved through an angle of 60o and which is moving with a
velocity of 6 m/s in the same direction as the jet. Determine the X and Y
components of the force exerted by the jet and its direction and velocity as it
leaves the vane.

4. A jet of water flowing at the rate of 0.12 m3/s hits a vertical building wall
horizontally at close range with a force of 7000N. Determine the diameter of
the jet in mm.

5. A hose and nozzle discharges a horizontal water jet against a nearby vertical
plate. The flow rate of water is 0.03 m3/s, and the diameter of the nozzle tip is
30 mm. find the horizontal force necessary to hold the plate in place.
