CHEMICAL ENGINEERING
i
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
The oil and gas industry, especially in my field of training (Well Services – Coiled Tubing)
Maintenance department, seems to be distant to me at first, it was overwhelming, I have
long struggled to find the correlation between the things that I’ve known in the past studies,
and the things I see real-time in the industry. However, that’s one of the remarkable things
in life, where people have to jump out their comfortable zone to make life better. Throughout
the journey of my training, I manage to trace a fine line of relations between the oil and gas
industry, and my theoretical as well as practical knowledge in Chemical Engineering.
To begin with I am very thankful to the Schlumberger Recruiting Manager, Mr. Chua Han
Jim for selecting and giving me such a brilliant opportunity to experience an internship
program with Schlumberger. It was always been my dream of interning here in
Schlumberger. Moreover, I would like to express gratitude to my Supervisor, Mohd
Fhairouz Merza Abu Samah and my Manager Coiled Tubing, Ignatius Sorman for giving
me endless sustenance and direction, for always lending me his time and patience to
straighten out all the paths that seems bent.
Being part of the biggest names in industry, I doubt I could survive on my own. I have come
to known that being just independent, just won’t pull through in the industry, it’s time
consuming and time is money, no doubt-this is a business, put it in whichever context as
you may, the truth is it’s a business that revolves around retaining the quality. It’s a deep
blue ocean down here, you have to work together as a team, it’s not about being “survival
of the fittest”. Truth to be told, being co-dependent is important.
ii
For such, I would like to express my utmost gratitude towards my fellow colleagues, the
engineers, as well as the operators for constantly helping me, continuously giving me
guidance and support until the very day. I learn new things every single day, things that I
never thought would make sense. “Knowledge is to be sought, not just merely to be gained”.
With the given support and guidance, my learning experience throughout the entire months
has been nothing but a rocking boat in the seas; it’s rough but I believe that passion goes
well with motivation when it comes to reaching an objective.

INTERNSHIP TRAINING REPORT
1.0 INTRODUCTION
Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) was established with the objective to produce well-
rounded graduates who are not only technically competent but also possess other traits such as
lifetime learning capacity, critical thinking, communication and behavioural skills, business
acumen, practical aptitude and solution synthesis ability. The institution has peaked itself
worldwide, with proven success along the years of excellence.
As one of the diverse learning institutions that is available locally, the institution thrives to
excel in various aspects which to provide a state-of-the-art facility for its student as well as to
produce well rounded students, who are innovative and creative with the potential to become
the leading leaders in the industry. For such, it is not just by the standards of academia. Thus,
the management implements the concept of active learning in its highly dense academia
environment.
In line with the vision to close the industry gap, UTP has made it compulsory for its
undergraduate students to undergo practical work in the form of a twenty-eight (28) – week
industrial attachment prior to their completion of studies at UTP to put their in-class theories
into practice and further learn extra-curricular skills provided by the host company or other
institution as part of the graduating credits. Student Industrial Internship Program (SIIP) will
provides opportunity to the students to experience the real working environment of the
industry. Moreover. the students will develop skills in work ethics, communication,
management and working in a team. SIIP shall carry seven (14) credit hours and it segregated
by two phases, Student Internship Training (SIT) and Student Internship Program (SIP), both
commences for an equal period of four months each, thus a total of eight months will be
dedicated towards the internship period.
1
Student Industrial Training (SIT)
The first phase of the SIIP is the SIT. During the brief period of time, we are expected to get
our first-hand exposure in the industry, the company premises and how the company works in
order to strike goals at the end of the day. During this stage, it is important to emphasize on the
values that circulates around the HSE, the organizational members, and their respective
playmakers, and the standard of the operation that goes on day by day. As a trainee, work
doesn’t goes by easily without few challenges. We are expected to dwell ourselves into the
business and easily without few challenges. We are required to dwell ourselves into the
business and operation by working closely and share ideas and thoughts with fellow
playmakers of the business.
Upon the training stage, we are required to use our both skills such as practical skills and soft
skill on maximum level in order to solve unexpected problems and carrying out tasks at work.
Moreover, student also expected to gain useful skills, knowledge and actively learn everyday
during the training. Our milestone and progress can be further followed by the progress weekly
report known as Logbook. In a conclusion, SIT serves a platform for us to better understand
the working culture and immense ourselves in real-world corporate situation so then we are
well-prepared for the mechanism behind the industry. At the end of the training, the university
provided supervisor to make a short visit to our host company for evaluation on our progress
and sharing session via oral presentation.
2
Student Industrial Project (SIP)
The second phase of the internship program is covered by the SIP. During the period of SIP,
students are required to handle a project in relation to the host company. By this time, students
are already exposed to the working culture and hence making this period of time conductive
for the conduction of project.
In addition, the objective of the project has to be directed towards encouraging the students to
actively participate in terms of improving certain aspects of the company that will further
benefit them. Thus, it may include several aspects such as assistance in the management line
or the operational line itself.
The host company may assign a certain project for the student to work on or maybe the students
could propose their own ideas for a project and awaits the approval from their respective
manager. Thru my journey here, in Schlumberger WTA, I have been exposed to the ups and
downs of oil and gas sector, primarily in that upstream stage. For such, I will be looking forward
to contribute to any projects that will further improvised or enhanced the process operation
within the WS Coiled Tubing Segment, Maintenance Department, here in Kemaman Supply
Base.

2.0 GENERAL OVERVIEW OF SCHLUMBERGER
2.1 Introduction to Schlumberger
Schlumberger was found in 1926 by French brothers Conrad and Marcel Schlumberger as the
Societe de prospection electrique (French: Electric Prospectic Company). The company
recorded the first-ever electrical resistivity well log in Merkwiller-Pechelbronn, France in
1927. Today Schlumberger supplies the petroleum industry with services such as seismic
acquisition and processing, formation evaluation, well testing and directional drilling, well
cementing and stimulation, artificial lift, well completions, flow assurance and consulting, and
software and information management. The company is also involved in the groundwater
extraction and carbon capture and storage industries.
The brothers had experience conducting geophysical surveys in countries such as Romania,
Canada, Serbia, South Africa, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and the United States.
The new company sold electrical-measurement mapping services, and recorded the first-ever
electrical resistivity well log in Merkwiller-Pechelborn, France in 1927. The company quickly
expended, logging its first well in the U.S. in 1929, in Kern Country, California. In 1935, the
Schlumberger Well Surveying Corporation was founded in Houston, later evolving into
Schlumberger Well Services, and finally Schlumberger Wireline & Testing.

Over the years, Schlumberger continued to expand its operations and acquisition. In 1960,
Dowell Schlumberger (50% Schlumberger, 50% Dow Chemical), which specialized in
pumping services for the oil industry, was formed. In 1962, Schlumberger Limited became
listed on the New York Stock Exchange. That same year, Schlumberger purchased Daystrom,
an electronic instruments manufacture in South Boston, Virginia which was making furniture
by the time the division was sold to Sperry & Hutchinson in 1971. Schlumberger purchased
50% of Forex in 1964 and merged it with 50% of Languedocienne to create the Neptune
Drilling Company. The first computerized reservoir analysis, SARABAND, was introduced in
1970. The remaining 50% of Forex was acquired the following year; Neptune was renamed
5
Forex Neptune Drilling Company. In 1979, Fairchild Camera and Instrument (including
Fairchild Semiconductor) became a subsidiary of Schlumberger Limited.
Figure 3: An engineer Observes log of Impulsive Potential During Exploration for USS
Thresher, 1963
Schlumberger established the first international data links with e-mail in 1981. In 1983,
Schlumberger opened their Cambridge Research Center in Cambridge, England and in 2012 it
was renamed the Schlumberger Gould Research Center after the company’s former CEO
Andrew Gould.
The SEDCO drilling rig company and half of Dowell of North America were acquired in 1984.
Resulting in the creation of the Anadrill drilling segment, a combination of Dowell and The
Analysts drilling segments. Forex Neptune was merged with SEDCO to create the Sedco Forex
6
Drilling Company the following year, when Schlumberger purchased Merlin and 50% of
GECO.
In the 1970s, the company’s top executives in North America were relocated to New York
City. In 1987, Schlumberger complete their purchase of Neptune (North America), Bosco and
Cori (Italy), and Allmess (Germany). That same year, National Semiconductor acquired
Fairchild Semiconductor from Schlumberger for $122 million. In 1991, Schlumberger acquired
PRAKLA-SEISMOS, and pioneered the use of geosteering to plan the drill path in horizontal
wells. In 1995, Schlumberger launched Integrated Project Management (IPM) which today
continues to provide the expertise and processes required to improve performance and increase
efficiency by integrating all the oilfield services and technologies needed by a project.
Coiled tubing (CT) is a generic name often used for coiled tubing services (CTS).
Schlumberger has over 200 CT units worldwide, making it the largest provider of CT services
in the world. Operationally, a CT intervention involves pushing a coiled tubing string into an
oil or gas well to perform work without disturbing the existing well completion. The ability to
pump through the CT string allows many different types of operations be carried out. At the
end of a CT operation, the CT string is pulled out of the well and spooled back onto the CT
reel.
7
Figure 4: CTU Terms
CT technology is based on the use of the CT string, which is a continuous flexible steel tube
that is spooled on a reel for transport and storage. The reel is a part of the coiled tubing unit
(CTU). At surface, the end of the CT string is connected to a high-pressure swivel joint on
the reel hub so that fluids can be pumped through the string continuously if necessary. The
CT string is run into and retrieved from the wellbore by the injector head. The injector head
is controlled hydraulically from the CT cabin by the CTU operator. The hydraulic system
gives the operator a high degree of control over the position and movement of the CT string.
A stripper assembly is mounted below the injector head. This assembly provides a dynamic
seal around the tubing string, which means that the CT string can be run and retrieved on
live wells. The blowout preventer (BOP) assembly is mounted between the stripper and the
wellhead. This provides secondary and contingency pressure control functions. The CTU is
operated from the control cabin, which is designed as a single point control and monitoring
station for the primary functions of the CTU and auxiliary equipment.
8
Coiled tubing (CT) was developed to perform remedial work on live wellbores such as A
continuous conduit that can be inserted into the well and allow fluid conveyance, A means of
running and retrieving the string from the well under pressure and act as A device capable of
providing a dynamic seal during any operation. The first fully functioning coiled tubing unit
(CTU) was developed in California (1962) by Bowen Tools Company to wash out sand in the
wells in the Gulf Coast.

30
3.0 WORKS EXPERIENCE
Moreover, another important lesson I learnt was choice of words played a significant role in
having a conversation with colleagues in Schlumberger. This was because source of network
solely depended on how I managed to initiate a conversation in a friendly and polite manner
while being inquisitive at the same time. Therefore, after being exposed to the real work
environment, I slowly developed my ability to initiate a conversation with colleagues to
exchange greetings, ideas, values, beliefs and perspectives in a courteous and proper manner.

3.1.2 Time Management
Every oil and gas company treat every second as gold and wish to generate a higher revenue
within a shortest time duration and cost-effective conditions. Therefore, time management
allows me to effectively cope with all the important assignments given without affecting my
work life balance. Even as a vacation trainee in Schlumberger, I learnt that the proper way to
manage my time wisely was firstly identifying the summary, purpose and duration given for a
given tasks. Next, I decided to construct a suitable timeline to ensure my progress was on the
right track and did not delay in the last minutes. By contributing bit by bit every day, every
small accomplishment counted for my overall success when I completed my assignments. A
high-valued result had always been appreciated in Schlumberger company so a wise time
management was one of the essential elements in achieving success. Despite working hours in
WS Coiled Tubing, Maintenance Department have always been from 8.30am to 5.30pm, I
sometimes would voluntarily to work extra miles to enrich myself with different applications
exposures and knowledge.

3.2 Knowledge
The indicators for Well Services are derived directly from data captured in Maximo and
iDistrict. Data from Work Orders, Asset Records, Preventive Maintenance Scheduling, Part
Records, and iDistrict Job Reports are combined to establish a baseline for each maintenance
operation around the world.
33
The purpose for Maximo used in all Well Services facilities is to document the tasks performed
by the maintenance department and to manage equipment records and certifications. The
requirements for using Maximo to record maintenance activities are an essential building block
that supports the rest of the maintenance performance indicators detailed in this document. In
our experience, other than check the record maintenance activities for instance STEM 2 and
STEM 3, we also manage to create the Defiency Report (DR) and Preventive Maintenance by
using Maximo application. The definition of DR (Deficiency Report) is processing guidelines
require that driver and STEM-I reports are addressed in a timely manner. All outstanding DRs
must be addressed during a STEM 2 interval. On the other hand, Preventive maintenance is the
backbone of any quality maintenance program. Addressing the needs of the equipment before
a problem happens is more cost effective than waiting for failure to occur. Preventing failures
from occurring on client locations is one way the maintenance organization can make a direct
positive impact on Service Quality. As per Well Services KSQR, no unit should be used on a
job when the planned preventive maintenance (STEM-2) has not been performed, unless an
approved exemption is available. In addition, STEM2 rates will be captured on a daily basis,
and monthly results will be the average of the data from each day of the month.
• Cat-1 equipment is primarily the responsibility of the maintenance function due the
competencies required to repair and maintain the mechanical and electronic systems and
components of the equipment.
• Cat-2 equipment does not require specialized mechanic, mechanical or electronic
competencies. The maintenance function and Operations work together to provide the
required preventive maintenance and repairs.

Any component not meeting the requirements of this guideline must be taken out of service
and repaired or destroyed. In our experienced, we are person in charge for LTO Critical
Pressure-Control Equipment (PCE) in WS segment, Kemaman base which our job is to
maintaining the registry for each type of LTO equipment in correct, up-to-date and compliant
form. Critical PCE is that equipment which is connected to the wellhead for the purpose of
controlling the wellbore or applied pressure during any operation. Moreover, Critical PCE
includes all components from the wellhead to the first isolation valve. In addition, there are
353 critical pressure-control equipment in WS Coiled-Tubing segment, Kemaman base which
includes:
• BOPs
• Strippers
• Risers
• Flanges
• Other equipment used for the control of pressure on the wellhead

4.0 DISCUSSION ON SUSTAINABILITY
4.1 Environmental
“My role as an environmental auditor is not just about compliance at one sit. It’s to assess and
improve the environmental performance of the EMS group globally. I am to provide support
and coaching to HSE personnel in order to bring about improvements and to raise
environmental awareness within our organization.” As discussed by the Environmental
Manager for the Engineering, Manufacturing, and Sustaining (EMS) organization and part of
the company’s Lead Environmental auditors.
Moreover, Schlumberger comprises of 65 top environmental auditors who evaluate over 550
sites in total. As an effort to support, and to guarantee consistent measurements, the eco-
friendly management team utilizes a Compliance Audit Tool (CAT) which governs six major
areas of risk including the management of environmental, waste and resource management,
legal compliance, site history, spill prevention and control.
For the past eight decades, Schlumberger has been aiding information to produce the best
solutions that improvises the performance and henceforth, rigging up the company to the top
notch, further expanding our technical abilities in design and engineering of outcomes that
helps our clients in effort to reduces environmental impacts. The application of the company’s
Global Environmental Standard has brought out significant advancements in innovation,
specifically in waste water management.
Schlumberger makes it crucial practice to promote acts of sustainability in every deemed aspect
possible as one of the big steps to save the environment. Locally, in Schlumberger Kemaman,
recycle dustbins are made available and accessible around the base. These bins are sorted
according to their waste category for instance paper, glass, and plastic. Besides, oil bunkers are
also available in the base specifically for proper disposal of grease, diesel collected or wasted
from the different segment. The disposal process is property supervised by the responsible
party, which is the HSE segment.
36
4.2 Economical
As one of the major playmakers in the multinational oil and gas services company,
Schlumberger has taken steps to offer top-notch services for its customers while at the same
time, maintaining the networking with the participating shareholders and stakeholders.
Annually, Schlumberger will release the Annual Reports and Proxies to be reflected by the
investors and also the public so that parties are aware of the financial status held by
Schlumberger over the course of annum. Stock exchanges were also displayed for the public
interest as well to attract investments from new investors to the company.
37
4.3 Political and Cultural Dimension
Working in Schlumberger Kemaman has opened the doors for me to interact and work with
people from various backgrounds. Working in a diverse workforce also enables me to exchange
my opinions, and skills that will further benefit Schlumberger and in turns promoting a room
for self-development.

5.0 CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION
Getting the first-hand exposure in the Oil and Gas industry throughout my SIT period has
brought new experiences to me. I have learnt so many challenging things, the challenges I have
faced differs a lot from the challenges in the past, transitioning from university life to the
working sector.
Hence, Schlumberger has proven itself to be a great host company for student to undergo their
training as the company provides a breakthrough, yet comprehensive training for student to
develop. The oil and gas industry may seem like a daunting challenge for students that came
from non-petroleum background, but the challenges are the things that has reeled me to strive
for success and improvement. As the quoted by the George S. Patton Jr., “Pressure makes
diamonds”. Hence like diamonds, it is important not to crack under pressure to ensure that work
could be done efficiently.
I have acquired several engineering skills and well as soft skiils which could further be used in
the future studies and career life, working here also has taught me the wonders of persistence
and continuous studying, how having a good communication and teamwork could lead to
success. In the midst of the journey, I have come to fully understand and implement how
different dynamics of engineering helps to build a company, as successful as Schlumberger.
For such, living co-dependently is crucial to achieve the many milestones of success.
Succinctly, I am grateful for the given opportunity to conduct my SIT in one of the best
companies in the industry. In addition, Schlumberger has opened up new doors for me to
explore. It is definitely a good experience to land my foot into the working life, having to work
under the wings of Schlumberger, as well as in the WS Coiled Tubing segment, Maintenance
department.
