Exercise Set 5.
2: Correlation
1. The scores x on a pretest for a college algebra course and the course grade y were recorded for 10
students. The results are:
x 75 81 57 79 68 93 96 84 41 89
y 2 3 1 2 1 4 4 3 1 3
a. Present a scatter plot for the data.
b. Determine the correlation coefficient for the data and interpret the value.
2. The number of motor vehicles registered (in millions) in the U.S. has grown as follows:
Year 1940 1945 1950 1955 1960 1965 1970 1975 1980 1985
Vehicles 32.4 31.0 49.2 62.7 73.9 90.4 108.4 132.9 155.8 171.7
a. Present a scatter plot for the data. (Hint: let x = 0 represent the year 1940)
b. Determine the correlation coefficient for the data and interpret the value.
3. The frying time of food x and the amount of moisture retained when done frying y are recorded as
follows:
Frying time, x 5 10 15 20 25 30 45 60
Moisture, y 16.3 9.7 8.1 4.2 3.4 2.9 1.9 1.3
a. Present a scatter plot for the data.
b. Determine the correlation coefficient for the data and interpret the value.
In questions 4-7, estimate the correlation coefficient for each scatterplot. Choose from the
following: -0.98, -0.85. -0.42, 0.42, 0.85, 0.98

8. Does a correlation coefficient of 0 mean the variables are not related? Is it possible to create the graph
of a bivariate data set in which the variables are obviously related and the value of r is approximately
equal to 0? If so, do it. If not, explain why it is not possible.
