Studies
A Collection From Various Sources
Based on the Teachings of
Vincent Cichowicz
Compiled and Edited

and Charies Geyer
For Educational Purposes OnlyFORWORD
These studies are an important medium in which to develop a free,
exible production of sound upon which all aspects of trumpet
technique depend. It would be a mistake to view them solely as a means
fo develop finger dexterity, Herbert L. Clarke. who deplored so called
“Jong tone” studies, espoused the practice of material with movement
instead of long tones (ie; Technical Studies) and is the forefather of
this concept, These studies are an extension and elaboration of this
Principle. They are most effective when practiced at moderate speeds,
taking care to produce a clear flexible sound, and that the connection of
the notes be smooth and without distortion. I view finger dexterity as a
collateral benefit rather than the main purpose of these eludes. Further
benefit may be had by utilizing varied articulations and transpositions,

OCoryrien 1978 by the tmternstional Trumpets Gail AW eapaIe sererved. Ubed by permission,‘This transcription, of the Adagio from Bach's Sonata No. 1 in G minor (for solo violin) was done by
James McKee while he was a student of mine at Indiana University, The change of key (o E minor is appro-
priate for B-flat or C trumpet. This transcription serves 2 pedagogical rather than a soloistic purpose.
Through the inherent beauty of Bach's melodie writing, the Adagio can be used to develop musical sen
sitivity (o phrasing and endurance.
Thave fotind this piece useful to my students, and throveh, this IG publication and Mr. McKee's willing:
ness to share this transcription, it is hoped that many others will enjoy this work
