can she process in a seven and one half hour day?
Solution: 1200
she can process 1200 cheques in 7 1/2hours
1/2=80 450min=7 1/2 450/30=15 80*15=1200
Question 2: In a library, there are two racks with 40 books per rack. On a given
day, 30 books were issued. What fraction remained in the racks?
Solution: ⅝ ⅝
total book in rack eqals 80 if 30 book issued
remaining book 50
fraction eqals 50/80 eqals 5/8
Question 3: The average length of three tapes is 6800 feet. None of the tapes is
less than 6400 feet. What is the greatest possible length of one of the other
tapes?
Solution: AS THE MINIMUM LENGTH IS 6400,
THE 2 TAPES CAN BE OF LENGTH 6400, SO THE NEXT ONE WILL BE

1
MAX= (6800*3)-(2*6400)=7600
Question 4: A company rented a machine for Rs.700/- a month. Five years later
the treasurer calculated that if the company had purchased the machine and
paid Rs.100/- monthly maintenance charge, the company would have saved
Rs.2000/-. What was the purchase price of the machine?
Solution: 34000
The company have already paid 700 Rs per month for 5yr. That means total Rs
paid is=700*(12 months)*(5 yr)=42,000Rs.
Now,
if company purchased it , its only have to pay 100 Rs per month for 1 yr.
That means= 100*(12 months)=1200Rs.
They give condition as, if it pays this he company will save 2000 Rs.
42,000(already paid for 5 yr) + 1200(company have to pay for 1 yr)=
2000(company saves)
42,000+1200-2000=0
42,000-8000=34,000Rs
Question 5: Two computers each produced 48000 public utility bills in a day.
One computer printed bills at the rate of 9600 an hour and the other at the rate
of 7800 an hour. When the first computer finished its run, how many bills did
the other computer still have to print?
Solution: 9000
48000=9600*Hour
Hour =5

7800*5=39000

48000-39000=9000

ans 9000
Question 6: If a salesmans average is a new order every other week, he will break
the office record of the year. However, after 28 weeks, he is six orders behind
schedule. In
what proportion of the remaining weeks does he have to obtain a new order to

2
break the record?
Solution: ¾
no f weeks in a yr=52
26 orders required for the creation f record..
son after 28 weeks no f order should b 14..
the person z short by 8 orders ..
dat means in the nxt 24 weeks he need to cllct 18(26-8) orders
so proportion f order to remaining weeks z 18/24= 3/4
Question 7: On a given day, a bank had 16000 cheques returned by
customers. Inspection of the first 800 cheques indicated that 100 of those 800
had errors and were therefore the available immediately for data processing. On
this basis, how many cheques would be available immediately for data
processing on that day?

Solution: 14000
It is given for every 800 cheques 100 are error so (800-100)=700 error free total
16000 cheques so dividing them into 800 in each we get (16000/800)=20 so 20
sets of cheques (each 800) where each set has 700 error free so 20*700=14000 is
the answer
Question 8: A tape manufacturer reduces the price of his heavy duty tape from
Rs.30/- to Rs.28/- a reel and the price of a regular tape from Rs.24/- to Rs.23/- a
reel. A computing centre normally spends Rs.1440/- a month for tapes and 3/4 of
this is for heavy duty tapes. How much will they save a month under the new
prices?
Solution: 87
Total Expenditure on tapes=Rs.1440 Total Expenditure on heavy duty tapes=
3/4*1440=Rs.1080 Total reels of heavy duty tape=1080/30=36 Total savings on
heavy duty tape=36*(30-28)=Rs.72 Total Expenditure on regular tapes=1/4*
1440=Rs.360 Total reels of regular tape=360/24=15 Total savings on regular
tape=15*(24-23)=Rs.15 Total Savings=Rs.72+Rs.15=Rs.87
Question 9: The dimensions of a certain machine are 48 X 30 X 52. If the size of
the machine is increased proportionately until the sum of its dimensions equals
156, what will be the increase in the shortest side?
Solution: 6
48+30+52=130, then 156-130=26 the "proportionately" in the shortest side
means 30/130*26=6"

Question 10: In a certain company, 20% of the men and 40% of the women
attended the annual company picnic. If 35% of all the employees are man, what
percent of all the employees went to the picnic?
Solution: 33%
Suppose that total 100 employees are in company..... out of that 35 are man
and remaining 65 are women. 20% of man 35 = 20*35/100
40% of women = 40*65/100
total employees = 7+26 = 33 out of 100
so, Ans = 33 %
Question 11: It cost a college Rs.0.70 a copy to produce a Programme for
the homecoming football game. If Rs.15,000/- was received for advertisements in
the programme, how many copies at Rs.0.50 a copy must be sold to make a
profit of Rs.8000/- ?
Solution: 35000
Copy is sold at loss =0.70-0.50=0.20
Even then a profit of 8000 is made.
Let N be no. of copies.
Therefore,
(N*0.2)+8000=15000
N*0.20=7000
N=35000
So 35000 copies sold
Question 12: If the digits of my present age are reversed then i get the age of my
son. If 1 year ago my age was twice as that of my son. Find my present age.
Solution: father-73, son-37
My age : 10x+y
Son age : 10y+x

so 10x+y = 10y+x
10x+y-1 = 2(10y+x-1)
x = (19y-1)/8

4
for y=3
(19y-1) is completely divisible by 8
so x = 7

So my present age : 10*7+3 = 73

son's age : 10*3+7 = 37
Question 13: There are 6561 balls out of them 1 is heavy. Find the min. no. of
times the balls have to be weighed for finding out the heavy ball.
Solution: 8
Suppose there are 9 balls
Let us give name to each ball B1 B2 B3 B4 B5 B6 B7 B8 B9
Now we will divide all the balls into 3 groups.
Group1 - B1 B2 B3
Group2 - B4 B5 B6
Group3 - B7 B8 B9
Step1 - Now weigh any two groups. Let's assume we choose Group1 on left side of
the scale and Group2 on the right side.
So now when we weigh these two groups we can get 3 outcomes.
Weighing scale tilts on left - Group1 has a heavy ball.
Weighing scale tilts on right - Group2 has a heavy ball.
Weighing scale remains balanced - Group3 has a heavy ball.
Lets assume we got the outcome as 3. i.e Group 3 has a heavy ball.
Step2 - Now weigh any two balls from [Link] assume we keep B7 on left side
of the scale and B8 on right side.
So now when we weigh these two balls we can get 3 outcomes.
Weighing scale tilts on left - B7 is the heavy ball.
Weighing scale tilts on right - B8 is the heavy ball.
Weighing scale remains balanced - B9 is the heavy ball.
The conclusion we get from this Problem is that each time weigh. We element 2/3 of

5
the balls.
As we came to conclusion that Group3 has the heavy ball from Step1, we remove 6
balls from the equation i.e (2/3) of 9.
Simillarly we do the ame thing for the Step2.
Now going with this conclusion. We have 6561 balls.
Step - 1
Divided into 3 groups
Group1 - 2187Balls
Group2 - 2187Balls
Group3 - 2187Balls
Taking the similar steps as we did in the above example, we come to the conclusion
that Group1 has the heavy ball.
Step - 2
Divided into 3 groups
Group1 - 729Balls
Group2 - 729Balls
Group3 - 729Balls
Taking the similar steps as we did in the above example, we come to the conclusion
that Group1 has the heavy ball.
Step - 3
Divided into 3 groups
Group1 - 243Balls
Group2 - 243Balls
Group3 - 243Balls
Taking the similar steps as we did in the above example, we come to the conclusion
that Group1 has the heavy ball.
Step - 4
Divided into 3 groups
Group1 - 81Balls
Group2 - 81Balls

6
Group3 - 81Balls
Taking the similar steps as we did in the above example, we come to the conclusion
that Group1 has the heavy ball.
Step - 5
Divided into 3 groups
Group1 - 27Balls
Group2 - 27Balls
Group3 - 27Balls
Taking the similar steps as we did in the above example, we come to the conclusion
that Group1 has the heavy ball.
Step - 6
Divided into 3 groups
Group1 - 9Balls
Group2 - 9Balls
Group3 - 9Balls
Taking the similar steps as we did in the above example, we come to the conclusion
that Group1 has the heavy ball.
Step - 7
Divided into 3 groups
Group1 - 3Balls
Group2 - 3Balls
Group3 - 3Balls
Taking the similar steps as we did in the above example, we come to the conclusion
that Group1 has the heavy ball.
Step - 8
So now when we weigh 2 balls out of 3 we can get 3 outcomes.
Weighing scale tilts on left - left side placed is the heavy ball.
Weighing scale tilts on right - right side placed is the heavy ball.
Weighing scale remains balanced - remaining ball is the heavy ball.
So the general answer to this question is, it is always multiple of 3 steps.

7
For 9 balls 3232= 9. therefore 2 steps
For 6561 balls 3838 = 6561 therefore 8 steps
Question 14: If I walk with 30 miles/hr i reach 1 hour before and if i walk with
20 miles/hr i reach 1 hour late. Find the distance between 2 points and the exact
time of reaching destination is 11 am then find the speed with which it walks.
Solution: 120miles and 24 miles/hr
Let the distance be X miles. So from the above statements we have. T1= X/20;
also T2= X/30; Now according to the conditions we can form an
equation : (X-20)/20 = (X+30)/30; Ans X= 120 miles. Thius time taken in 20
miles/hr = 4 hrs and 6 hrs for 30 miles/hr. Thus in order to reach in time he
should complete it in 5 hrs,so his speed should be Ans:120/5 = 24 miles/hr.
Question 15: A thief steals half the total no of loaves of bread plus 1/2 loaf from
a bakery. A second thief steals half the remaining no of loaves plus 1/2 loaf and
so on. After the 5th thief has stolen there are no more loaves left in the bakery.
What was the total no of loaves did the bakery have at the beginning.
Solution: 31
let y be the total no. of loaves
a be the remaining loaves after 1st thief
b be the remaining loaves after 2nd thief
.
.
e = 0 be the remaining loaves after 5th thief

solution:
a = y - 0.5y - 0.5
= 0.5y - 0.5
b = a - 0.5a - 0.5
= 0.5a - 0.5
c = 0.5b - 0.5
d = 0.5c - 0.5
e = 0.5d - 0.5 but e = 0,
thus,

8
d=1
c=3
b=7
a = 15
y = 31 -> answer
Question 16: A person needs 6 steps to cover a distance of one slab. If he
increases his foot length (step length) by 3 inches he needs only 5 steps to cover
the slabs length. What is the length of the each slab.
Solution: 90 inches
Let one step length = x
slab length = 6x
6x=5 (x+3)
On solving the above eq. we get x=15
So slab length = 6x=90
Question 17: There are 19 red balls and one black ball. Ten balls are put in one
jar and the remaining 10 are put in another jar. What is the possibility that the
black is in the right jar.
Solution: ½
The probability that the Black ball is in the Right jar
= 19C9 / 20C10 = 1/2.

(there are 20C10 ways of choosing any 10 balls. Out of that there are 19C9 ways
in which the Black ball is one of them).
Question 18: The number of water lilies on a certain lake doubles every two
days. If there is exactly one water lily on the lake, it takes 60 days for the lake to
be fully covered with water lilies. In how many days will the lake be fully
covered with lilies, if initially there were two water lilies on it?
Solution: 59 days
Starting from 1 Water Lilly it takes 60 days.
If there are already two present, it can be taken as the first day is over.
It will take 59 more days.
Question 19: A lorry starts from Bangalore to Mysore at 6.00 A.M, 7.00 A.M,

9
8.00 am.....10 pm. Similarly one another starts from Mysore to Bangalore at 6.00
am,7.00 am, 8.00 am.....10.00pm. A lorry takes 9 hours to travel from Banglore
to Mysore and vice versa.
(i) A lorry which has started at 6.00 am will cross how many lorries.
Solution: 1
) A lorry beginning at 6 am reaches its destination at :

6.00 + 9 hrs

= 1500hrs = 3 P. M

This time, the 10 pm lorry arrives at 7 a.m

Therefore the trains it crosses along the way are :

The 7 am train, the 8 a. m train, the 6 a. m train and the 10 p.m

Total is : 4 lorries.
b) the time differences are :

Between 6pm and 6am = 12 hrs

6pm - 7 am = 11 hrs

6pm to 8 am = 10 hrs

6pm to 10 pm = 4 hrs

Since 4hrs < 9 hrs this lorry crosses the 10 pm lorry.

10
Hence the answer is 1 lorry.
Question 20: A person meets a train at a railway station coming daily at a
particular time . One day he is late by 25 minutes, and he meets the train 5 k.m.
before the station. If his speed is 12 kmph, what is the speed of the train?
Solution: 60kmph
- Let the pt. where the cyclist meets the car be X, which is 5 km before the
station. - As the cyclist's speed is 12 km/hr, it will take another 25 mins. for him
to reach the station. For example, if everyday he meets the car at the station at
8'o clock, then he must reach the pt. X at 7:35. But, today as he is late by 20
mins. he will be reaching X at
7:55 only. So, as the car is 5 km before the station at 7:55 and reaches the station
at 8:00, it crosses 5 km in 5 mins. So, its speet is 60 kmph.
Question 21: Type A, 12 kg of rice worth Rs. 40/kg is mixed with Type B, rice
worth Rs. 24/kg. What should be the quantity of Type B rice, if the mixture is
sold at Rs. 45/kg with 25% profit added in it?

Solution: 4kg
C.P. of the mixture = 45/1.25 = Rs. 36/kg. So, (40-36)/(36-24) = (N)/(12) ⇒ ⇒ N =
4 Kg
Question 22: A person spends 1/7th of his salary on travel,1/3rd of the remaining
on food, he then spends 1/4th of the remaining on rent. Finally he puts 1/6th of
the remaining as a monthly savings, after which he has 25000 left. What is his
salary (in Rs.)?
Solution: Rs 70000
Let M be the total salary Therefore, as per question, M × (6/7) × (2/3) × (3/4) ×
(5/6) = Rs 25000 M = Rs 70000
Question 23: Point C(x,y) divides the distance AB with point A(8,12) and point
B(16, 18) in a ratio of 3:5, with AC being shorter than BC. What are the co-
ordinates of C?
Solution: (14.5, 12.5)
x co-ordinate of C = [(5×8) + (3×16)] / (3+5) = 11 y co-ordinate of C = [(5×12) +
(3×18)] / (3+5) = 14.25 Co-ordinates of C is ( 11, 14.25 )
Question 24: How many terms of the sequence -12, -8, -4,…so on, to make a sum
of 120?
Solution: 12

11

4]. On solving this, we get n = 12
Question 25: The value of a machine depreciates from Rs 32,768 to Rs 21,952 in
three years. What is the rate % of depreciation?
Solution: 12.5% Let R be the rate of depriciation, therefore, 21952 = 32768[1-
(R/100)]3 . On solving this we get R = 12.5% Question 36: A TV set listed at Rs
3200 is sold to a retailer at a successive discount of 25% and 15%. The retailer
desires a profit of 20%, after allowing a discount of 10% to the customer. At
what price should he list the TV set (in Rs.)?
Solution: Rs 2720
The retailers C.P. = 3200 × 0.75 × 0.85 = Rs 2040. His expected S.P. = 2040 × 1.2
= Rs 2448. But S.P. is 90% of the L.P., as there is a discount of 10%. So L.P. =
2448/0.9 = Rs 2720
