Teaching Guide in English for Academic and Professional Purposes
Topic: Preparing and Implementing Research Instruments
Content Standard
The learner understands the principles and uses of surveys, experiments, and scientific observations.
Performance Standard
The learner produces a well-written report for various disciplines.
Learning Competency
The learner
1. Identifies the purpose of every research instrument;
2. Determines the advantages and disadvantages of each research instrument;
3. Constructs an example of a research instrument;
4. Conducts an interview; and
5. Presents a narrative report for the conducted interview.
Specific Learning Outcomes / Objectives
By the end of the lesson, you will have been able to:
1. Design, test, and revise research instruments;
2. Gather data through surveys, experiments, and observation; and
3. Disseminate written forms of information from surveys, experiments, and observation.
Time Allotment: 5 meetings

Teaching Guide Outline
Introduction
1. Prayer
2. Attendance
3. Goal Setting – The students are going to be told of the objectives of the lesson.
Motivation
The class will be divided into two groups. They are to imagine as if they are going to interview an actor or an
actress who plays one of the characters in their favourite TV show. Each of them is going to prepare at least 5
questions based on the two contexts indicated for each group. One group is a group of researchers who will
create a research which aims to see if actor and actresses feel an attachment to the characters they are playing
and how it happens. The other group is on a context of being a showbiz reporter. Each of them is tasked to
interview the actor/actress to get the latest news about him/her.
Instruction Delivery
The discussion will highlight on the following:
Research instruments are crucial to the validity and reliability of research results.
Erroneous instruments will result in erroneous findings.
Researchers should always observe research ethics when preparing and implementing research
instruments.

The following supplementary information may be incorporated during the discussion of the concepts:
It is important that researchers observe ethical behaviour in preparing and implementing instruments.
Below are some guidelines that students must observe:
Always have an informed consent form to be accomplished by the respondents.
Ensure confidentiality of data.
Avoid undue intrusion.
Be respectful and honest to the respondents.
Keep a respondent’s burden as low as possible.
Avoid personal harassment.
All other guidelines are being shared and solicited from the students.
Practice
The students do the activity on page 208.
Enrichment
The students do the activity on page 209. This is in fact turned into a performance task.
Evaluation
The students are going to take an exam on the use of the different research instruments. The exam is objective
with a few essay questions.
Valuing
In the field of research and academic writing, it will reach a point when someone needs to work in
confidentiality especially in the giving and administering of research instruments. The moment a respondent is
identified, it is imperative that the identity of the respondent be protected so as not to invade the personal space
of the same respondent. It is necessary for something like this to happen so that the respondents would still
welcome another conduct of another instrument.
