Choosing Your Roofing Tile: Clay Roof Tiles

Roofing tiles come in different materials and styles to suit various building needs and aesthetics. Clay and concrete are common materials for tiles, with clay being lighter but more brittle and concrete providing more durability but added weight. When choosing tiles, factors to consider include the roof design and pitch, desired appearance, budget, and local climate conditions to determine the most appropriate tile material and style. An expert should install the tiles for proper installation.

Choosing Your Roofing Tile

Roofing is an important part of a house or building. Other than protecting the people and items
inside the house, the roof contributes to the outward beauty of the house. There are many types
of roofing materials. However, tiles and iron sheets are the most commonly used roofing
materials around the world. Tiles are made in different shapes, properties, and color. The choice
of roof tiles is determined by the type of building and other aesthetic considerations. Here are
some of the most popular types of roof tiles.
Clay Roof Tiles
As the name suggests, clay roof tiles are made from clay. These tiles are lightweight and most
preferred for low budget roofing. Clay tiles are popular in many places due to their aesthetic
value for homes and other developments. Although their maintenance requirement is low, clay
tiles are brittle and need special handling. Clay tiles are eco-friendly since they are made out of
natural materials.
Concrete Roof Tiles
Concrete tiles are made out of concrete. These tiles can provide the same aesthetic value as clay
tiles. However, concrete tiles provide a higher level of durability than clay tiles. Concrete tiles are
cost-effective when looked at in terms of performance levels. The main disadvantage of concrete
tiles is their weight. Concrete tiles are heavy and therefore require a stronger roof structure to
support the weight.
The above-named are the main classes of tiles used in roof construction. However, these tiles are
made in various shapes to suit different roof specifications. Examples of these include the
interlocking tiles and low pitch tiles.
Considerations To Make When Choosing Roof Tiles
There are many factors to consider when choosing a roof tile. Some of these factors arise from
necessity, while others are from an individual’s tastes and preferences.
Roof Design
When choosing roof tiles, one should consider the properties of the roof in question. If the roof
structure is strong, concrete tiles can be used for their durability and fireproofing capabilities.
The choice of tiles is also affected by the roof pitch. Concrete tiles are heavy and therefore not
suitable for high-pitched roofs.
Aesthetic Considerations
One of the main purposes of a roof is to give a house an appealing outward impression. The
choice of roof tiles depends on how an individual wants the house to look. For a simple look, one
might consider using pantiles or plain roof tiles. Other designs, such as the Double Roman roof
tiles, give the house a complex yet appealing look.
Financial Considerations
The budget allocation for a house or building determines the type of roof tiles to be used. Some
roof tiles are very expensive to install and maintain. For instance, concrete roof tiles require a
very strong roof structure. Coming up with such roof structures is costly and might affect an
individual’s financial stability if not budgeted for. Clay tiles are relatively cheaper to install since
they are light and do not require special designs for the roof structure.
Climatic Conditions
Climatic factors of a place, such as wind speeds, determine the type of roof tiles one might use.
In areas with strong winds, interlocking roof tiles should be used to prevent them from being
blown off the roof. Clay tiles should be used in hot areas for their insulation capabilities.

Despite all the considerations, tile installation should be done by an expert for efficient results.
