Question 1:-Answer True or False For The Following Statements

Here are the steps to solve this problem: 1) The path from A to F is A->B->D->F with a total cost of 5+11+2=18 ms propagation delay. 2) Each packet takes 12 ms to transmit. 3) There are 10 packets that need to be transferred. 4) So the total time is: - Propagation delay of path (18 ms) + Transmission time of 10 packets (10 * 12 ms = 120 ms) = 18 + 120 = 138 ms Therefore, the total time to transfer the 10 packet message from A to F is 138 ms. b) Consider the same network shown in the previous part. Now assume that the

Fall Semester 2016 Incomplete Exam

February 2017 Time allowed:- 2 hrs

CSE 502 - CSE 500 Associate Prof. Dr:- Rania A. Abul
Computer Networks I Seoud
Question 1:- Answer True or False for the following statements. (21 Mark)
1. [ T ]Flow control in the data link layer provides mechanisms that control transfer
according to availability of buffers at the destination.
2. False. When a multiport repeater has some bits to send on a half-duplex Ethernet
interface, it should first wait until the channel is idle. Solution: False. The repeater
simply repeats bits, even if this causes a collision.
3. (T) On a full duplex Ethernet link, there is no CSMA/CD protocol. Solution: True. A
full duplex Ethernet link uses Ethernet physical layer but is not a shared medium link.
4. (T) DNS (Domain Name Service) runs on top of UDP.
5. [ F ] Repeater, bridge and router are of network segment interconnecting devices in a
LAN.
6. [ T ]The longer the frames or the shorter the propagation time, the higher utilization
(efficiency) can be achieved in Ethernet LANs.
7. [ F ]In CSMA/CD LANs, the amount of time that it takes to detect a collision is never
greater than the end-to-end propagation delay.
8. HTTP (HyperText Transfer Protocol) runs on top of UDP. ( F )
9. No collisions can occur when the CSMA/CD is used. FALSE
10. The physical layer is the layer closest to the transmission medium. 6) True
11. A bridge is an intermediate system for layer 2. Solution: True.
12. With an Ethernet switch, there is one collision domain per port. Solution: True.
13. A multiport repeater separates collision domains. Solution: False.
14. A router is an intermediate system for layer 3. Solution: True.
15. Ethernet bridges do not use IP addresses when deciding where to send a packet.
Solution: True. Bridges do not look at layer 3 information and are therefore said to be
multiprotocol
16. When an IP router between two Ethernet segments forwards an IP packet, it does not
modify the destination IP address. Solution: true.
17. When an IP router between two Ethernet segments forwards an IP packet, it does not
modify the destination MAC address. Solution: false.
18. When a router sends a packet towards the final destination over a full duplex Ethernet
interface, it should put as destination MAC address the MAC address of the next hop.
Solution: True.
19. [ T ]When the bit length of the link is greater than the frame length, multiple frames
can be in transit at one time.
20. When a switch sends a frame towards the final destination over a full duplex Ethernet
interface, it should put as destination MAC address the MAC address of the next hop.
Solution: False; the bridge does not modify MAC addresses.
21. When a bridge has a packet ready to send on a full-duplex Ethernet port, it listens to
the medium and waits until the medium is idle. Solution: False, there is no CSMA/CD
over full duplex Ethernet.

Question 3:-
