INTRODUCTION
Borax is one of the invaluable medicines, with very distinctive
symptomps and selective tissue action. It is not easy to forget this wonderful
drug, only when its peculiar characteristics are mastered. In old days Borax was
used with bland vehicles for treatment of sore nipples and children's sore mouth.
But Homoeopathy offered it as a medicine of great value, telling when it may or
may not be used. Kent also acknowledges the fact that Borax was one of the
main constituents amongst the domestic remedies used for all sorts of local
conditions as a soothing substance and for healing purpose.
Clinical-
Aphthae, Diarrhoea, Ear-discharge, Eye affection. Headache,
Menstrual disorders, Leucorrhoea, etc.
Spheres of Action -
It mainly acts on gastro-intestinal system, especially mouth, stomach and
rectum: female genital organs, especially vagina and vulva. Skin and blood are
not spared when the drug is used in physiological doses.
Pathogenesis –
On the mouth and other mucus membranes, it produces a state of
inflammation ulceration with too much heat and copious secretions. From the
uterus and vagina there is discharge of HOT ACRID LEUCORRHOEA. This
heat and acridity are the keynotes and characteristic pathological effects of the
drug whenever it is needed.
Constitution –
Physical make-up: Borax is especially suited to women and children with
pale earthy face, red nose of young women, lax skin and muscles, tangled and
frowsy hair.
Relation with heat and cold: Hot patient.
Miasm: Psora is in the background.
Guiding Symptoms.
1. Dread of downward motion in nearly all complaints, e.g. while
going downstairs or rapidly down hill.
2. Excessive nervousness, easily frightened by slightest noise.

3. Aphthae: mouth of the child feels hot to mother's nipple.
4. Child screams before urination (Lyco.).
5. Leucorrhoea copious, albuminous and UNNATURALLY HOT.
6. Symptoms are aggravated in warm weather and after menstruation.
7. Mind. Great anxiety. Patient is anxious about trifles. He starts at every
noise, on hearing unexpected news, from excitement, this anxiety and
nervousness are aggravated from DOWNWARD MOTION, even riding
down hill or walking downstairs.
The patient is excessively nervous. Easily frightened by the slightest noise or
an unusual sharp sound, and cough, sneeze, cry, lighting of a match, etc.
It was hysterical manifestation also. Changes from one work to another. It
has restlessness, nervousness, anxiety, and excitable state which run through the
entire drug.
Particulars -
Head –
Plica polonica (matted hair because of filth and from a parasite). Hair
becomes frowsy, tangled, splits, sticks together at the tips. If these bunches are
cut off, they form again; very difficult to be combed.
Eyes. –
Lashes turn inwards; eyelids are inflammed; eye lashes loaded with dry,
gummy exudation, agglutinated in the morning, turn inward and inflame the
eyes.
Mouth –
Aphthae in the mouth, on tongue and inside the cheeks, buccal mucus
membrane much reddened, easily bleeding during eating or when touched
prevents child from nursing, with hot mouth, cracked and bleeding tongue with
salivation. Aphthous sore mouth; worse from touch and taking salty or sour
food.
Menses –
Useful in membranous dysmenorrhoea when there is violent, labour-like
pain before and during the flow, as If the uterus would expel itself through the
vagina. Menstruation has the following characteristics :-
Time: Too early.
Quantity: Too profuse.
Character of blood: Very MUCH HOT: the flow starts meagrely, but the same
violent pain keeps on until the expulsion of the membrane.
Concomitants: Pain in the head and stomach with buzzing sound
in the ears. ;
Leucorrhoea –
Quantity: Profuse
Character of leucorrhoea –
Albuminous, starchy,'very MUCH HOT as if warm water were flowing,
very much ACRID leucorrhoea, preventing pregnancy, lasting two weeks.
Leucorrhoea white as mucus or like the white of an egg.
Baby –
Oversensitive children. Face of infant pale and clay coloured. Children
have small vesicles around the mouth and on the forehead.
This type of children often get summer complaints. There are small ulcers
appearing around the anus. Stool frequent, soft light yellow and slimy.
These children have DREAD OF DOWNWARD MOTION. When laying
the child on a couch, in cradle or a craib, the baby cries and clings to the nurse
(Cham.).
Child awakes suddenly, screaming and grasping sides of the cradle
without any apparent cause. Child has frequent urination and screams before
passing urine. Urine burns. So when it passes, the child cries, but he has desire
to urinate.
Urethra pain, as if, sore, after urinating. There is sore mouth in children.
They cannot suck the breast.
General Modalities.
Aggravation: From downward motion, from sudden slight noise, smoking,
damp cold weather, before urination.
Amelioration: Pressure, holding painful side with hand.
Relations
Antidoted by: Cham., Coffea.
Incompatible: Acet. ac, Vinegar and wine.
