Mechanics of Materials Guide

The document discusses stresses caused by combined loadings on structural members. It explains that most members experience multiple loadings simultaneously, like axial forces, shear forces, bending moments and torsional moments. The method of superposition can be used to determine the resultant stress distribution from different loads, provided the relationship between stress and loads is linear and the member's geometry does not change significantly. The document provides a three step method for combined loading analysis: 1) determine internal forces through statics, 2) compute stresses due to each force individually, 3) use superposition to determine the resultant normal and shear stresses on an element of the cross-section. It includes three example problems to analyze stresses at points on members under combined loading conditions

Lesson 14: Combined Loadings
OBJECTIVES

• Determine the combined effects of different loadings.

• Analyze/Design a member with different loadings.

STRESSES CAUSED BY COMBINED LOADINGS

In previous lessons we developed methods for determining the stress distributions in a member
subjected to either an internal axial force, a shear force, a bending moment, or a torsional moment.
Most often, however, the cross section of a member is subjected to several of these loadings
simultaneously.

the bent member ABDE of circular cross section is subjected to several forces.

In order to determine the stresses at points H and K, we need to cut the section and therefore, there will
be internal forces that will be activated to maintain the equilibrium of the body as shown.

When this occurs, the method of superposition can be used to determine the resultant stress
distribution. Recall, that the principle of superposition can be used for this purpose provided a linear
relationship exists between the stress and the loads. Also, the geometry of the member should not
undergo significant change when the loads are applied.
METHOD OF ANALYSIS

STEP 1: Statics

Determine the internal loadings on the section analyzed and determine the section properties.  NOTE:
ALL loads should act through the centroid of the section

STEP 2: Stress

Compute for the stresses due to EACH of the internal forces

STEP 3: Superposition

Determine the resultant normal and shear stress components and show the results on an element* or as
a distribution of stress acting over the cross-section.

• NOTE: Directions of stresses must always be considered when applying principle of superposition

PROBLEM 1

The solid rod shown has a radius of 20 mm. If it is subjected to the force of 2 kN, determine the state of
stress at point A.
PROBLEM 2

For horizontal flexural member AB, determine the state of stress at points H and K, as shown in the
figures.

PROBLEM 3

A vertical pipe column with an outside diameter of 325 mm and a wall thickness of 10 mm supports the
loads shown. Determine the state of stress at points H and K.
