English students at B2 level have some problems dealing with question Auxiliary Verbs
forms. But firstly…

What are auxiliary verbs?


• am/are/is/was/were

• can/could

Auxiliary verbs are verbs that we put in front of the main verb, which
add to or change the meaning of it (the main verb). For example:
• do/did/does

• have/has/had

main verb
I go to the gym in the morning.
(present habit/routine)
• may/might

• must

• should

main verb
I may go to the gym in the morning.
(possibility) • will

auxiliary verb
• would

main verb
I should go to the gym in the morning.
(obligation/personal duty)

Grammar: Question Forms

Auxiliary Verbs
1. When we have questions with an auxiliary verb, the subject
must always follow it (the auxiliary verb):
• am/are/is/was/were

• can/could

Where was Lauren while we were doing the washing?

Where Lauren was while we were doing the washing? • may/might

• must

What time must I turn the oven on? • should

2. When we ask a question about the person or thing who performed the action,
we use subject/object questions:

a. Subject Questions

When who/what/which is the subject of the sentence, we don’t use do/does/did:

Who bought that house? - Robert bought that house.


subject NOT
Who did buy that house?

b. Object Questions

When who/what/which is the object of the sentence, we use do/does/did:

What car did Robert buy? - Robert bought a BMW


object NOT
What car Robert bought?
on, to, at, in, for, behind, above, etc.

3. When we have a preposition in questions beginning with Who/What/


Where/Which, this preposition must go at the end of the clause:

Who are you waiting for?


NOT
For who are you waiting?

Where are you going to?


NOT
To where are you going?

4. We can respond to a statement with a short question, by using a


preposition at the end to ask for more information:

TAKE NOTE:
“I went out for a meal last night.”
“Who did you go with?”

is the same as

“Who with?” OR “Where to?”


“Who with?”

NOT
AND

“With who?” OR “To where?”


“Where did you go to?”
is the same as

“Where to?”
