R&S FSHTV-Z60 Adjustment

2 Adjustment

The Preselector R&S FSHTV-Z60 cannot be adjusted manually. The frequency response data of the
bypass path is stored in the preselector EEPROM. The frequency response data of the bypass path can
only be recorded and stored in the EEPROM at a Rohde & Schwarz plant.
The frequency response data of the filter path is stored in the R&S FSH3-TV. The R&S FSHTV-Z60
preselector is equipped with an internal calibration generator to record the frequency response data of
the filter path. For calibration purposes, the R&S FSH3-TV comes with an internal calibration routine. No
additional measuring equipment is required. The calibration routine is started in the FSH3-TV menu
SETUP\HARDWARE SETUP\PRESELECTOR\CALIBRATE. The calibration routine includes testing the
calibration generator, the attenuator as well as the frequency response of the preselector. For further
information, see section Performance Test, Quick Verification.

R&S FSHTV-Z60 Design and Functional Description

3 Repair
This chapter describes the design of the R&S FSHTV-Z60, simple measures for repair and
troubleshooting, and, in particular, the replacement of modules.

Design and Functional Description

The following figure shows a block diagram of the R&S FSHTV-Z60.

Fig. 3-1 Block Diagram R&S FSHTV-Z60

2111.7405.82-01.00 3.1
Design and Functional Description R&S FSHTV-Z60

Functional description
The Preselector R&S FSHTV-Z60 improves the dynamic range and the sensitivity of the TV analyzer
R&S FSH3-TV for cable TV applications. In the frequency range up to 1.1 GHz, the received signal is
attenuated by an electronic attenuator, selected by one of four filters and amplified. Due to the
bandwidth reduction in the received signal, the total power at the input mixer is reduced which produces
a significant reduction in the intermodulation products which arise in the R&S FSH3-TV. This results in
an improved dynamic range.
By amplifying the input signal after filtering, the total noise figure is reduced. This results in improved
sensitivity.

Impedance conversion and ESD protection

The received signal is transformed from 75 4 to 50 4. The circuitry is protected from overvoltage.

Cal generator
To calibrate the frequency response in the filter path, the R&S FSHTV-Z60 preselector is equipped with
a 10 MHz comb generator. Control is effected via the TV Analyzer R&S FSH3-TV, see section Control.

Attenuator and preamplifier

The preselector’s filter path contains an RF attenuator which is set depending on the setting for the
reference level and the selected dynamic range.
There is no separate RF attenuator in the preselector’s bypass path. The RF attenuator in the R&S-
FSH3-TV is used for attenuation purposes.
To increase the sensitivity at low receive levels, a low-noise amplifier can be connected after the filter
path as well as after the bypass path.
The following table shows the RF attenuation when the preamplifier is switched off.

R&S FSHTV-Z60 Design and Functional Description

When the preamplifier is switched on, its usage is linked to the setting for the reference level and the
selected signal path so that R&S FSH3-TV is always assured the best possible dynamic range. The
preamplifiers in the preselector and in the R&S FSH3-TV are added on in stages. The following table
shows the settings for the RF attenuator and the preamplifiers depending on the reference level.

Tracking filter
In case of filter path is selected the received signal is attenuated by an electronic attenuator, selected by
one of four filters and amplified. The filter bandwidth depends on the frequency.
The following table provides a summary of the bandwidth reduction achieved with the Preselector
R&S FSHTV-Z60.

A 250 MHz to < 600 MHz Tracking filter 75 MHz 120 MHz
A 600 MHz to > 1100 MHz Tracking filter 170 MHz 300 MHz

For measurements over 1.1 GHz and fast sweeps with a wide frequency span, the filter branch is
bypassed completely.

2111.7405.82-01.00 3.3
Design and Functional Description R&S FSHTV-Z60

Control
2
Communication is achieved via I C bus from the R&S FSH3-TV controller.
For calibration purposes the level correction of the bypass path values are stored in an EEPROM. This
EEPROM also contains module-specific information.
By using the comb generator and the calibration routine, the frequency response data of the filter path is
determined and stored in the R&S FSH3-TV. The preselector serial number is assigned to the
calibration data. The R&S FSH3-TV can store the calibration data sets of different preselectors. When
the preselector is connected, the R&S FSH3-TV reads its serial number and checks whether a data set
pertaining to this specific preselector has already been stored. If not, it prompts the start of the
calibration routine. The R&S FSH3-TV controls the calibration; no additional measuring equipment is
required.
When the firmware is updated, the preselector data sets are lost. Calibration must be repeated. The
routine takes approx. four minutes.

Power
The R&S FSH3-TV supplies power to the preselector via the control interface. DC/DC converters
generate voltages of +4.5 V, +30 V and -5 V from the 5 V DC supply.

This chapter provides information on how to order spare parts, and it also contains the spare parts list.

Shipping of Instrument and Ordering of Spare Parts

Please contact your Rohde & Schwarz support center or our spare parts express service if you need to
request service, repair your equipment, or order spare parts and modules.
The list of Rohde & Schwarz representatives and the address of our spare parts express service are
provided in the front section of this service manual.
You will need to provide the following information in order for us to respond to your inquiries quickly and
accurately and to determine whether the warranty for your instrument is still valid:
• Instrument model
• Serial number
• Detailed error description in case of repair
• Contact partner for checkbacks

Shipping of instrument

When shipping the instrument, be sure to provide sufficient mechanical and anti-static protection:

Repack the instrument as it was originally packed. The antistatic packing foil prevents unintentional
electrostatic charging from occurring.

If you do not use the original packaging, include sufficient padding to prevent the instrument from
slipping inside the package. Wrap antistatic packing foil around the instrument to protect it from elec-
trostatic charging.

• Designation
• Number of units
• Instrument type for the replacement part
• Contact person for possible questions
The R&S order number to be used when ordering replacement parts and modules as well as power

Refurbished modules

Refurbished modules are an economical alternative to original modules. It should be kept in mind that
refurbished modules are not new, but repaired and fully tested parts. They may have signs of use but
they are electrically and mechanically equivalent to new modules.

To find out which refurbished modules are available, please contact your Rohde & Schwarz represen-
