What Is a
Community Leader?
There are many kinds of cornrnunities (kuh-MEW-
nuh-teez). A community can be the place where you
live. Or, it can be a group of people who like the same
things. A community is a group of people who work
together as a team .

• Senator Barack Obama speaks at a town hall meeting.

Communities have leaders. These leaders do many
kinds of jobs. But, they all have the same goal. They
help to make their communities better. These leaders
make plans. And, they help people who are in need.

.. A Sizable Difference
Communities can be very big. Or,
they can be very small. New York
City is a community. It has over
8 million (MIL-yuhn) people! A
small town called Victory in
the state of Vermont is also a
community. They have fewer than
100 people.

Parent Teacher Association .
Do you know what the PTA is? The letters PTA
stand for Parent Teacher Association (uh-so-see-
AY-shuhn). The PTA helps parents work with their
children's schools.
Every PTA has a president (PREZ-uh-duhnt).
This person is a volunteer (VOL-uhn-teer) from the
community. He or she helps run the PTA. The PTA
president meets with parents and teachers. They talk
about school. The school may have problems. The PTA
president works
hard
to help solve
these problems.

mothers and teachers to

became the PTA. Today, it
is not just for mothers. Any
parent or teacher can join.

from true. They are there
to help their students.
Some principals used to
work as teachers. They
still work to make sure
that students learn.
Youth Leaders

These things help people in need. Some groups help
sick people. Others just help children. They may
collect gifts. Then, they give these gifts to children on
holidays.

money. A leader can plan to have a bake sale. Then,
the money from the bake sale can go to a good cause.

who do not have enough to eat. Charity leaders give
their time to help others .

our community.

Women line up •
to vote long ago.

Let's Vote on It
Any citizen (SIT-uh-zuhn)
who is at least 18 years
old can vote in the United
States. But, it was not
always that way. Long
ago, only certain men had
the right to vote. Women
did not like this. They
wanted to vote, too. In
1920, women got the right
to vote.

A Great Place to Live
Community leaders help make a community a great
place to live. What would your school be like without
your principal's help? What would our country be
like without government leaders? Our communities
would fall apart. These leaders help to keep community
members happy and safe. They also make sure that we
all work together as a team.
Community leaders givc their time to help others.

are important?
Girls' are always taught how to do things
indoors. They know how to cook and clean.
But, there are important skills that can be leamed
outdoors. Girl Scouts leam how to take care of
themselves. They leam to be confident.

What is your day like?

We meet as a group. The girls leam something
new every week. This week, the
girls are leaming how to swim.

What do you like most about your job?

1 like being a community leader. 1 have started

Principals are pivotal leaders in educational communities, tasked with more than just disciplinary actions. They work to ensure educational quality and community engagement by solving problems, maintaining order, ensuring security, and facilitating communication among teachers, parents, and students. They focus on enhancing educational outcomes, student well-being, and parent-teacher cooperation, thereby creating a supportive learning environment that transcends traditional disciplinary roles .

The success of fundraising activities led by organizations such as the Girl Scouts relies on several key elements: well-organized planning to ensure activities meet community interests, skill-building activities that involve youth members, and clear communication to inform the community about the cause and impact of donations. For example, Girl Scouts effectively raise funds through cookie sales, with the participation of community members supporting future events .

Both historical and contemporary tools used by community leaders are aimed at facilitating communication, organization, and community improvement. Historically, tools like trains were used to distribute supplies, as seen during World War II, while today, airplanes provide faster delivery. Voting remains a crucial tool, historically empowering women with the Nineteenth Amendment and continuing to ensure democratic involvement. Modern technologies like the internet provide new platforms for community engagement and information dissemination .

Youth leaders in organizations such as the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts play a crucial role in the personal development of young members by organizing activities that teach teamwork, life skills, and self-reliance. These leaders plan meetings, camping trips, and skill-building exercises, which help youth members learn to be part of a team and contribute to the community, fostering traits like confidence and community awareness .

Beyond economic contributions, business leaders impact their communities by sharing their expertise through education, participating in community service, and creating job opportunities. They can speak to students, teach college classes, and offer practical advice on starting new companies. Additionally, some business leaders contribute through significant charitable donations, as demonstrated by Warren Buffet's donation of 30 billion dollars to charity .

Religious leaders play a significant role in community cohesion by helping individuals make sense of their lives and addressing community problems. Citizen involvement is crucial, as it provides feedback and accountability for these leaders through voting and participation in council meetings. This ensures that the decisions made truly reflect the community's needs and preferences, fostering a democratic and inclusive environment .

Charity leaders facilitate community development by organizing fundraising events, collecting donations, and redistributing resources to those in need. They play a critical role in addressing social issues such as poverty, hunger, and education by directing resources where they are most needed. However, they face challenges such as securing consistent donations, managing volunteers, and ensuring efficient use of resources, as seen in organizations like The Salvation Army .

Community cleanup leaders have a profound impact on both environmental and social aspects by organizing efforts to maintain cleanliness and health in public spaces. They coordinate activities like trash pickup and tree planting, which improve the physical environment and prevent pollution. Socially, such initiatives encourage community involvement, promote environmental awareness, and strengthen community bonds through collaborative efforts to repair and enhance their surroundings, especially following disasters like hurricanes .
