QUARTER I, WEEK 1A
Representing Real-Life Situations Using Functions

Name of the Learner : ________________________________________ Section : _______________

School : ________________________________________ Date : _______________

I. Learning Competency
1. The learner represents real-life situations using functions, including piece-wise functions.
(M11GM-Ia-1)

II. Key Concepts

 A relation is any set of ordered pairs. The set of all first elements of the ordered pairs is called the
domain of the relation, and the set of all second elements is called the range.
 A function is a relation or rule of correspondence between two elements (domain and range) such
that each element in the domain corresponds to exactly one element in the range.

Relations ca be determined a function or not a function using the following:

1. Mapping of two sets of numbers.

Given a mapping of two sets of elements, it is a

1 7 function if each element in the first set
2 5 corresponds to only one element in the second
3 4 set. Otherwise, a mapping is not a function.

It shows that the given example of mapping is a function.

2. Set of ordered pairs. Given a set of ordered pairs, observe each

element in the domain as it corresponds to the
𝐴𝐴 = {(1,2), (2,3), (3,4), (4,5)} element in the range. If there are two ordered
pairs with same value in the domain but different
It shows that the given example of a set value in the range, then a set of ordered pairs is
of ordered pairs is a function. not a function. Otherwise, it is a function.

3. Equations with two variables

Given an equation, if you find at least one
possible value of x that would result to at least two
𝑦𝑦 = √𝑥𝑥
values for y then it is not a function. Otherwise, it
is a function.
For this example, if the value of 𝑥𝑥 is a perfect square number then the value for y could be
±𝑎𝑎 (that is, +𝑎𝑎 𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎𝑎 − 𝑎𝑎) where 𝑎𝑎 is the square root of a perfect square number.

It shows that the given example of equation is not function.

4. Graph of an equation with two variables

Given a graph, if any vertical line drawn passing

through the graph intersects it at exactly one point
Vertical line
then it is a function. Otherwise, the graph is not a
test
function.

It shows that the given example of a

graph is not a function.

GENERAL MATHEMATICS QUARTER 1, WEEK 1A 4

 A Piecewise Function is a function that is defined by two or more expressions, where each
expression is associated with a unique interval of the function’s domain.

In a function, 𝑦𝑦 𝑜𝑜𝑜𝑜 𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥) is dependent on the value of 𝑥𝑥. Real-life situations can be represented by
functions.

A. Give a function 𝑓𝑓 that can represent the cost of buying 𝑥𝑥 meals if one meal costs P40.

Solution: Since each meal costs P40, then the cost of buying if 𝒇𝒇(𝒙𝒙) − 𝟒𝟒𝟒𝟒𝟒𝟒.

B. Give a function 𝑊𝑊 of a river’s water level in 𝑡𝑡 hours if it starts at 12 meters and increases 0.5
meter every hour?

Solution: 𝑊𝑊 is a function of 𝑡𝑡. So, the function can be expressed as 𝑾𝑾(𝒕𝒕) = 𝟎𝟎. 𝟓𝟓𝟓𝟓 + 𝟏𝟏𝟏𝟏.

III. Guided Practice

Constructing a Piecewise Function

Problem: A tricycle ride costs ₱10.00 for the first 2

kilometres, and each additional kilometre adds ₱8.00

to the fare. Use a piecewise function to represent the
tricycle fare in terms of the distance d in kilometres.

variable (the outcome/result) and Dependent Variable: Tricycle fare
the independent variable (the Independent Variable: The distance in kilometers

IV. Independent Practice

Directions:
Follow the steps in the first column to solve the problem in the second column.

Problem:
A van rental charges P5,500.00 flat rate for a whole-day hour in CALABARZON of 5 passengers and
each additional passenger added P500.00 to the tour fare. Express a piecewise function to represent the
van rental in terms of the number of passenger 𝑛𝑛.

1. Determine what is being asked in

the problem.
2. Write the function notation and the
variable to be used in a piecewise
function.
3. Determine the dependent variable
(the outcome/result) and the
independent variable (the
condition/s)
4. Write down those possible
statements as mentioned in the
given problem.
5. Convert each statements
in this form:
(Expression of the result) if
(expression of the condition)
6. Determine the interval for each of
the conditions.
7. Construct the piecewise function
of the problem.

V. Assessment
Directions: Answer each item correctly. Write your answer on a separate sheet of paper.

1. Which of the following statements represents a function?

(a) Students to their current age.
(b) Countries to its capital
(c) A store to its merchandise
2. Which of the following letters will pass the vertical line test? V W X Y Z
3. A person earning P600 per day to do a certain job. Express the total salary S as a function of the
number n of days that the person works.
4. A computer shop charges 20 pesos per hour (or a fraction of an hour) for the first two hours and an
additional 10 pesos per hour for each succeeding hour. Represent your computer rental fee using
the function R(t) where t is the number of hours you spent on the computer.
