I. Title/ Subject Matter
Contemporary Fine Arts in the Philippines (Contemporary Painting)
II. Learning Objectives / Learning Competencies
Define contemporary arts in the Philippines
Research on various contemporary art forms; and
Apply artistic skills and techniques in the process of creation
III. Discussion/ Lesson Proper
Brincatian, make a short prayer before you start.
The fine arts consist of architecture, sculpture, and painting. Some fine arts are made in two dimensions
where the material or medium is applied to a flat surface to create an image. This is usually hung on the wall, as in
the case of painting. There are also three-dimensional fine arts, such as architecture in ice, metal, or glass where
molding, carving, and combining materials are done to make an artwork.
This chapter has lengthy discussion on the three fine arts: painting, sculpture, and architecture.
Each lesson is divided into two parts: Art Production and Art Appreciation
Fine arts require of the artist the mastery of use of material/medium, technique, and craftsmanship.
o Material - designates the physical elements of art, such as paint, stone, clay, or metal.
o Medium – is a characteristic way of using materials for an artistic purpose.
In the case of architecture and sculpture, these are considered art genres, not a medium.
o Technique – is a personal way of using a medium or a material.
o Craftsmanship – is the skill of doing what can be done in a medium and the ability to do it (Feldman,
1981:269)
Every art-making process is dictated by the artist’s style. Style has many meanings. It can mean the
art produced in a particular historical period. It can also refer to the art of a nation or a region within a
country.
Contemporary Painting
The significant of style lies in the fact that is allows the
viewer to discern the meaning behind the subject matter and
purpose of the painting. Study Elmer Borlongan’s Driver’s
Lounge.
There are several men sitting inside a room and they are
visible through the glass walls. Note that they are all bald. This is
unusual sight because not all drivers are bald and they all happen
to be in the same room at the same time. Yet, this is characteristics
of Elmer Borlongan’s paintings where his figures are bald, male or
female. In most of his paintings, the emphasis is on the human
figures ‘eyes which are very expressive. He has a tendency to
flatten the head of his figures to draw the attention of the viewer to
Elmer Borlongan,
the figure’s eyes. "Drivers Lounge"
Contemporary painting is made in many styles at one time
throughout the globe.

“Peace and Good through Quality Education”
We describe the stylistics tendencies that are manifested in an artwork. Stylistics changes are apparent in
stylistics tendencies, which are attributed to the creative inventions of artists working at certain times and in specific
places.
There are four styles that are based on stylistic tendencies: (a.) objective accuracy, (b.) formal order, (c.)
emotion, and (d.) fantasy. Edmund Burke Feldman’s (1981) Varieties of Visual Experience guides us in discussing
these styles.
A. The Style of Objective Accuracy
Many contemporary artists face the problem of creating an impression of reality through a selective use of
visual facts. Artists imitate appearance to convey moving drama about human life. Sometimes, artists combine
their representational skills to create a psychological impact. In their desire to do so, the representation
becomes an interpretation of reality which does not necessarily have objective accuracy.
In objective accuracy, the artist can do art by being a detached observer or by employing a selective eye.
Classification Description Example
The Artist as a Detached Observer The artwork seems to have been Cebu artist Jose Marie Picornell

subject very carefully.
How does one achieve objective accuracy?
IV. It is through correct drawing, control, focus, color, and perspective.
V.
Correct Drawing
Correct drawing is the most common device.
It takes mastery acquired through formal studies and serious practice to make beautiful artworks.
Learning how to draw accurately teaches the artist to see and to understand what he or she is looking at.

He or she must learn to distinguish between imitation of surfaces and informed representation.
Example
o As seen in the complexion, the tensed muscles that expose the shape of the bone
structure and slightly bent shoulders of the main figure, the viewer can tell that
he is an elderly person.
o The clothing appears soft yet loose and oversized for the person.
o The shadow does not go to the same direction of the person but the opposite.
o The titles give us a hint about the meaning that the painting conveys.

Control
The artist’s control and handling of illumination help in creating realistic images.
The amount of light an object receives, the shape of its shadows, the transition from light to shadow, the
source of light – these are things that the artist learns to observe and control in the medium that he or she
uses.
Example
o Mastery of technique and control and handling of light are manifested in the
complex folds of the draperies that make the human figures appear bigger.
o Light is distributed throughout the pictorial frame without concealing the
features of the main figure, a lady who seems to be sitting in dreamland.
o The male figure behind her appears to be silent but possesses an imposing
presence that seems to say that he has power over the lady.

Focus
Focus is achieved through sharpness or softness, distinctness or vagueness of form and contour.
“The rather elementary fact about optics that objects lose distinctness at the periphery of our field of vision
becomes a device for controlling the spectator’s visual experience. The eye is drawn to the most distinctly
represented form, other things being equal” (Feldman 1981, 160).
Example
o The most prominent are the human figures painted in brown,
which renders the background dull. This was intentionally
done by the artist to lead the viewer’s focus on the natives of
the mountain province whose faces are distorted as if to play
the role of jesters while carrying Colonel Sanders of Kentucky
Fried Chicken.

Color
Color is a powerful instrument. It is mainly connected with the description of the objects.
The color of the objects varies depending on the amount and source of light they receive and on their location
in space.
Example
o Colors are also used to form brown and white lights that
cover the entire frame.
o The human being on the right side is in its natural color,
brown.
o Dennis Montera, in his Obra et Labora, used blue as the
background color that goes lighter from left to the right side
of the horizontal canvas.
o The black doodle-like lines seem to be letters that spell out a
word hastily written on shades of white paint.
o The black lines are heavy and thick but go lighter as they
approach the right side of the frame.

Perspective
Perspective is the pictorial device that relates to the artist’s ability to create the illusion of deep space within
the painting.
The technical features of linear and aerial perspective – the perspective of shadows the reflections, of
receding measured forms, of advancing and foreshortened forms, of single- and two-point systems, of the
interaction of perspective with color and illumination – are exceedingly complex (Feldman 1981, 158-165).
Example
o The human body appears in the background which is defined with a black outline.
o Life is indicated by the tongues of fire rendered in red with some shades of white.
o The most prominent in the painting are the cranes flying toward the heart, as if it
were their home.
o Palmy Pe-Tudtud showed perspective by making the cranes near the viewer
bigger and as they go father, they appear to be smaller. This creates depth and an
illusion of space. In effect, they seem to be flying around a wider space although
in reality, the only space available is the height and width of the canvas.

B. The Style of Formal Order
Formal order in contemporary art is associated with stability and permanence. Formal order is exhibited by
its qualities: intellectual order, biomorphic order, and aesthetic order.
As intellectual order is clearly applied to painting, the discussion and example are provided here. This style is
visible in cubism where an intellectual method of analyzing forms is employed by the painter. The artist presents an
arrangement of geometric forms. We have seen this style in the works of western painters Pablo Picasso and Georges
Braque.

C. The Style of Emotion
Themes of emotion, feeling, and romance are common features in painting. Romanticism and emotion are
used in painting when the artist wishes to disclose personal feelings in relation to love. Anxiety and despair in
painting express disappointment, bitterness, disturbance, or uncomfortable feelings and often look dark and chaotic.
Joy and celebration are displayed through vigorous, uncomplicated approach such as depiction of movement and
energy with the visual representation of the sun, sky, air, water, and mountains. Brushstrokes are also used to express
sparkle, freshness, and abundance (Feldman 1981, 186-201)
D. The Style of Fantasy
The artist creates strange forms or allows himself or herself to experience a creative process that leads to
fantastic outputs. Fantastic works may be objectively accurate or subjectively distorted. We can speak of fantastic
style, then, only because certain works exhibit a logic based on dreams, utopian hopes, and speculative vision and can
be based on myth, fairy tales, folk stories, magic, hybrid man-animal creatures, etc. “Fantastic art thus manipulates
illusion and reality” (Feldman 1981, 202-217).
