Chapter 1
About the Invensys License
Manager
The Invensys License Manager provides central management of all
licenses and the ability to assess license usage and license
requirements based on installed applications.
With the Invensys License Manager, you can:
• Import any purchased licenses into the License Manager.
• Associate licenses with individual nodes on the system to ensure
correct software usage.
• Install and manage licenses on local and remote nodes.
• View license usage across your system.
• Export license information to Excel and .csv formats.
The license server functionality incorporated into the Invensys License
Manager is a system service configured for automatic startup and runs
in a TCP/IP network. When a license server is configured, the license
server starts up and loads the served license files.
Client computers running licensed applications can access the served
licenses on the license server using the license server search paths
defined in Invensys License Manager. By using a centralized license
server, you maintain your Invensys licenses in single location, rather
than installing multiple local licenses across your network.
Invensys License Manager Guide
10 Chapter 1 About the Invensys License Manager
About Licenses
Licenses for Invensys products are maintained in license files or on a
license server. The license file contains one or more license
components, which are lines of information that specify licensing for
an individual product.
Each license component is assigned a unique part number and
contains information such as:
• Product name
• Serial number
• Type and duration of license
• Number of seats, specific user assignments, and other information
Invensys License Manager supports Wonderware and SimSci licenses.
• Wonderware licenses support FLEXnet Publisher v.11.10 from
Flexera Software. This version is included with Wonderware
System Platform 2012 R2 and later.
• SimSci licenses support FLEXnet Publisher v.11.8, v.9.5, and
v.11.11 from Flexera Software.
There are two kinds of licenses, unserved and served.
• Unserved licenses, also known as local licenses, are installed on
the same computer as the applications using them. Unserved
licenses do not run on a license server. Unserved license files
usually have a file name such as [Link].
• Served licenses are only installed on computers with an installed
ArchestrA license server. License servers can reside on local or
remote computers. Served license files typically have a file
extension of .lic, which results in a file name such as
[Link].
There are three types of served licenses:
• Named device licenses, also known as host-based licenses, which
are associated with specific computers.
• Named user licenses, also known as user-based licenses, which are
associated with specific users.
• Concurrent licenses, which can be used with any devices or users.
Information about the license type appears in the license name and
license components when you view it in the Invensys License
Manager.
SimSci licenses do not use named device or named user license types.
Invensys License Manager Guide
Invensys License Manager Usage Modes11
Products may have a demonstration period, which allows you to run
the specified application for a defined period when the license is not
available. Licenses may also define a grace period, which is entered
when a license is unavailable. The grace period is a limited time period
tracked by the application. The application determines what happens
during the grace period.
The Invensys License Manager allows you to select a usage mode,
offers three views through which you can view and manage your
licenses, provides a flexible hierarchy that reflects your system and
installed licenses, and provides grids that show detailed information
about selected computers and licenses.
Invensys License Manager Usage Modes
Invensys License Manager can be used in one of two usage modes:
• Wizard mode
Use Invensys License Manager wizard to perform basic license
tasks, such as importing, installing, upgrading, and uninstalling

Customizing the System Hierarchy
Use the Network Editor, available only in System View, to customize
your system hierarchy. The system hierarchy you define becomes a
working framework in all three views.
The Network Editor enables you to create a site, create a system,
create a machine, and to edit or remove sites, systems, and machines.
You cannot create or remove a site, create or remove a system, or add
or remove machines if you configured License Manager as a single
node. You can edit the site and system names and their associated
descriptions.
To begin using the Invensys License Manager to manage your licenses,
you must create at least one site, one system, and one machine. A
default site, "Site01", is configured when you select the operating
mode.
You can edit the site name and create new sites to better reflect your
system.
You can add multiple machines and machine types, including local
machines, license server machines, and remote machines.
Important: To access a remote machine, you must have
administrator permissions on that machine.
