Exploring Slavery in Filipino Culture

The document discusses the movie Emperor and how it depicts the cruel life of slavery that was rampant in many countries including the Philippines in the past. It notes how Filipino culture places a strong duty on family and how slaves in the movie, unlike some real places, had no chance of leaving their master's property, making escape very difficult. The document concludes that as a future priest, it is important to help people overcome problems that make them consider suicide, through open communication and spending time with others.

“Should I kill myself or have a cup of coffee?”
The movie Emperor talks about how cruel is the life of being a slave. Slaver is very
rampant in the past few years. It cannot deny that it became spread throughout different
countries. The Philippines was one of the countries that are being slaved by the Spaniards. Most
of the situations in the movie are the same tragedy in the Philippines. Overall, we should not
misuse our science and technology. The film is pointing out that we should consider our nature
to be our future generation.
Filipino culture generally includes a powerful sense of duty to family. It seems connected
to the movie that they sacrifice their dignity to live and maintain their relationship with their
family. Also, the relationship of the master and the slave was highly contingent, depending on
how much debt the slave owed to the master and the purposes to which the master sought to use
his or her slaves. Unlike in the Philippines, there is a chance of leaving a life of a slave. In the
movie, it’s clear that the slaves are going only on the property of their master (aliping
saguiguilid). So we can say that it’s hard to escape and run away efficiently since they don’t
have any house to live in.
As a seminarian, it’s a challenge for me to help people who have been slaves by their
problems since suicide nowadays is rampant. People are now easily deceived into being
pessimistic. As a future priest, using communication and giving time to other people is an
excellent start to indulge and have a coffee cup.
