Fault Code 143 (SW)

The document discusses troubleshooting an oil pressure switch fault code 143 in a Cummins engine. It provides steps to check the oil pressure sensor voltage, verify the engine speed at which the fault occurs, connect a manual gauge to monitor oil pressure, and that the fault triggers if oil pressure drops below 6 psi for 5 seconds. It outlines checking the sensor accuracy with a mechanical gauge, verifying the fault code is inactive after running the engine, and clearing any remaining fault codes to complete the repair.

OIL PRESSURE - ENGINE PROTECTION WITH AN

CUMMINS OIL PRESSURE SWITCH

FAULT CODE: 143

PID: P100
SPN: 100
FMI: 1

Oil Pressure Sensor Circuit

DESCRIPTION
The oil pressure switch is used by the electronic control module
(ECM) to detect the presence of lubricating oil pressure.
- Confirm that the oil pressure sensor supply voltage is between (+)
4.5 and 5.25 VDC at the sensor.
- Verify, with the driver, the engine speed at which the fault occurs.
If the engine is being operated at too low of a speed under load, the
oil pressure can drop below the engine protection limits.
- Connect a manual gauge to monitor the actual oil pressure of the
engine.
- The fault will trigger if lubricating oil pressure drops below 41 kPa
[6 psi] for 5 seconds while the engine is running.
- Engines in the field can have had a jumper harness kit installed
which connect the oil pressure switch to pin K in the 23-pin OEM
connector or cavity 8 in the Ford OEM connector.
COMPONENT LOCATION
The oil pressure switch is located on the engine block, below and
to the right of the ECM.

TROUBLESHOOTING STEPS
Step 1A) Turn key switch ON and verify the sensor accuracy with a mechanical gauge. Connect a
mechanical oil pressure gauge to the engine. Connect diagnostic tool to vehicle data link. The switch will
display 379.9 kPa {55.1 psi} in the diagnostic tool if it detects actual oil pressure above 41 kPa {6 psi}.

The switch is detecting pressure?

Yes - Go to 2A No - If Fault Code 141 is active, then go to Fault

Code 141.

Step 2A) Connect all the components and turn key switch ON. Disable the fault code. Start the engine, and
let it idle for 1 minute. Verify Fault Code 143 is inactive.
NOTE: If the fault was at a particular speed, run the engine at that speed to verify the problem has been
corrected.

Fault Code 143 inactive?

Yes - Go to 2B No - Return to the troubleshooting steps or contact

local Cummins Authorized Repair Location if all the
steps have been completed and checked again
Go to 1A

Step 2B) Connect all the components and turn key switch ON. Clear the inactive fault codes using the
diagnostic tool.

All faults cleared?

Yes - Repair is complete No - Troubleshoot any remaining active fault codes

with appropriate troubleshooting steps.
