CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION
1.1 The Background
Many English teaching uses Information Communication Technology (ICT). ICT in

virtual classroom allows teaching to take place at any time, not requiring similar

facilities in conventional classrooms. One of the innovations for developing teaching

techniques using computer technology is the Learning Management System (LMS)

media or called the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) and better known as online

classes. This learning media really attracts the attention of teachers because the facilities

provided by the online class meet the needs of teachers in delivering materials,

assignments, and quizzes. In addition, they can also develop teaching materials,

conduct assessments and feedback quickly thanks to the internet connection used in this

online class. Online classes that are widely used by teachers around the world,

including teachers of English as a foreign language in Indonesia, are Edmodo.

2.2 Summary
a. Conceptual Review
 Definition of Edmodo

Edmodo is one of the results of a development in information technology that helps

and welcomes 21st century education, which is a company that provides social media

services to support online learning systems for education activists, such as teachers,

students, students, lecturers. In this Edmodo platform both teachers and students can

interact with each other easily. Of course this will facilitate learning activities such as

giving assignments, taking exams, quizzes, and much more.

 Edmodo features

 Parent Code

Edmodo not only makes it easier for students in the learning process and also for

teachers in managing the learning system. However, parents can also take a role

through this Edmodo platform and in order to take part in this platform, parents must

register their account on the Edmodo application or website.

 Award Badge

As a form of appreciation and appreciation for students at Edmodo, the teacher can

give an Award Badge. Students who are able to complete quizzes, exams, and

assignments well and get good grades are entitled to receive a badge award from their

teacher.

 Poll

Judging from the name alone, it can be guessed that the poll feature is related to

taking a vote. This feature helps teachers use Edmodo to find out their students'

responses. For example, when students have completed an assignment or a quiz.

3
 Assignment

This feature has the greatest role in helping the assignment of a teacher to his

students. With this Assignment feature, teachers are given services by Edmodo to be

more effective and efficient in assigning assignments to their students.

 Library

As in general, a library that stores various important documents for learning be it

books, last year's exam questions, journal references, etc., Edmodo also has this feature

in the Edmodo platform. The difference is the Library feature in Edmodo and the real

world has more efficiency and management in its management.

 Files and Links

If in the past a teacher in giving lessons in class usually only used blackboard media,

in Edmodo this media can be developed more effectively using a File and Link feature.

This feature helps teachers provide notes in the form of document files, text, audio,

video, and others.

 Quiz

In Edmodo, there is a Quiz feature that can help teachers provide online exams, be it

quizzes, exams, tests, and other things. This quiz will also be saved in the Library

feature so that in the future, if needed, this quiz can be used again.

 Edmodo Platform Functions

In general, the function of Edmodo platform is to help education activists, be it

teachers, students, lecturers, and even students. In managing the learning system using

edmodo this can be done easily. The functions of this platform are quite a lot ranging

from being a social media for students and teachers, a place for learning, a place to do a

4
material evaluation, and much more. The most interesting function of the Edmodo

platform is that it helps teachers to share experiences through the Edmodo Community.

 The advantages of the Edmodo Platform

 Edmodo Community,

 Freedom of Students,

 School Activities Become Efficient,

them can be managed by users easily. This platform also helps students to be more

disciplined when a project and assignment is given by their teacher and also helps users

to mutually collaborate and share through one of its features.

b. Materials and Methods

This research uses a quasi-experimental method with a test instrument that is tested

first in the tryout session to obtain a valid and reliable test instrument. The quantitative

data in the study is the value of the English proficiency text test results. The research

sample was selected by cluster random sampling technique to obtain experimental

groups. and a control group of six classes of fifth semester students at the Faculty to

read language information from April to November 2015. Economics of the University

of Serang Raya.

c. Results and Discussions

X1 data obtained from the results of the comprehension ability test English text written

by students who received attention on online media Edmodo. A total of 30 students

5
become the sample in this experimental class. although the average value of

understanding the English text on students in Edmodo online class (ie 32.32) more

higher than those in the conventional class (i.e. 28.68), the difference between the two

was declared insignificant because of Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) = 0.418> 0.05. Then the test

results the null hypothesis H1 = µ1.0 µ µ2.0 but accepts Ho = µ1.0 ≤ µ2.0. That is, there

is no significant difference above ability to understand English text in students who

were taught using online classes on Edmodo with them who are taught using

conventional media.

CHAPTER III Journal Assessment
3.1 Strengthen of the Journal
1. In terms of completeness of the identity of the journal, this journal has a

complete identity such as ISSN number which indicates that the journal is

official, there is a complete address by the author of the journal, and so forth.

2. In the abstract can already include the entire contents of the journal.

3. In terms of grammar, the language used in this journal uses the standard

language and the delivery of the material is not long-winded so that it is quite

easy for the reader to understand.

4. In terms of writing, the location of spaces and font size are regular.

5. In terms of the scope of the material, this journal contains articles that

describe broadly the effect of ICT use on improving the ability to understand

English text in E-learning.

6. In journals there are also tables and diagrams so that it can make it easier for

readers to better understand and remember the material in the journal.

7. At the end of writing the journal material, the author of the journal lists

conclusions and suggestions.

8. The attached list contains a considerable number of references related to the

topics covered in the article, making it easier for readers to get more

information about the material in the journal.

3.2 Weakness of the Journal

1. There are foreign terms that are not understood by some readers and in
journals are also not included meaning so that the lay reader is rather difficult
in understanding the material in the journal.

7
CHAPTER IV CLOSING
4.1 Conclusion
The effect of using ICT in the form of online classes in Edmodo is not significant

compared to the use of conventional media. Thus, the use of ICT in the form of online

classes cannot be favored to replace conventional media in giving influence to

improving the ability to understand English text in students.

4.2 Recommendation
• Choose online learning media that are user friendly to reduce technical constraints

when used.

• Lecturers / teachers who use online media must always motivate their students to

become independent learners and want to collaborate during the learning process in

online classes.

• Because this online media is used for teaching EFL (English as Foreign Language)

especially in text reading skills, it should not be avoided to switch language between

English and Indonesian during teaching and discussion. This is expected to reduce

communication barriers so that teaching objectives are achieved properly.

• Further research should be done by adding variables related to the role of students

and lecturers as users of this online learning media.
