HOMEWORK

1. Compute the magnitude of the resultant force on the circular window as

shown in Figure 1 below and the location of the centre of pressure. Determine
also the height of the orange drink that will act the same resultant force as the
outside pressure (atm pressure)/

3. Water acts on a 1.5 m wide and 2.4 m length of rectangular gate
weighing 3500 N as shown on Figure 2. The gate is held in place by a
horizontal flexible cable and hinged at point A. Determine the
hydrostatic force acting on the gate and its line of action. Determine
also the tension in the cable

2. A rectangular gate as shown in Figure below of negligible
thickness, hinged at its top edge and of width b, separates two
tank in which there is the same liquid of density. It is required
that the gate shall open when the level in the left-hand tank fall
below a distance H from the hinge. The level in the right-hand
tank remains constant at a height y above the hinge. Derive an
expression for the weight of the gate in term of H, Y, y, b and g.
assume that the weight of the gate acts at its centre of area.
3. For the curved surface ABC shown in Figure 3 below,
determine the magnitude of vertical and horizontal hydrostatic
forces as well as the resultant force and its direction. The width
of the curved surface is 1.2 m.
For the curve surface ABC shown in Figure 2, Determine the
resultant hydrostatic force and its direction.
