Team Negotiation Assignment
For this assigment you will be designated to one of two teams of three to five
students for a team-based negotiation. Your negotiation will either take place in-class
or virtually using a multi-party video conferencing tool provided by your instructor
such as Zoom or Big Blue Button. Your confidential role information, and details
about your goals and priorities will be released in Moodle a week before your
negotiation to allow you to prepare. This will be a more complex negotiation involving
at least two separate negotiation sessions. You will find the name and email address
of your negotiation partners and your opponents posted in the Course Negotiation
Schedule. Groups will also be set-up in Moodle to help facilitate communication with
your team.
There are three components to this exercise 1) a pre-negotiation plan, 2) a series of
contract negotiations and 3) a post-negotiation assessment.
Pre-negotiation Plan:
Before the negotiation begins, you will be required to complete a brief pre-
negotiation plan. This will include an overview of the issues, your goals, an
assessment of your opponent, strategies and the rationale for your approach. A
template will be provided to assist you with this task. Your plan must be submitted to
the course submission folder before your negotiation as per the course outline. Only
one submission is required on behalf of your team.
Contract Negotiation:
You will negotiate your agreement with your opponent either in-class or virtually
using a multi-party video conferencing tool provided by your instructor. Your
agreement will be evaluated based on your settlement relative to your pre-
negotiation goals and your performance relative to the rest of the class. Contracts
must be signed by all parties and include student numbers. This can either be done
in person or electronically with programs such as DocuSign which offers a limited-
time free trial.
Post Negotiation Assessment:
After your negotiation your team will reflect on your experience and submit a written
report assessing what happened. Your report should discuss how your experience
relates to the course material and address the following questions:
1. What were the terms of your final settlement?
2. Were your proposed strategy & tactics successful? Why or why not?
3. Did your strategy or tactics change during the negotiation process? Why and
how?
4. Why did you achieve the settlement that you did? What was it you were
thinking about, feeling, concerned about etc.? What were you experiencing as
the negotiation unfolded? Was there a theme or thread? What were the key
turning points in what you were doing that led to this result?
5. What would you do differently or more of next time?
Your post negotiation assessment should be 1,500 words +/- 10% and must be
submitted in PDF format using 1.5 spacing. Your pre-negotiation plan must be
included in the appendix of your report along with a signed copy of your
agreement. Make sure to cite relevant theory from the weekly readings and class
discussions and use APA format. You can find out more about citing your work and
how to use the APA format at [Link] A PDF version of your
written report must be submitted to the course drop box as per the deadlines posted
in Moodle.
