The Lion and the Mouse: A Moral Tale
The Lion and the Mouse: A Moral Tale
One day, a Lion lay asleep in the jungle. A tiny Mouse, running about in the grass and not
noticing where he was going, ran over Lion’s head and down his nose.
The Lion awoke with a loud roar and down came his paw over the little Meuse. The great beast I
was about to open his huge jaws to swallow the tiny creature when “Pardon me, oh King, I beg
of you,” cried the frightened Mouse. “If you will only forgive me this time, I shall never forget
your kindness. 1 meant no harm and I certainly didn’t want to disturb Your Majesty. If you will
spare my life, perhaps I may be able to do you a good turn too. ”The Lion began to laugh, and
he laughed and laughed. “How could a tiny creature like you ever do anything to help me? And
he shook with laughter. “Oh well” he shrugged, looking down at the frightened Mouse, “you’re
not so much of a meal anyway.” He took his paw off the poor little prisoner and the Mouse
quickly scampered away. Sometime after this, some hunters, trying to capture the Lion alive so
they could carry him to their king set up rope nets in the jungle. The Lion, who was hunting for
some food, fell into the trap. Her roared and thrashed about trying to free himself but with
every move he made, the ropes bound him tighter
The unhappy Lion feared he could never escape, and he roared pitifully. His thunderous bellows
echoed through the jungle. The tiny Mouse, scurrying about far away, heard Lion’s roars “That
may be there very Lion who once freed me,” he said, remembering his promise. And he ran to
whether he could help.
Discovering the sad state the Lion was in, the Mouse said to him, “Stop, stop! You must not
roar. If you make so much noise, the hunters will come and capture you. I’ll get you out of this
trap.” With his sharp little teeth, the Mouse gnawed at the ropes until they broke. When the
Lion had stepped out of the net and was free once “Thank you, good Mouse,” said the Lion
gently. “You did help me even though I am big and you are so little. I see now that kindness is
always worthwhile.”

Once upon a time, there was a donkey in Guizhou. Someone officious shipped one there, but
finding no use for it, he set it loose at the foot of the mountain.
A tiger ran out from the mountains. When he saw this big tall thing, he thought it must be
divine. He quickly hid himself in the forest and surveyed it from under cover, sometimes the tiger
ventured a little nearer but still kept a respectful distance.
One day the tiger came out again. Just then the donkey gave a loud bray, I thinking the donkey
was going to eat him, the tiger hurriedly ran away. After a while, he sneaked back and watched
the donkey carefully. He found that though it had a huge body it seemed to have no special
ability.
After a few days, the tiger gradually became accustomed to its braying and was no longer so
afraid. Sometimes, he even came near and circled around the donkey.
Later the tiger became bolder. Once, he walked in front of the donkey and purposely bumped it.
This made the donkey so angry that it struck out his hind legs and kicked wildly.
Seeing this the tiger was very gleeful, Such a big thing as you can do so little!’ With a roar, he
pounced on the donkey and ate it up.
One day, a cat and a fox were having a conversation. The fox, who was a
conceited creature, boasted how clever she was. “Why, I know at least a
hundred tricks to get away from our mutual enemies, the dogs,” she said.
“I know only one trick to get away from dogs,” said the cat. “You should teach
me some of yours!
“Well, maybe someday, when I have the time, I may teach you a few of the
simpler ones”, replied the fox airily.
Just then they heard the barking of a pack of dogs in the distance. The barking
grew louder and louder – the dogs were coming in their direction! At once the
cat ran to the nearest tree and climbed into its branches, well out of reach of
any dog. “This is the trick I told you about, the only one I know”, said the cat.
“Which one of your hundred tricks are you going to use?
The fox sat silently under the tree, wondering which trick she should use.
Before she could make up her mind, the dogs arrived. They fell upon the fox
and tore her to pieces.

The Ant and the Dove
One hot day, an ant was seeking for some water. After walking around for a
moment, she came to a spring. To reach the spring, she had to climb up a
blade of grass. While making her way up, she slipped and fell unintentionally
into the water.
She could have sunk if a dove up a nearby tree had not seen her. Seeing that
the ant was in trouble, the dove quickly put off a leaf from a tree and dropped
it immediately into the water near the struggling ant. Then the ant moved
towards the leaf and climbed up there. Soon it carried her safely to dry
ground.
Not long after at that, there was a hunter nearby who was throwing out his net
towards the dove, hoping to trap it in this way.
Guessing what he should do, the ant quickly bit him on the heel. Feeling the
pain, the hunter dropped his net and the dove flew away quickly from this net.

It was the biggest catch which he ever had in his life. Surprisingly, this fish
turned into a beautiful princess. He felt in love with her and proposed her to
be his wife. She said; “Yes, but you have to promise not to tell anyone about
the secret that I was once a fish, otherwise there will be a huge disaster”. The

Short story:
1.
Once upon a time there was a rose who was very proud of her beautiful looks. Her only
disappointment was that she grew next to an ugly cactus. Every day, the rose would insult the
cactus on his looks while the cactus stayed quiet. All the other plants in the garden tried to
make the rose see sense, but she was too swayed by her own beauty.
One summer, the well present in the garden grew dry, and there was no water for the plants.
The rose began to wilt. She saw a sparrow dip her beak into the cactus for some water. Though
ashamed, she asked the cactus if she too could have some water. The kind cactus readily
agreed and they both got through the tough summer as friends.

Raj was upset because he had done poorly in his English test. His grandmother sat beside him,
and gave him a pencil. A puzzled Raj looked at his grandma and said he didn’t deserve a pencil
after his performance in the test.
His grandma explained, ‘You can learn a great many things from this pencil because it is just like
you. It experiences a painful sharpening, just the way you have experienced the pain of not
doing well on your test. However, it will help you be a better student.
Just as all the good that comes from the pencil is from within itself, you will also find the
strength to overcome this hurdle. And finally, just as this pencil will make its mark on any
surface, you too shall leave your mark on anything you choose to’. Raj was immediately
consoled and promised himself that he would do better.

3. THE TWO BROTHERS
By Leo Tolstoy
Two brothers set out on a journey together. At noon they lay down in a forest to rest. When
they woke up they saw a stone lying next to them. There was something written on the stone, and they
tried to make out what it was.
"Whoever find this stone," they read, "let him go straight into the forest at sunrise. In the forest
a river will appear; let him swim across the river to the other side. There he will find a she-bear and her
cubs. Let him take the cubs from her and run up the mountain with them, without once looking back. On
the top of the mountain he will see a house, and in that house he will find happiness.
"When they had read what was written on the stone, the younger brother said: "Let us go
together. We can swim across the river, carry off the bear cubs, take them to the house on the
mountain, and together find happiness.
"I am not going into the forest after bear cubs," said the elder brother, "and I advise you not to
go. In the first place, no one can know whether what is written on this stone is the truth --perhaps it was
written in jest. It is even possible that we have not read it correctly. In the second place, even if what is
written here is the truth -- suppose we go into the forest and night comes, and we cannot find the river.
We shall be lost. And if we do find the river, how are we going to swim across it? It may be broad and
swift. In the third place, even if we swim across the river, do you think it is an easy thing to take her cubs
away from the she-bear? She will seize us, and, instead of finding happiness, we shall perish, and all for
nothing. In the fourth place, even if we succeeded in carrying off the bear cubs, we could not run up a
mountain without stopping to rest. And, most important of all, the stone does not tell us what kind of
happiness we should find in that house. It may be that the happiness awaiting us there is not at all the
sort of happiness we would want."
"In my opinion," said the younger brother, "you are wrong. What is written on the stone could
not have been put there without reason. And it is all perfectly clear. In the first place, no harm will come
to us if we try. In the second place, if we do not go, someone else will read the inscription on the stone
and find happiness, and we shall have lost it all. In the third place, if you do not make an effort and try
hard, nothing in the world will succeed. In the fourth place, I should not want it thought that I was afraid
of anything."
The elder brother answered him by saying, "The proverb says: “In seeking great happiness small
pleasures may be lost.’ And also: ‘A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.’" The younger brother
replied, "I have heard: ‘He who is afraid of the leaves must not go into the forest.’ And also: ‘Beneath a
stone no water flows. The younger brother set off, and the elder remained behind.
No sooner had the younger brother gone into the forest, than he found the river, swam across
it, and there on the other side was the she-bear, fast asleep. He took her cubs, and ran up the mountain
without looking back. When he reached the top of the mountain the people came out to meet him with
a carriage to take him into the city, where they made him their king.
He ruled for five years. In the sixth year, another king, who was stronger than he, waged war
against him. The city was conquered, and he was driven out.
Again the younger brother became a wanderer, and he arrived one day at the house of the
elder brother. The elder brother was living in a village and had grown neither rich nor poor. The two
brothers rejoiced at seeing each other, and at once began telling of all that had happened to them. "You
see, said the elder brother, "I was right. Here I have lived quietly and well, while you, though you may
have been a king, have seen a great deal of trouble," "I do not regret having gone into the forest and up
the mountain,’ replied the younger brother. "I may have nothing now, but I shall always have something
to remember, while you have no memories at all.

A Little Hero
“ Oh dear! I wish I could be one of them,” said Tom to himself. He had been reading a book
about knights and heroes, who rode through the woods slaying dragons and setting beautiful
princesses free. Wouldn’t it have been so much fun to wear a helmet and armour, carrying a
long lance, and riding a splendid horse! But there are no dragons nowadays, and knights wear
black coats like other men. I wish I had lived long ago!”.
Tom was just an everyday boy, rather short for his age and someone stout. His hair was red and
stiff, and his frank, jolly face was freckled all over.
The sun was shining brightly into the room and the leaves were peeping shyly and whispering
softly, as if to say, “Never mind about all heroes or wicked dragons! Come out and play.”
Tom jumped from his seat, put on his cap and set off down the road toward the village, as fast
as he could spin the wheels of his bicycle. In the village it was the quietest hour of the day.
Shopkeepers were taking their early tea and school children had gone off to play in the fields.
There was not a living thing to be seen except, at the far end of the street, a nursemaid with a
pram and a small child trotting by her side.
All at once, away in a distance, along the road, Tom caught sight of a horse galloping toward
him, as if it was running a race with the wind. There was no rider on its back. Its eyes were
staring, its side was panting, the bit had fallen from its mouth, and the reins were loose upon its
hot neck. Just then the child stepped off the pavement to cross the street, right in the path of
the horse. The nurse-maid was looking in at a shop window and so didn’t miss the little girl from
her side.
The horse was coming closer. If it were not stopped, it would knock down the little girl. There
was nobody to help her, except Tom. Without waiting a moment, the brave lad rode on at full
speed on his bicycle. It was a race now between the run-away horse and the brave boy; and the
boy won. For, just as the horse’s hoofs were coming down upon the little girl, Tom leaped off
his bicycle, and pushed himself in front of her.
The horse turned aside for an instant, then reared and plunged. It knocked Tom down, and
trampled his bicycle as it set off again on its wild race. The nursemaid, who was now in great
fright, first scolded and then petted the child until she sobbed, but there was no one to notice
the brave boy, who limped home slowly an in pain. His face was hurt, his clothes were torn, and
he dragged his broken bicycle—the bicycle that only a few weeks before had been new and the
pride of his heart.
“ It was nothing at all, Mother,” said Tom when he reached home. “ I couldn’t let the girl be
trampled by a run-away horse, could I? Besides, there was nobody else.” This was all that Tom
told his mother. But mothers know many things about their little boys and girls that the boys
and girls do not always care to tell.
Tom did not get a medal for his brave action and there was not a word about it in the
newspaper. That very evening, however, his father took the bicycle to the village to be mended.
As Tom’s mother rubbed his stiff shoulder and smeared some ointment on his scratched
cheeks, she looked at him with wet eyes. But Tom thought there was a smile not far behind
then tears. Then she smoothed his rough hair with her soft hand, kissed him, and called him her
own dear little hero.
Questions:
1. Who is the main character of the story?
Pelajari penjelasan berikut ini, kemudian bandingkan dengan yang telah kalian pelajari dari
video tadi
Short stories are shorter than novels because they usually only tell about one incident. Like
novels, short stories entertain or amuse the reader. The modern short stories have appeared
since the early 19th century. Short stories are one example of narratives. Like other narratives,
short stories have the following structure.
1. Orientation (it introduces the main characters and the setting, both the time and the place).
4. Coda (This part gives evaluation and points out moral of the story).
1. Characters
In a short story, a main character becomes the centre of the story with a conflict revolving
around him / her. This character will be the protagonist of the story and characters standing on
the opposite side will be the antagonist. To build the character, a writer describes them by
picturing their appearance and/ or explaining their behavior or feelings, as well as having other
characters talk about them.
2. Setting
Setting tells the reader about the tie and place the story happened. This is an element that is
hard to be left out in making the story.
3. Plots
Short stories usually have one plot so readers can finish it in one sitting. A plot has 4 essential
parts such as :
1. introduction;
2. rising actions;
3. falling actions; and
4. result of a situation.
4. Conflicts
Without a conflict, a plot won’t develop, meaning there will be no stories. Conflicts in stories
can be either external conflict ( conflict with a force outside oneself) or internal conflict (conflict
within oneself). Conflicts are not always things that someone has against each other. Conflict
may happen between man and circumstances, society, or himself.
5. Theme
Theme is something that the writer wants to convey and deliver to the readers. The theme of a
story sometimes can be seen from the title and may be represented through the use of figures
of speech, such as symbol, metaphor, simile, hyperbole, irony and illusion.
6. Point of Views
The common points of view used in stories are the first person and omniscient. In the first
person point of view, the writer becomes one of the characters in the story. The writer only
knows and feels from this person’s view. A writer with omniscient point of view is an outsider
of the story. He / she is not a character I the story, but the narrator in the story. He / she may
know everything about what a character and reveal it to the readers as in omniscient limited,
but may only know what he / she sees or hears as in omniscient objective.

decided to ask for a help from an ascetic who lived in a mountain.
The next day, they went to the mountain where the ascetic lived. They started the
journey in the morning and they managed to arrive in the place by the afternoon.
It was a huge cave and they entered it. The ascetic man greet them and asked
their purpose to come into that place. Mbok Sirni explained everything to the
ascetic man and she asked for his help. The ascetic man asked them to wait and
he walked into his secret chamber.
When the ascetic man went out from his secret chamber, he brought four small
bundles made of banana leaves in his hand. He gave it to mbok Sirni and Timun
Mas. He told them that each of the bundle contain different thing such as:
cucumber seed, needle, salt and shrimp paste (terasi). He also told Timun Mas to
bring it with her when the giant came to take her, and if the giant tried to chase
her, Timun Mas had to throw the bundle one by one toward the giant. After that
they thanked the ascetic man and went back to their house.
Timun Mas and mbok Sirni waited for the day when the giant would come to their
house, but this time they were not afraid anymore because they already had a
weapon to fight the giant. After a couple of day, the giant came to their house.
Mbok Sirni came out of the house and face the giant. She asked the giant to
release Timun Mas from their agreement, but the giant refused. Mbok Sirni called
Timun Mas and asked her to come out of the house. Timun Mas introduced
herself and stood up in front of the giant.
When the giant saw Timun Mas, his hunger get even worse. He was about to
grab Timun Mas with his hand when Timun Mas suddenly dodged and run away
from him. The giant start chasing Timun Mas, but Timun Mas was very agile so
she can buy some distance between them.
After a couple of minutes, Timun Mas started to be tired and the giant started to
catch up. She decided to open the first bundle, and the content was cucumber
seed. She throwed the bundle toward the giant and suddenly the jungle turned
into a large field of cucumber tree. In instant the cucumber tree grew around the
giant body and bind him. It stopped the giant for a while and Timun Mas
managed keep the distance between them. But it wasn’t long until the giant
managed to get out of the trap and chased Timun Mas again.
Timun Mas opened the second bundle and throw it toward the giant when she
realized that the giant was so close. It turned out that the second bundle
contained some magic needles that grow into a large field of bamboo tree. The
bamboo tree stabbed the giant’s foot so it bleed, but the giant managed to get
out of the trap for the second time.
Timun Mas was so surprised to see the giant get out of the trap easily, so she
decided to open the third bundle and throw it toward the giant. The third bundle
contained salt that magically turned the field into a vast and deep ocean. For the
third time, the giant managed to swim across the ocean easily. Timun Mas
became more nervous this time, because there was only one remaining weapon
in her hand, and it was the last bundle which contained shrimp paste (terasi).
With her remaining energy, she threw the last bundle toward the giant and in
instant the land turned into flaming lava and the giant was drowned in it and died.
Timun Mas was so relief that she finally free from the Giant who wanted to
consume her. She went back home to her mother who was waiting for her to
return home safely. They were so happy and they prayed to God to show their
gratitude. Finally, Timun Mas and mbok Sirni live happily ever after.
