INTRODUCTION
Wearable computers are computers that are worn on the body. This type of
wearable technology has been used in behavioural modelling, health
monitoring systems, information technologies and media development.
Wearable computers are especially useful for applications that require
computational support while the user's hands, voice, eyes, arms or attention
are actively engaged with the physical environment. Most notably, it is a
device that is always with the user, and into which the user can always
enter commands and execute a set of such entered commands, and in which
the user can do so while walking around or doing other activities. This
transformation allows it to be worn constantly, with the goal of becoming a
seamless extension of body and mind, equipped with various sensors which
measure heart rate, respiration, foot step rate etc, and can help in body
maintenance. Electronic circuits are built entirely out of textiles to
distribute data and power and perform touch sensing.
The most salient aspect of computers, in general, (whetherwearable or not)
is their reconfigurability and their generality, e.g. that their function can be
made to vary widely, depending on the instructions provided for program
execution. With the wearable computer (Wear Comp), this is no exception,
e.g. the wearable computer is more than just a wristwatch or regular
eyeglasses: it has the full functionality of a computer system but in
addition to being a fully featured computer, it is also inextricably
intertwined with the wearer.

Researchers envision solving problems related to memory and sensory augmentation through wearable computing by developing systems that can augment human capabilities. For memory augmentation, wearable devices can store and recall information quickly, helping users with cognitive tasks. Sensory augmentation can be achieved by integrating technologies that enhance the human senses, such as augmented reality displays and advanced sensor arrays, allowing users to experience enhanced perception of their environment. These solutions could provide new kinds of connectivity and interactions not previously possible .

The major challenges that need to be overcome for the advancement of wearable computer systems include power use, heat dissipation, networking, and privacy issues. These challenges are significant because they directly impact the functionality, user comfort, and security of wearable devices. Efficient power use is crucial for ensuring long battery life while maintaining a compact design. Heat dissipation is necessary to prevent discomfort or injury to the user. Networking challenges must be addressed to enable seamless connectivity and data transmission. Privacy concerns are critical, as wearable devices often collect sensitive personal data, requiring robust security protocols to protect user privacy .

Wearable computing might create a new kind of connectivity by integrating with smart environments and the Internet of Things (IoT), offering seamless interaction between devices and daily activities. They can establish continuous connectivity that allows users to interact with digital ecosystems invisibly and intuitively, providing personalized and context-aware information. Wearables could facilitate direct interaction with both virtual and physical environments in real-time, introducing a connectivity paradigm that naturally blends digital experiences with the physical world through continuous data streams and adaptive interfaces .

The current stage of wearable computing is comparable to earlier technological advancements such as smartphones or personal computers in that it is still in an early phase of development and adoption. Much like previous technologies, wearable computing faces challenges in societal acceptance and integration, as it requires users to adapt to a new form of technology that is intimately connected to personal life. As with smartphones, widespread adoption will depend on overcoming technical challenges, enhancing usability, and addressing privacy concerns. Social factors such as user trust and perceived utility will determine its integration into everyday life .

Wearable computing could potentially affect societal trends and individual behavior by influencing how people access information and interact with their environment. It could lead to increased efficiency in daily activities and expanded cognitive abilities by providing constant connectivity and new ways of data interaction. On the other hand, it could also pose challenges such as privacy concerns and the erosion of certain life qualities if users become overly dependent on technology. The societal impact, therefore, depends on how these devices are integrated into daily life and the ethical considerations surrounding their use .

The potential ethical concerns associated with privacy in the use of wearable computing devices stem from their ability to collect and process vast amounts of personal data continuously. These devices often track location, health metrics, and other confidential information, raising concerns about data security and user consent. If not properly secured or if mishandled, this data could be exploited for unauthorized purposes, leading to breaches of privacy. Additionally, there may be societal concerns about surveillance and the potential for these devices to contribute to a loss of autonomy or increase in digital monitoring .

Wearable computers could extend cognitive abilities by acting as a persistent assistant that provides quick access to information, thus reducing the cognitive load required for memory-dependent tasks. They can enhance decision-making processes through real-time data analytics and provide augmented reality experiences that layer additional information onto the user's perception. Furthermore, current prototypes mimic existing devices like smartphones or PDAs but are designed to allow intuitive interactions, increasing their potential to act as cognitive enhancers that help users perform complex tasks more efficiently .

Predicted impacts of wearable computing on everyday life include increased efficiency in performing routine tasks, expanded access to information, and enhanced personal health monitoring. Wearable devices could simplify interactions with technology by providing an intuitive, hands-free approach to information access, thus potentially transforming communication, entertainment, and healthcare. However, the exact impact remains speculative as societal adaptation and acceptance play key roles in how these technologies are ultimately adopted .

Textiles play a crucial role in the advancement of wearable computers by serving as the building blocks for integrating technology into clothing and accessories. They can be embedded with electronic circuits to distribute data and power and perform touch sensing, thus providing a seamless user experience. By integrating electronics into fabrics, wearable devices can be more flexible, comfortable, and practical for daily use, enhancing functionality by making them less obtrusive and more user-friendly .

Wearable computing technology is particularly suited to applications requiring continuous user engagement because it is designed to be always accessible and operational without disrupting the user's ongoing activities. These devices can be worn comfortably throughout the day, allowing for continuous interaction and real-time data processing. This is especially beneficial for tasks that require constant monitoring or frequent input, such as health monitoring systems and real-time language translation, where wearable computers can provide computational support while keeping the user's hands, voice, eyes, or attention free for other tasks .
