What I Have Learned So Far

How do social movements become a vehicle of political participation for an ordinary
individual?
- I think it’s because it attempts to change society through collective action. Example is
rally because of social movement where a group of people do some rally about the
specific issue in the government. In this example an ordinary person can be a part of
politics.

1. What roles did the movements in the colonial period play? On what bases did they frame
their issues?
- During the colonial period, the role of movements was to recruit more people to join the
causes of the revolutionary group. These movements aim to achieve independence from the
then existing colonial rule. Said movements reject the idea of colonialism and would like to
fight collectively against the colonial power's oppressive tactics and strategies.
The aforementioned movements framed their issues on the basis or lens or nationalism and
patriotism. These movements advocate for love of country, which actually also translates to
a love of independence. Said love for independence ignites an inner desire inside people's
hearts to fight for their country, to reject colonial rule, and to fight against the colonial
powers that invaded their country.
2. What are the common/unifying grounds for these movements in the said period?
- The common/unifying grounds for these movements in the said period include the
following grounds: (a) love for country; and (b) desire for independence from the colonizers
and freedom from their colonial rule of the country.

pp. 170
Why do you think people join voluntary organizations or movements? What do people get
from these organizations?
- In my opinion, I believe people join voluntary organizations or movements because
said voluntary organizations or movements advocate for the same causes they believe
in. In most cases or instances, people want to belong in a group where they feel they
have something in common with other people.

1. Can the rise of civil society organizations be attributed to the failure of governmental
institutions and political parties? Explain.
- I don't think so, because as per definition, Civil Service Organizations are the
oaggregate of non-governmental organizations and institutions that manifest interests
and will of citizens or individuals and organizations in a society which are independent
of the government. This means that CSO can stand and rise on their own without being
affected by government and political groups.
2. How can students like you help improve education and living standards in the Philippines?
Would joining CSOs help in any way? How?
- Yes, I think so that joining the CSO will help because the CSOs have their goals on
helping each of the individuals in the society. They also help each other to make the
society better. On the other hand, as a student, I can also do my own simple way of
being a good student. Being a good student means having a bright future which could
help the country's education system and economy.

1. Advocate and support health-promoting programs and health education campaigns for children;
monitor and work with other stakeholders such as private sector entities; contribute to putting
knowledge and evidence into practice.
2. When someone needs help and everyone are willing to help which is called “Bayanihan”.
3. Yes, because civil society organization (CSO) is a group of people that operates in the community
in a way that is distinct from both government and business.

1. The point of this study was to understand the relation between the state civil society. This used
elite and in-depth interviews and analysis of secondary data from the local government unit of
Quezon City and the civil society group that are closely related to the ordinance.
2. By helping the LGBT community with their rights and welfare. They conducted a research with
the member of LGBT in within their place to prove that there’s some harassment or violence
happened to them.
3. Yes, because it can provide both immediate relief and longer-term transformative change – by
defending collective interests and increasing accountability; providing solidarity mechanisms
and promoting participation; influencing decision making; directly engaging in service delivery;
and challenging prejudice. In this way, excluded groups can be effective drivers of their own
change by forming or participating in organizations that represent group interests. CSOs also
play an important role in conducting research to raise the profile of excluded groups.
4. The state relates to CSOs through the LGU by helping them with their programs and needs,
especially with the people in their barangays that needs help. I think the future of CSOs in our
country will be better if our government support and prioritize it at all cost.

1. KAMP deals with the issue of indigenous people by representing them and told them their rights
and what they deserve. It only shows that our politics are not that open with this topic, and has
many limitations about it which is the reason why the KAMP can’t full represent the indigenous
peoples.
2. KAMP is a societal response to worsening aggression against the environment and the right of
the indigenous people. This organization is important in the indigenous people for them to know
their rights especially when it comes to their lands and properties. Given the relationship it has
with the state I think it has a better future where the state will have prioritized indigenous
people welfare and rights.
