What is MCAT 101?
Anjalye S.

We are a group of students-just like you! We understand the hardships of the journey to medical
school and want to be a part of yours. As you may know, it is hard to discern what prep is right for
you or how you will be able to afford prep courses worth thousands of dollars. Our goal is to create a
space where you can find tons of free resources and advice to help you achieve your goal of becoming
a doctor. The process of preparing and applying for medical school can seem daunting, but through
accessible tutoring and content, we aim to reduce the obstacles associated with it.

Not only that, but with the support of other students who are on the same path as you are, we aim to
create a community where everyone can interact, engage and learn with each other. We understand
the long nights and lonely days that go along with the process and want to help reduce that stress of
navigating it on your own.

We would also like to introduce our very own tutoring program! With so many pricey options and
everyone claiming to have the best MCAT tutoring out there, it’s easy to become overwhelmed and
left clueless. Offering free tutoring is just one of the many steps we are taking to fulfill our goal of
providing accessible and reliable tutoring. All of our tutors have scored within the 95th percentile or
higher on the sections that they tutor in.

Be on the lookout for new information and updates as we continue to expand! Connect with us on
our social media to stay in the loop! Our Facebook offers even more free services so check those out!

Study Plan

Before you begin your prep, make sure you have all your resources and
schedule ready to go! It is so easy to procrastinate here and there so make
sure you really use your study time to be efficient.

Some students might benefit from making a schedule. It is up to you how

detailed you want it: do you need a monthly, weekly, or a day to day
schedule to keep you on top of it? If so, make sure to check in daily on your
progress. Here are some free schedules to check out by Magoosh and
here by Med School Tutors.

It is sometimes difficult to come up with a schedule that is doable and

allows you to take action! We can also help you make your own study plan
and customize it according to your hours. Feel free to email us at
info@[Link] and we’ll reply within 24 hours! We also have our
own prep course that is run by actual tutors who have scored in the 90% of
the MCAT sections they tutor. Learn more about that here!

A study plan is helpful to make sure you are progressing and not getting
behind. It is also useful to schedule in the time so you know when you are
busy. Make sure to schedule in other events such as exercise, birthdays,
holidays to avoid burnout!
MCAT AAMC Guide

Make sure to read the whole AAMC MCAT guide before starting your prep.
It is important to know what logic the AAMC uses and what type of
questions/content you can expect on the test. You can download the pdf
here to read about the MCAT essentials.

If you can afford to do so, you can also purchase the Official Guide to the
MCAT by the AAMC here for $30.

The AAMC also has other great materials that are fundamental to your
practice. We highly suggest getting these resources especially the MCAT
Practice tests by the AAMC. There are currently four available. Check out
this online bundle by the AAMC here for $268.
Practice Materials

UWorld: Simply put, UWorld is one of the most valuable tools out there. It
consists of a selection of about 2,000 practice questions spanning all four
sections of the MCAT, and it also breaks down its questions into
subcategories within the major sections. In addition, its questions tend to
align closely with the content and style of the AAMC (much more effectively
than TPR, Kap, EK, etc.). It also is much broader, and it is unlikely that a
concept will appear on the MCAT that was not present in at least one
UWorld question/passage.

There is a 7 day free limited trial available that has 100 questions. The
basic 90 day account costs $219, this is the one we recommend if you are
getting UWorld! There are other options as well. You can check them out
here. Fill this out if you are interested in the UWorld Discount!

Khan Academy: Khan Academy offers in-depth videos on certain topics

and practice questions after each set of videos. They also offer practice
questions with passages. You can find the resources here.

Jack Westin Cars: Jack Westin offers courses on the Cars section that
you can pay for, but they offer free practice as well. You can join a trial
session or use their free practice sections. Jack Westin has free practice
passages and free Cars exams with the MCAT interface that you can
utilize. Jack Westin has also converted Khan Academy passages into the
MCAT interface. The link to the website can be found here.
General Content Review

It is important to know what is on the MCAT. Make sure you skim this
AAMC document to know exactly what content is present on the MCAT. It
includes all the concepts of the 4 sections.

1. Chemical and Physical Foundations of Biological Systems Section

2. Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills Section
3. Biological and Biochemical Foundations of Living Systems Section
4. Psychological, Social, and Biological Foundations of Behavior Section

AAMC Guideline: This document posted on r/Mcat has all the AAMC
content guidelines filled in with the definitions and overall details of each
concept tested in the MCAT. It does not include the Psychology/Sociology
section because the Khan Academy (KA) document is the best for this
section.

You can refer to the Khan Academy documents for Psychology/Sociology

section in this dropbox link. There is a comprehensive 300 page review and
an abridged version of around 100 pages!
Start referring to this early on and make sure to review it plenty of times!

This document by u/MileDown also contains review sheets according to the

Kaplan Books.

Jack Westin also has the guideline outlines for the AAMC science
concepts.

If you are looking for more free resources, check out this document as well!
In the resources link above, you can find topics such as:

● Equation and formula sheets

● CARS resources
● Free practice exams
● Free notes
● Schedules
● Advice
● Study aids
● DAT resources
● Mnemonics

Plus a lot of other helpful resources!

These are some great resources to get a comprehensive review of the

concepts on the MCAT.
Books
Disclaimer: Realize that many of the third-party prep companies have an
incentive to steamroll you with overly difficult and obscure content in their exams
and practice materials. This can be discouraging, so you should consider this
when choosing a test-prep service.

Many students use MCAT books from the following companies:

● Kaplan
● The Princeton Review (TPR)
● ExamKrackers (EK)
● The Berkeley Review(TBR)

These are just a few prep companies that have thorough content review in
their books. If you cannot afford to buy these books, please email us at
info@[Link] and we will provide you with some resources!

Here are some pros and cons to the books:

Company PRO CON
Kaplan Really in depth, books Not a lot of practice
comes with 3 online problems and
Full Lengths explanations can be
confusing
TPR Practice passages Lacking content in
after each chapter and Biochemistry
3 Full Lengths
EK Essential information Pricier than
with great CARS. 32 Kaplan/TPR and no
mini exams. Full lengths
TBR Loads of practice Very detailed
information! Content explanations.
helps if you are weaker
and need review.

Videos/Websites

If you are a visual learner, then we have some great news for you! There
are really great resources and videos to explain even the toughest
concepts that show up on the MCAT. Here are some collections of the top
MCAT videos for prep!

● Khan Academy: These are the best videos and are super detailed.
They have videos for many concepts and it is a great resource for self
prep.
● The Organic Chemistry Tutor: A combination of MCAT-specific and
general content review. Very well-explained and broad-spectrum
content.
● Med School Insiders: A general YouTube channel for pre-med
students, including MCAT tips and study strategies.
● MCAT Review: A mostly text-based website (with diagrams) that
covers every single section and subtopic for the MCAT! Useful for
when you want to see what you still need to go over
ANKI

Anki is a powerful tool for memorizing a variety of things. Self-testing and

spaced repetition is what makes this a popular MCAT prep tool. Spaced
repetition allows us to learn more efficiently as our learning is spaced over
time.

HOW TO USE ANKI?

See this quick tutorial to learn how to use Anki.

Resources:
● [Link]
● u/MileDown's Anki Deck: Based on the KA 300 pg document and his
popular review sheets. Colorful and concise and contains relevant Khan
Academy links.
● Ortho528 Anki Deck:
● u/RebopBebop's Anki Deck: Comprehensive Anki deck based on the
Kaplan MCAT books.
● u/Cubene's Psychology Anki Deck: Based on Premed95's Psychology
Anki deck and the KA 300 pg doc.
● u/lecompositor's Biochemistry Anki Deck: Includes hormone function and
source, carbohydrate metabolism, amino acids, and carbohydrate/lipid
structure with mnemonics to aid with memorization.
● u/Tiramiwho's Physics Anki Deck: Correlates with the Kaplan MCAT
Physics book. It contains the major physics equations along with variable
descriptions and unit breakdowns.
Practice Full Lengths

Practice full lengths should be the core of your practice. Aim to take one
practice test every week for at least a month before your test. Here are
some free exams! Make sure to take time to review your answers to not
only the questions you’ve missed, but the ones you got correct. Go through
your processing of the questions and make sure you completely
understand the correct answer. The best practice full lengths are the four
AAMC exams if you can afford those! If not, these are some great free
resources.

Here is a sheet where many MCAT explanations are provided to the full
length problems.

BluePrint: Formerly known as Next Step. This link provides you with a free
full length exam once you sign up for an account along with a half
diagnostic exam. The free account also comes with 7 learning modules!

Altius: Register using that link to get access to a free half length exam.

Kaplan: Kaplan also provides a free MCAT exam. If you also have the
Kaplan MCAT books, you can register those and get up to 3 Full length
exams along with some science videos in the online course.

Princeton Review: Princeton Review has a free length available along with
a trial of their prep course. They also have an app with over 500 flashcards
for the MCAT.
MCAT-Prep: This company also provides another free full length practice.

You can also view more resources and exams on The Student Doctor
Network to look for more free exams or this document with List of Free
Exams that was posted initially on Reddit.

Test Day

Make sure to check the AAMC MCAT Test Day Rules and Regulations
before you go to your test center.

Here are some suggestions:

● Make sure you know where your test center is. If needed, do a test
drive a week before.
● Don’t study the day before the test, try to ~relax~ as much as
possible.
● Get to the test center with plenty of time. Account for traffic!
● Take some healthy snacks to eat during your breaks. Some ideas are
nuts, protein bars, fruit, etc…
● Do some deep breaths if you feel yourself getting lost during the
passages! Reset your mind after every section.
● Take every bathroom break. Every single one. You don’t know when
nature comes calling, and you don’t want it to be during a section. It
also gives you a chance to stretch your legs and move around a bit.

General Study Tips

● Find a nice space where you can just anchor down and sit for a long
time. Make sure to schedule in frequent breaks so you don’t end up
procrastinating when tired!
● Study focused music is a good way to get into the mindset. Brain FM
has great focus music based on a scientific approach. Check them
out here.
● A timer to help with productivity and getting off your phone is a good
idea. Apps like Flora are free and can stop you from getting
distracted.
● Building stamina is important so take as many practice tests as you
can. It is a 7-8 hour test!
