Human Development Study Guide

Human development refers to the psychological and biological growth of humans throughout their life. It starts from infancy and continues through adulthood. The scientific study of human development is called developmental psychology. Development is defined as a process that enlarges people's freedoms and opportunities while improving their well-being. Patterns of development follow either a head-to-toe or center-of-body-to-extremities progression. The life-span approach emphasizes development throughout adulthood, in contrast to the traditional view which focuses on childhood and sees decline in old age. Human development has multiple dimensions and directions that are influenced by environmental contexts over one's lifetime in a non-uniform way.
