With this activity, you are expected to achieve the following learning
outcome:
Describe the main concepts of segmental and suprasegmental features for the
identification of English sound properties.
The activity consists of:
Step 1:
Go to the Learning Environment and in the Course Contents and Bibliographic
References for Unit 1, and read Chapter one: Phonetics and Phonology definition and
distinction. In Introductory Phonetics and Phonology of English. (pp. 1-3).
Step 2:
Design an infographic using the information of the Step 1, the infographic must
contain the following aspects:
• The definition of Phonetics, also describe the articulatory features and give
examples.
• The definition of Phonology, also describe the suprasegmental features and give
examples.
• The difference between phonetics and Phonology.
Step 3:
Come back to the Learning Environment unit 1 again and read Chapter Two: The
Mechanism of Speech Sounds. In Introductory Phonetics and Phonology of English.
(pp. 5-12).
Step 4:

Based on the readings of the step 3, choose three English sounds, and describe the
articulators involved in their sound production and the place of articulation, in order
to understand the Vocal tract system. For instance:
