This document appears to be an English language worksheet about the technological world. It contains several grammar and reading comprehension exercises related to topics like double comparatives, cause and effect relationships, and a reading passage about multitasking among teenagers. The reading discusses how today's students often multitask while studying, such as listening to music, texting, and using social media simultaneously. It notes that multitasking makes students feel more productive but may prevent them from gaining in-depth knowledge about their tasks. Researchers are unsure of multitasking's long-term effects on teen development.

1. Think about the meaning of this picture:

2. Answer the questions about the picture.

a) What can you see in it?

b) Do you like it? Why? Why not?
c) Does it portray a common situation? Justify your opinion.
d) What do you think would be a suitable title for it? Give reasons.

What I see in this image is an illustration of today, people increasingly busy and without time for themselves.
I don't like this image very much because it is quite comparable to the problems we face today, it portrays
the future of young people and the pressure they have on them to be able to do everything and still be
successful. A good title for this image is "Pressure", for all the reasons mentioned above.

THE MULTITASKING GENERATION

When students are sitting in front of their computers “studying”, they're also doing something else 65%
percent of the time. In 1999, 16 percent of teenagers said they were “media multitaskers” — defined as
using several types of media, such as television or computers, at once.

It’s homework time and 17-year-old Megan Cassidy of Silver Spring is ready to study. She heads down to
the basement, turns on MTV and boots up her computer. Over the next half hour, Megan will send about a
dozen messages discussing the potential for a midweek snow day. She’ll take at least one mobile phone
call, fire off a couple of text messages, scan Weather.com and post some comments on a friend’s Facebook
page. In between, she’ll do her biology homework while listening to one of her favourite bands.
The students who do it say multitasking makes them feel more productive and les stressed.
According to Jordan Graffman, chief of cognitive neuroscience at the National Institute of Disorders and
Stroke: “One of the biggest problems about multitasking is that it’s almost impossible to gain a depth of
knowledge of any of the tasks you do while you are multitasking. And if it becomes normal to do, you’ll likely
be satisfied with very surface-level investigation and knowledge.”
However, researchers aren’t sure what the long-term impact will be because no studies have probed its
effect on teenage development and there isn’t any answer yet to whether multitasking helps, hurts or has
no effect on a teen’s development.

Technological waves are affecting every aspect of our lives: family structures, social and political structure,
the economy, the way we live, work, eat, spend our time, consume, learn, travel and communicate. They
affect our needs, desires and way of thinking. As a result, we need new instruments to deal with the new
environment. The old tools are quickly becoming obsolete and unsuitable.

1. Look at the pictures below and decide which new realities have replaced the old ones because of
new technology.

2. Read the text below carefully.

TECHNOLOGICAL CHANGES IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY

In the fifties most teens had a collection of 45s. Those small records had one song on each side. But nothing
stays the same forever. As 45s gave way to LPs, there was an increase in the number of FM radio stations
playing them, the quality of music heard at home and in public places improved.
Sony's walkman proved to be extremely popular when it came on the market. It offered listeners high quality
stereo sound in a tiny box which could easily be held in one hand. Consumers soon began making more
and more tapes containing music of their own choosing and listening to them on a walkman. Audiotapes,
not surprisingly, began to overtake sales of records. Clearly, the music industry was witnessing one of the
most remarkable changes ever to take place in a market, thanks to rapidly developing technologies.
Today, the making audiotapes has ceased to exist. Instead CDs surged on to the market, but even those
started to lose market share. With the popularity of the mp3 file, consumers are making their own customized
playlists, providing themselves with hours of listening enjoyment of music they choose to hear.

3. Answer the following questions about the text.

a. What was a 45? 45s was a small record with one song in each side of it.
b. Why did the Walkman become so popular? The Walkman becomes popular because it offered to
listeners high quality stereo sound in a tiny box which could easily be held in one hand.
c. What was the main advantage of audiotapes compared to records? The fact of containing more
songs and have the chance to choosing their own music and listening to them on a Walkman.
d. Are audiotapes still produced? Quote from the text to support your answer. Actually no. Audiotapes
has ceased to exist, and they were been replaced by CDs.
e. What has since replaced CDs. The mp3 file replaced CDs, given to consumers “the power” of
making their own customized playlist that could gave themselves hours of music.

4. Read the following text.

CHILDREN’S PLAY

Young people are spending more and more time on computers at home and school. How can the use of
computer technology make a difference in their lives? When teens use home computers to help them do
their homework, instead of watching television, it is generally viewed as positive; but when they use
computers instead of participating in sports and social activities, it raises concerns about their interactions
with peers. Because of the importance of interacting with others to gain social competence, concerns have
been raised that children who form "electronic friendships" with computers instead of friendships with their
peers may not develop their interpersonal skills.
More than one-fifth of all children between ages 8 and 18 say they have a computer in their bedroom,
suggesting that the computer may often used in solitude, robbing children of time for other social activities
and interfering with the development of real friendships. Indeed, one recent survey found that, among junior
high and high school students, more than 60% of all their computer time is spent alone. However, much of
children's "alone time" on computers appears to he spent extending social relationships by connecting with
others through social networking websites and apps via the Internet.

ESCAPING INTO A VIRTUAL LIFE

There are certain things that cause addiction. Computer games are electronic games that are
addictive. Played on a computer or on a console system, these games can occupy a person for
countless hours. Through computer gaming, people escape their reality which includes school and
work. Video games also present people with challenges they can overcome so they can feel a sense
5 of accomplishment. In a virtual world, mistakes can be undone and time can renew itself with the
push of a few buttons. Through gaming, a person can experience fantasies which cannot be
experienced in real life. In a commercial world of advancing technology and electronic entertainment,
people become obsessed with these games.
The fact that video games allow people to escape reality makes them addictive. Video games allow
10 people to get away from certain things that cause them stress such as schoolwork. Video games
are fun no matter when you play them. For many students, school can be seen as a source of stress
because of the intense workload they are faced with daily. Video games direct their minds away
from education and veer them towards the virtual world.
Children, especially males, are spending too much time on video games and not enough time on
15 schoolwork or with their family. Computer game companies have proven that people under eighteen
years of age play video games to a point of addiction because they want to evade pressures in their
lives. People often consider a job or their family life to be boring and tedious. A video game takes
away that feeling by giving gamers a feeling of excitement.
An addiction to computer games causes people to ignore things that can be very important. People
escape from daily routines through playing computer games that are exciting and entertaining.

Module VII — The Technological World

7. Answer the questions.

a. Why are computer games or electronic games played by so many people? Because unfortunately, our
lifestyle are really stressful sometimes and require too much responsibilities, leaving no space for relaxed
time. So, like the text said, computer and electronic games are a scape from reality and make us forget
about our stressed life and make us “live” freely though the inexhaustible fantasy virtual world.

b. What are the consequences of spending so much time immersed in the virtual world? You lose time to
expend with your friends and family, and that’s a shame because there’s nothing better than a great real
social life full of friends and people who cares about you. You can’t find it on a virtual world because no
matter how sounds good on it, isn’t actually real.

c. If you had the chance to start a virtual life what would it be like? How would it differ from your actual life?
Actually, I really enjoy my life, so if I had the chance to start a virtual life, probably it would be similar to my
real life. Except with more money (if does matter in this virtual world).
