Problem statement
Training is a process that provides employees with skills, information and understanding
of the organization and its goals (Shaw, 2011). On the other hand, Employee training
refers to programs that provide workers with information, new skills, or professional
development opportunities (Olalere & Adesoji, 2013). Further, Pullavi (2013) emphasizes
that every organization needs to research the role, importance and advantages of training
and its positive impact on development for the growth of the organization. There is
therefore a continual need for the process of staff development, and that training fulfills
an important part of this process. Training should be viewed therefore as an integral part
of the process of Total Quality Management. Further Elnaga and Imra (2013) posit that to
develop the desired knowledge, skills and abilities of the employees, to perform well on
the job, requires effective training programs that may also effect employee motivation
and commitment. In East Africa, most scholars have focused primarily on established
commercial institutions as case studies in an attempt to highlight the relationship between
staff training and employee performance.
