Administration of Data Protection Solutions for UNIX using

NetBackup 6.5 Exam Objectives

Note: The Data Protection Administration for UNIX (NBU 5.0) exam has been updated to software release 6.5 and is numbered
250-265. Exam 250-265 replaces the version DP-023X. All exam candidates are encouraged to take the latest version of the
exam. DP-023X is still available and will fulfill the certification requirement until the exam is retired early 2008.
SECTION 1
Install NetBackup 6.5
• Verify hardware and operating system prerequisites.
• Describe the architecture of NetBackup including the master, media, and EMM servers, and clients.
• Install NetBackup master server and media server software and verify success.
• Install NetBackup Operations Manager (NOM) and verify success.
• Install or distribute client software and verify success.
• Identify supported server upgrade paths.
• Identify the function of various NetBackup agents and options (e.g., BMR, NetBackup Vault, NetBackup Access Control
(NBAC), Snapshot Client, NDMP, NOM, clustering and so forth).

SECTION 2
Configure NetBackup 6.5
• Configure master/media/client host properties using the GUI.
• Configure tape storage devices: define robotic storage devices and stand-alone tape drives; run robot diagnostics and robtest.
• Configure disk storage devices.
• Configure tape and disk storage units and storage unit groups.
• Configure media: define volumes, volume pools and volume groups; add volumes using robot inventory; set up barcode rules
and cleaning tapes; limit the number of partially full volumes.
• Configure policy attributes that implement a policy strategy including policy type, storage destination, policy volume pool, and
multi-streaming.
• Configure policy schedules including backup types, retention policies, multiplexing, inline tape copies, and synthetic backups.
• Configure the clients that will be backed up by a policy.
• Configure the policy backup selections including directives.
• Configure online (hot) catalog backups by defining the catalog backup type, destination, schedule, and disaster recovery file;
define the disaster recovery e-mail.
• Install and configure NetBackup LiveUpdate agent, create NetBackup LiveUpdate policies, and enable the NetBackup
LiveUpdate logs.
• Implement specialized backup solutions including synthetic backups, TIR, and checkpoint restart.
• Configure media sharing and media ownership using server groups.
• Protect media using SCSI Persistent Reserve (SPR).
• Configure storage servers and disk pools such as AdvancedDisk and SharedDisk when enabled with the Flexible Disk Option.
• Configure data classifications and storage lifecycle policies.
• Configure JAVA console administration security.

SECTION 3
Maintain NetBackup 6.5
• Download and install NetBackup release updates with or without NetBackup LiveUpdate.
• Add/remove/replace existing device configuration, drives, and robots; e.g., verify firmware levels (drives, robotics, HBA,
library), verify device level OS paths, halt job operation during maintenance.
• Add/remove/modify clients and media servers using proper procedures.
• Maintain tape storage devices (verify tape drive operation and cleaning); maintain disk devices (verify storage unit availability),
add capacity.
• Change policy attributes, schedules, clients, and backup selections as required by environment.

Perform Day-to-Day Operations
• Run, monitor, and cancel or suspend NetBackup jobs.
• Run reports including NetBackup Support Utility (NBSU).
• Run and monitor restore jobs.
• Evaluate media status to determine frozen, suspended, and expired media; redistribute media as required.
• Manage media rotation; project and manage media utilization; tracking physical media locations.
• Manage backup images, including duplicating, verifying, expiring, and importing backup images.
• Monitor disk and tape capacity.

SECTION 5
Tune NetBackup 6.5
• Analyze current performance and tune NetBackup and devices where necessary.
• Optimize the backup system performance using multiplexing, multi-streaming, and scheduling.

SECTION 6
Troubleshoot NetBackup 6.5
• Diagnose and troubleshoot failed jobs.
• Identify describe and verify the correct processes and services or daemons are running and stop and restart processes and
services or daemons as necessary.
• Interpret status codes.
• Enable legacy logging; configure unified logging; set verbosity levels; view/collect system logs.
• Troubleshoot devices and media.
• Recover the NetBackup catalogs and troubleshoot common catalog-related issues.
• Troubleshoot connectivity between master, media, and client.
