Special Practices in Crop Production

This document discusses several special practices in crop production including fruit bagging, desuckering, propping, ratooning, trellising, and flower induction. Fruit bagging involves enclosing or wrapping fruits to protect them. Desuckering removes unnecessary suckers from banana plants. Propping provides support for branches or stalks heavy with fruits. Ratooning grows a new crop from shoots of the previous crop. Trellising supports plant stems and leaves off the ground. Flower induction uses chemicals, photoperiod modification, or pruning to produce fruits off-season.

Exercise 5

SPECIAL PRACTICES IN CROP

PRODUCTION
Learning Outcomes

• Define and describe the different special practices;

• Cite the objective and purposes of the special practices; and
• Apply these practices to a given crop
Special Practices

• regularly done but are particularly applicable only (unique) to

specific crop or group of crops
FRUIT BAGGING

• involves enclosing or wrapping the fruits (either individually or as group)

with suitable materials
DESUCKERING

• removal of
unnecessary suckers
from the base (mat) of
banana
• Gouging bar
• 3-4 suckers of varying
ages (3-4 months
interval) are retained
per mat
PROPPING

• a practice of providing
support to branches or
stalk which tend to bend
due to heavy load of fruits.
RATOONING

• the growing of new crop out of the shoots

arising from the previous crop.
• Advantages:
• saves time
• reduces cost of production
• Disadvantage:
• Lower yield
TRELLISING

• is a practice of providing support to the plant so that the stem and

leaves are kept away from the ground.
• Usually done in viny crops and crops that cannot stand vertically by
itself
• Objective:
• To allow better exposure of leaves to sunlight
• To avoid fruits from coming in contact with the soil.
FLOWER INDUCTION
• an effective way of
producing fruits even
during off-season.
• Various techniques:
• use of chemical
• modifying the
photoperiod
• pruning
• timing of irrigation

• Advantage:
• makes flowering in
mango more profuse and
more uniform
Use of KNO3
1-1.5% dry season
2-3% wet season

Ethephon
40 ml solution
(240 ppm + 1% urea)
