Q1. Define equality.


Ans. Equality is a state of being equal i.e. when each individual has an equal opportunity,
rights and same status. All the people are equal before the law.

Q2. Explain Universal Adult Franchise. Why is it important in a democratic society?


Ans. Universal Adult Franchise means all the adults irrespective of what religion they belong
to, irrespective of their gender, social and economic background, education they have had
are allowed to vote. It is important, as Universal Adult Franchise is based on the idea of
equality. It ensures equality for each individual as each person has one vote and same
value.

Q3. Why was Kanta so excited to stand in voting line?


Ans. Kanta is excited to vote and happy that she is equal to all of the others because each of
them has one vote.

Q4. List any four kinds of inequalities present in the society.


Ans. People experience inequalities in different ways such as:
• Social inequality (in the form of Caste system)
• Economic inequality (difference between rich and poor)
• Gender inequality (difference between boys and girls)
• Inequality based on religion (certain religions are not given equal respect)

Q5. Define the term ‘dalit’.


Ans. Dalit is a term that the so-called lower castes use to address themselves. Dalit means
‘broken’ and by using this word, lower castes are pointing to how they were, and continue
to be, seriously discriminated against.

Q6. Why do you think Omprakash Valmiki was being treated unequally by his teachers
and classmates?
Ans. Om Prakash Valmiki was being treated unequally because of his caste. He was from a
dalit family. His school headmaster and teachers discriminated against him on the basis of
his caste and asked him to sweep the school.

Q7. What do you understand by the term dignity? How was the dignity of both Valmiki
and Ansaris got violated?
Ans. This refers to thinking of oneself and other persons as worthy of respect. The dignity of
both Valmiki and Ansaris was violated because of the way in which they were treated.

Q8. Define Constitution.


Ans. Constitution is a document that lays down the basic rules and regulations for people
and the government in the country to follow.
Q9. Explain the concept of Equality as mentioned in the Indian Constitution.
Ans. (i) Every person is equal before law.
(ii) No person can be discriminated against on the basis of their religion, caste, race etc.
(iii) Every person has access to all public places including playgrounds, hotels, shops
and markets.
(iv) Untouchability has been abolished.

Q10. What are the two ways in which government has tried to implement equality?
Ans. The government has tried to implement equality by -
(i) Making laws
(ii) Implementing programmes or schemes to help the disadvantaged communities.

Q11. What do you understand by the term “All persons are equal before the law” ? Why
do you think it is important in a democracy?
Ans. This means that laws are equally applicable to all, from the president of the country to
our domestic worker. Everyone has to obey the same laws.

Q12. State the positive effects of the Midday Meal programme.


Ans. (i) More poor children have begun enrolling and attending school.
(ii) Mothers, who earlier had to interrupt their work and feed their children, now no
longer need to do so.
(iii) It has helped reduce caste prejudices as all children eat this meal together.
(iv) It has helped reduce the hunger of poor students who earlier could not
concentrate due to hungry stomachs.

Q13. What was Civil Rights Movement of America?


Ans. A huge agitation started by the African-Americans to demand equality is known as the
Civil Rights Movement. It was started by Rosa Parks, an African-American woman who
refused to give up her seat for a white man.
