Overview
Today we will learn the Pythagorean Theorem: the theorem that states that in a right
triangle, the square of the length of the hypotenuse equals the sum of the squares of lengths of
the legs. We will recall what angles are acute, obtuse, and right angles? What triangles are right
triangles (what is leg and hypotenuse of the right triangle)? What is the Pythagorean Theorem
and how we can use it. During the lesson, students will try to solve different examples with right
tringles (by finding leg length or hypotenuse).
Objectives
The objectives of this lesson are to teach each student of the following:
- Identify each side of the right triangle as hypotenuse or legs;
- Explain the Pythagorean theorem;
- How to apply the Pythagorean Theorem to find the length of the sides (legs and
hypotenuse) of right triangle.
Time: The approximate time needed for this activity to be implemented in the classroom
is 60 minutes.
Materials: calculators, piece of paper, worksheets with examples and tasks.
Activities
1) Introduction: the students will recall what acute (less than 90 degrees), obtuse
(more than 90 degrees), and right (exactly 90 degrees) angles are.
2) Definitions:
- Right triangle is a triangle in which one angle is a right angle.
- Hypotenuse is the side of the right triangle which is opposite the right angle.
- Legs are the sides adjusted to the right angle.
3) The Pythagorean Theorem: the theorem that states that in a right triangle, the
square of the length of the hypotenuse equals the sum of the squares of lengths of the legs.
4) The student will see and learn different examples of the application of the
Pythagorean Theorem.
5) The students will receive the worksheets, where they will need:
- Identify right triangles;
- Identify sides of the triangles as either legs or hypotenuse;
- Complete five problems with a partner: three problems of how to find the length
of the hypotenuse and two problems of how to find the length of the unknown leg.
