IV- PROCEDURE/ LEARNING ACTIVITIES

INTRODUCTION

The scientific study of the different levels of organization of living beings, helps us
gain an insight into the complexities of their structure and functioning. Every organism on
Earth, from the smallest to the largest one, follows this establishment. This topic is of great
importance in the field of environmental science, as it helps in establishing the
significance of every living being on this planet. Environmentalists devise ways to preserve
the ecosystem through knowledge of these levels of organization.

The life that exists on Earth is complex and varied in its forms. Living beings have
evolved from single-celled or unicellular forms, into complex and giant multicellular
bodies. In this process of development, their body systems and mechanisms have
become specialized in nature. Thus, in the course of evolution, different stages of
increasing complexity were formed.

 What I know
Direction: Explain briefly.

1. Why is it important to handle the microscope with care?

 What’s new

Direction: Read the selection below and answer the questions that follow.
Activity #1: Knowing Organisms
Have you ever asked yourself what makes you up and the other organisms around you?
Figure 2 shows a model of a human torso.

Q1. What parts of the human body do you see?

__________________________________________________________________

Q2. To which organ systems do these parts belong?

____________________________________________________________________

Figure 3 shows other organ systems

that you may be familiar with.

Q3. Can you identify these organ

systems?

Q4. How do these organ systems work together?

 What’s in it
Levels of Organizations
There are many levels of organization. Biologists differ in terms of the number of levels they
consider. In this section, we will look into 10 levels of organization. The levels will be
presented from the simplest the most complex level in a hierarchy. Take note. however,
that these levels are all related to each other and that the level below is more complex
than the level before it or the level below contains all the levels above it.

Cell
A cell is a collection of organelles that are
functioning together. t considered as the basic unit
of Me that is capable of carrying out the functions
of living things. Cells have varied sizes and shapes.

Tissue
Tissue is a group of distinct and similar cells
that work together to perform specific set of
functions. Examples of this in plants are
parenchyma collenchyma, and
sclerenchyma tissues. Examples of tissues in
animals are epithelial, connective, muscular,

and nervous tissues.

Organ
Organ consists of different tissues
organized together to perform function.
For example, the heart is made up of
different tissues that enables it to perform
the task of pumping blood to all parts of the body.

Organ system
Organ system consists of several different organs that work together to perform a broad
spectrum of functions. For example, the excretory system is composed of the kidneys,
ureters, urinary bladder and blood vessels that function in removing wastes from the
various parts of the body and eliminating them through sweating and urination.

Organism
Organism is an aggregation of the organ systems
that work together various life activities. Humans
have eleven organ systems. An organism is an
individual belonging to a particular species that has
its own distinct existence as a complex, self-
reproducing unit.

Population
Population is a group of organisms of the same
species occupying a given area. These
organisms are freely interacting with one
another. Populations are sometimes comprised
of small groups pack of wolves, pride of lions,
towns of squirrels, herd of cattle, and colony of
termites.

Community
Community consists of all the populations of
different species of organisms living together in a
given area. These organisms are interacting with
one another. Their interactions may be harmful,
symbiotic, or cooperative Examples are all the
living things in a freshwater pond, all the species in
a rice field, and all the living things in a prairie.
Ecosystem
Ecosystem consists of all the community of organisms (biotic components) that inhabit
the same area, as well as the nonliving (abiotic components) of the area and the sets
of interactions that exist between these two components.

A Savanna is an example of an ecosystem

covering a large geographical area.

Biome
Biome pertains to a collection of
ecosystems with similar climates and
covering a large geographical area.
Grasslands, savanna, deserts, and
tropical rainforests are examples of
ecosystems that cover a large
geographical area.

Biosphere
Biosphere consists of the totality of the ecosystems
of planet Earth. It also pertains to any part of Earth's
sphere where life exists. It is also referred to as the
world of life.

 What’s more
Direction: Use the descriptions on your handout to determine which level of organization
(organelle, tissue, organ, system, etc.) is being described. Write the level of organization
in the parentheses provided above the picture.
 What I have learned
 What can I do
Direction: Fill in the table below.
V. EVALUATION
Test- Multiple Choice. Choose the letter of the correct answer. Write your answer on the
space provided before the number.

throughout the body. What level of organization is an artery?
