TOPIC 4206
Description
In an extreme marathon, participants run a total of 100 km; world-class athletes maintain a pace of 15
km/h. How many 230 Calorie energy bars would be required to fuel such a run for a 68 kg athlete?
SOLUTION.
We first get the speed of the marathon participant;
Velocity v = 15km/h
Thus we have; v = (15 x 1,000 metres)/3,600 seconds
v = 4.166667m/s
We further get the kinetc energy as follows;
Kinetic Energy KE = 1/2(mv^2); where m = mass
KE = 1/2(69kg x 4.166667^2)
= 590.28 Joules
1 calorie = 4.2 joules
KE = 590.28 Joules or 140.54 calories
Number of 230 calorie energy bar required = 140.54/230
N = 0.6110 bars
