Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Distance Learning had evolved through many ages and generation. This

became the most source of teaching on this since it’s become convenient and efficient to

everyone. As COVID-19 pandemic creates a devastating effect throughout the planet,

Philippines become innovative on how they'll ready to adapt and continue the classes

with the utilization of parents as the molder of their children. (Marañon, M. J. S. et al.,

2021)

Parental Involvement is important nowadays that we rely our education on

modular distance learning and online classes. Parents are vital partners in educating

learners they're our first teacher and educator.

There are factors that parental involvement has negative effect to the student’s

academic performance. Lack and over of involvement can have a negative effect to the

students. Parents or guardians are assigned to help their child in some homework and

schoolwork. However, some parents are being overly involved to the education of their

children especially now that our educational system is based modular distance learning

and online classes. Because of that, they are becoming lazy to the point that they lose the

desire to study. The knowledge that they must supposed to learn is meaningless.

Apart from the particular learning aspect, the social aspect and routine of

faculty greatly help to shape a baby into the adult they're going to become. Though you
2

obviously love your child, it's important for her to spend time away from you to find

out the way to develop on her own so she will be able to become her own person rather

than an indoctrinated copy of her parents. Spending an excessive amount of time together

with your child during this aspect may lead to an unhealthy attachment to the parent. it is

vital for kids to be told independence; it'll help them later in life when the

time involves leave the nest and become their own people. a child too attached to his

parents may have more difficulty completing this significant step of becoming an adult.

(Koble, M. 2017)

There is also a case that some parents don't want to travel to school because they

think that they're illiterate, they feel not confident to speak or don’t know what to

speak to teachers, and that they don’t know the system of the college. This also the

rationale that almost all parents use it as an excuse to neglect their children’s education

Additionally, they're not awake to the importance of education in order that they simply

don’t care about it. Moreover, they also believe that only teacher should be liable for

their kids’ education. If their kids don’t act at school; they’ll blame teacher. They don’t

understand their responsibility towards their children’s learning. (Salin, 2017)

However, we can’t deny the fact that parents are the reason to success. A parent

is child’s first teacher and greatest asset. Parents teaches their child first in home in order

to have additional knowledge in school. Sometimes we can learn from their experiences.

Those experiences will help us to get better and to correct mistakes. Also, their certain

knowledge can benefit us to learn things about a certain topic.

Parental involvement is related to various benefits for students of all ages. in

keeping with Delgado (2017), the simplest indicator of a student's success is that

the extent to which families are involved in their education. Feeling their parents' support,

students become more motivated and develop a love of learning.

Moreover, White (2018) reported the results of two researches which showed the

positive effects of parental involvement in school of their children. One study found that

parental involvement helps give children attention and praise which, in turn, helps them

recognize their education is worthy of adult interest. As children tend to model adult

behaviors, when parents are actively committed their schooling, children will learn the

importance of education and take a look at to emulate those behaviors from their parents.

Another study was conducted by the National Education Association which showed that

family engagement at school improves student achievement, reduces absenteeism, and

restores parents’ confidence in their children’s education. Students with involved parents

or other caregivers earn higher grades and test scores, have better social skills, and show

improved behavior.

Statement of the Problem

The purpose of this study is to analyze parental involvement and therefore

the parents' perceived impact in their children's academic performance. The aim of this

study is to answer the subsequent questions:

1. How often do parents of Grade 9 learners help their children in academics each week?

2. Is there an improvement within the academic performance of Grade 9 learners if their

parents are involved?

3. Is there a major relationship between the academic performance of Grade 9 students

and parental involvement?

4. What are the implications of this study to the academic performance of Grade 9

students?

Research Hypotheses

 Null Hypothesis

o There is no significant effect between the academic performance of Grade 9

learners and parental involvement.

 Alternative Hypothesis

o There is significant effect between the academic performance of Grade 9

learners and parental involvement.

Significance of the study

The main focus of the study is to explain parents’ perception about their

involvement within the academic performance of their children. Findings were the bases

for an action plan. The findings of this study are going to be important especially to
5

folks. It's hoped that the findings will foster parents' awareness, perception, interest,

competence, and responsibility within the education of their children. This study is

additionally beneficial to the students because of the very fact that they

will acquire plenty of information from their parents.

Scope and Delimitations

The major limitation of this study is that the importance of the study to the

selected learners of Ramos National High School. This study is additionally limited by

the cooperation and veracity of the oldsters. For example, regarding the children’s

GPA, regardless of the parents confided was assumed to be accurate.

Conceptual Framework

This study described the parents’ perceptions on their involvement within

the academic performance of their children during modular distance learning on the

Ramos National High School this SY 2021-2022. The conceptual framework of the study

is presented on the following page.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter provides relevant literature and studies that supported the researcher

in designing the topic:

Related Literature:

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed how education works within the current

time. A child’s learning development has always been placed on the responsibility of the

school and teachers. However, during the pandemic, parental involvement has become

essential within the world of education. (Lim, S. P. and Rita, W. M. M. 2020)

Parents are one in every of the foremost significant factors within

the development of the youngsters. This is often because of the authority and skill they

need to shape and develop their children into motivated, inspired and lenient people with

their explicit involvement within the process of learning activities. Parents that aren’t

involved in the educational performance of their child shows sign of neglience. This, in

turn, includes a negative effect on their achievements. (Naita, I. 2021)

Parental involvement could be a crucial factor to make sure quality

education incline to high school children in their most secured and safe environment-

their own homes. Some studies proved that parental involvement is a way and a key to

success of the students. It's evident that parental involvement is only when viewed as a

partnership between educators and oldsters which is able to result to a

higher understanding on the effective parental involvement practices in promoting

learner’s achievement. (Olivo, M. G. 2021)

Related Studies:

A. Local

Parental involvement in their children's and adolescents' education is a

wonderful protective feature. Studies show that parent

involvement reception is related to improving student behavior, academic

progress, and social skills without attending face-to-face classes. Children and

adolescents are more likely to avoid undesirable behavior and environmental

stressors if their parents involve actively reception. This text defines and describes

parent engagement on modular assistance for his or her children's education.

(Gevero, M. C. 2021)

The Philippine Information Agency (2020) shares that parental guidance

and support will function an incentive for kids to be told. Studies revealed that

parental participation is that the missing link in educational equity during

this educational setup, like modular distance learning.

In accordance with Mercader & Abadiano (2020), although many parents

have struggled to urge their children to find out, many have attempted to welcome

technology and handle online learning. Their study indicated that a lot

of mothers are using the Facebook application to attach with the social media

community to assist their children become more inquisitive about their home

learning activities.
10

B. Foreign

Parental involvement can take a wide variety of forms, among them,

communication between family and school, supporting learning activities at home

and involvement in school activities have been highlighted (Schueler et al., 2017)

There is a strong support from international research showing the positive

influence of parental involvement over academic achievement, as has been

demonstrated in a variety of meta-analyses across different populations and

educational levels (Castro et al., 2015; Jeynes, 2016; Ma et al., 2016).

Research on the results of parental involvement has shown an even,

positive relationship between parents' engagement in their children's education

and student outcomes. Studies have also shown that parental involvement

is related to student outcomes like lower dropout and truancy rates. Whether or

not parental involvement can improve student outcomes isn't any longer in

question. Researchers have begun to specialize in how parental involvement

affects students, why parents do and don't get entangled in their children's

education, and what role schools and teachers can play in creating parental

involvement. Three frameworks for exploring the precursors to and effects of

parental involvement are the inspiration of a majority of the research on parental

involvement. Each approach highlights a distinct aspect of the dynamics that exist

in school-home-community relationships. (Sheldon, S. B. 2022)

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This section discusses the research method. It presents the methods used in

research design, population and sample of the study, research instruments, data gathering

procedures and statistical treatment of data.

Research Design

The researchers used a correlational research method to seek out whether the

academic performance of learners is influenced by their parents; where one or more

independent variables are not manipulated and reflects the strength and direction of the

relationship between two or more variables. The researchers employed a real

correlational research design that relies on analysis to verify or refute a hypothesis.

Furthermore, a correlation is a process of establishing a relationship or connection

between two or more measures. The correlational research approach was chosen for the

purpose of observing the relationship between the two variables.

Population and Sample of the Study

The sample of this study is the Grade 9 learners of Ramos National High School.

The researchers used the non-probability sampling, specifically, the convenience

sampling technique. Every Grade 9 students of Ramos National High School that the

researchers meet on the campus qualifies to be the part of sample.

12

Data Gathering

The researchers will conduct a study to see if parental involvement will have a

significant relationship with the academic performance of students. Afterwards, the

researchers will gather data through questionnaire and get the profile of the students if

there are any changes happened between the parents and its relationship to the academic

performance of learners.

Research Instrument

The main type of research instrument employed in this study is an adapted

questionnaire. The questionnaire elicited parental involvement and its relationship to the

student’s academic performance during modular distance learning and time allotment.

The result is to be compared.
