05-A202-Animal Development Coursework Assignment

This document provides instructions for two laboratory activities related to animal development as part of a developmental biology course. The first activity involves performing a dissection on a fish or bird to identify and compare reproductive organs to human anatomy. Students are instructed to choose an animal for dissection, research the procedure if desired, carefully plan materials and safety, perform the dissection, and submit a short report with labeled images and findings. The second activity involves identifying normal and abnormal sperm under micrographs. Students must label sperm as normal or abnormal in two images and identify specific abnormalities in three sperm based on their numbers. The assignments aim to help students explain mechanisms in animal development through hands-on experiments.

Laboratory Activity (Individual)
Home Laboratory Practice (HoLaP)
CLO2: Carry out experiments to explain mechanisms in animal and plant
development. (P3) (PLO3)

Please refer to the instruction provided.

In order to achieve student learning outcomes; CLO2 , there are TWO (2) tasks related to
experimental work.

1) TASK 1: Understanding the reproductive system

Performing Your Own Dissection

Background

Fish, avian and other vertebrates have much in common with humans. Many of the systems
and organs are the same. Yet there are many unique differences in the organs and their
functions in fish, and even between fish species. This activity will be one for inquisitive
exploration, and hands-on learning.

Objectives

The objectives are to create a dynamic hands-on experience to assist in understanding of

reproductive organs and conduct a study to understand and able to identify differences in
relation to the human reproductive anatomy.

Instructions

1. Clear in mind that for this task you are need to perform dissection on living organism.
Choose one of the following animals that will be the study of your subject. You may
choose
(i) Fish (any type of fish, fresh or marine fish, male or female, please ensure the
size is appropriate for dissection)
(ii) Avian (any type of species, bird or chicken, male or female, please ensure the
size is appropriate for dissection)
2. (This step is OPTIONAL) Once you finally made up your mind, do some research on
the YouTube on how to perform dissection on the animal that you choose. If you
have this step, please write down the web address for future reference and submitted
together with your report.
3. This is the most CRUCIAL part. Please take your time to plan your dissecting
process. Such as what materials that you need (such as scissors, knife, chopping
board etc, remember since this is a Lab Home practice you may use any objects that
can be found at your home especially in your kitchen. (Please ensure SAFETY
FIRST).
4. Once everything is ready you may perform the dissection process and documented it
in any way suits to your preference.

Reporting Sheet

2
Short & Precise report containing: Title, Materials you used, Result (containing a captured
image of the animal that you choose to dissect, complete with labelled of their reproductive
organs, NO drawing is allowed), Summary of your findings and you opinion on their
structures compare to human species and finally References and also Appendixes (if you
have other photos that you think worth to be included in your report).

2) TASK 2: Hello Sperm

Identification of Abnormal Sperm

Background

Semen analysis is a basic step in the investigation of infertility or several disturbances that
negatively affecting the sperm. Analysis of seminal parameters provides important clinical
information on the spermatogenesis and the functional competence of the sperm.
Accordingly there are a few types of abnormalities that can be found in sperm as shown in
Figure 1.

Figure 1

Micrograph 1
Look carefully and identify which sperm is normal and abnormal. On the micrograph
provided labelled each sperm with letter (N) as normal and (A) as abnormal.

3
Micrograph 2

All sperm on this micrograph have been numbered accordingly. Please observe carefully
and answer the following questions.

4
a. Identify normal sperm. Please provide the sperm number as shown in the micrograph
2.

b. Identify types of abnormality on these sperms:

Sperm (i.d no: 14) -________________________________________________

Sperm (i.d no: 20) - ________________________________________________

Sperm (i.d no: 29) - ________________________________________________
