At the end of this lesson, the students should be able to:
1. associate movement skills of “Patintero” to. physical
fitness components; and,
perform pre-designed exercises
In our previous lesson, we learned that Philippine Traditional
Games and Indigenous Games or Laro ng Lahi are games
commonly played by children, usually using native materials
and/or instruments.
In this learning guide, we will be learning all about “Patintero”
‘game and its relation to improving physical fitness
During our childhood days, we would
usually stay outside playing different
Philippine games. One of these is
“Patintero” which I think some or many of|
you are also familiar with. We would
usually play outdoor, and involve much
UNDERSTAND] — physical activity. At the end of our games,
we would usually go home with sweat,
ripped clothes, bruises and smelly bodies. It was common for us
to be scolded by our parents but it was nothing compared to the
fun and enjoyment we had with our friends and peers. We see
traditional games as the best platform for friendship. Today's
generation is different, We can see that most kids are stuck on
their phones, iPads, and computers while staying on a comer
living a sedentary lifestyle.

According to Guia, J. (2012) there is no doubt that the
Philippines is rich in culture and tradition. One of the most
significant aspects of the country’s culture and traditions is the
traditional games in the Philippines. It is very popular among,
children because these are the games or sports that they usually
play, and that no Filipino who grows up having no experience of
these traditional games. Games such as Patintero is still greatly
alive and played daily in neighborhoods by children after school
or during free time and weekends.

‘Traditional games such as “Patintero” are important because
they keep the cultural values of our ancestors alive, It teaches
children how to cooperate, strategize, and make friends with
neighbors easily. It also encourages them to appreciate the
‘outdoors, whether it will be under the clear blue skies, grassy
fields, and dimly lit streetlights.
What is Patinter
Patintero is more than a team game. In an article published
in the atalyst (2020), patintero is said to have helped in
“developing the player’s gross motor skills, hand-eye
coordination, and strategie thinking”. The game also
promotes team building. It is also known as harangang-taga
or harang taga in Tagalog while block and catch in English.
It is played either on an open field or in a covered basketball
court, In the rural areas where vehicular traffic is minimal,
children use the main road as their play area

D. Pre-Game
First and foremost, the players group themselves into two
teams: the passers and the guards (also called the offensive and
the defensive). The teams may also be referred to as the runners
and the taggers. Usually, each team is composed of 4 to 6
players each. But it may also involve more participants
E. Rules of the Game
1. The game starts with the 2 teams doing a rock-paper-
scissors (or what we locally call jak-en-poy) or by a coin
toss. Whoever wins becomes the first passers.
2. The passers position themselves at the starting point
(base), which is just behind the first crosswise line of the
rectangle. While the guards stand on the lines. A guard
‘or two (depending on the number of players) is assigned
‘on each of the crosswise lines.
3. Guards can only move along their respective lines,
except for the team leader who positions himself or
herself on the first
along the crosswise and length
4. Guards are not allowed to step

5. The guards should tag the passers that come within their
reach, including those who have run past them. But they
must do it only when their feet are on the lines. Tagging
‘a passer when none or only one foot on the line is not
valid.
6 The guards should prevent any passer from crossing the
lines
7. Passers should be able to cross all the lines as quickly as
possible, No passer should stay inside the square for
more than 3 minutes (or depending on a set time the
‘teams have earlier agreed).
8. Once a passer successfully crosses all the lines and
returns to the base without being tagged, his or her team
‘cams points.
9. Ifa passer is tagged, he or she is “eliminated” and stays
back behind the starting point. He or she waits for his or
her next tum to pass or wait until all members of the
passers’ team are eliminated
10. Once all the passers are “eliminated”, their team
becomes the Guards. And the game continues with the
‘two teams exchange roles,
