Quarter 3 – Module 9:
Clarifying Meanings
Introductory Message
This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our
dear learners, can continue your studies and learn while at home.
Activities, questions, directions, exercises, and discussions are
carefully stated for you to understand each lesson.
Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall
guide you step-by-step as you discover and understand the lesson
prepared for you.
Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on
lessons in each SLM. This will tell you if you need to proceed on
completing this module or if you need to ask your facilitator or
your teacher’s assistance for better understanding of the lesson.
At the end of each module, you need to answer the post-test to
self-check your learning. Answer keys are provided for each
activity and test. We trust that you will be honest in using these.
In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teacher
are also provided to our facilitators and parents for strategies and
reminders on how they can best help you on your home-based
learning.
Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary
marks on any part of this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in
answering the exercises and tests. And read the instructions
carefully before performing each task.
If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in
answering the tasks in this module, do not hesitate to consult your
teacher or facilitator.
Thank you.

Papa?” Jose, seemingly puzzled.

What is It
Listening to note details is a very important skill that
you should develop as a learner. Through attentive
listening, you will be able to identify the needed
information to answer the Wh- questions which your
6 CO_Q3_ENGLISH2_Module9
teacher or facilitator will ask you to test how well you
understood what you listened to. These Wh- questions are
What, Who, Where, When, Why and How.
As an active listener, you
should also be able to respond to
something you heard, especially if
you don’t get the message
clearly. But always remember that
if you want to clarify meanings
from someone speaking, you have
to use polite expressions.
Here are some polite ways to clarify meanings:
1. You may use request sentences such as:
Please, repeat it. Kindly say it again.
Explain it well, please. Come again, please.
2. You may ask a question.
Could you please repeat it?
Will you please explain it?
Can you say it again? Would you please tell me?
Excuse me, can you say it again? What do you mean
by that?
3. Another way of clarifying meanings is through
repetition.
Repeating the idea of what the speaker has said
indicates that you
want to make the meaning clear.
7 CO_Q3_ENGLISH2_Module9
For example:
“I brought you a washable face mask, my son. Use it
every day when you go out,” Father said.
“Really, you brought me a washable face mask?”
Bryan clarified.
