LESSON 1.5 - GREETINGS


Aisatsu ( あいさつ )

Daily Japanese greetings and expressions, which is very important to the Japanese culture.

Lesson Objective: In this lesson, you will learn simple greetings and phrases in Japanese Language
(Nihongo) You will use the following sentences constantly, so memorize the following. You
will be surprised by the power of these greetings if accompanied by SMILE In no time, you
will have plenty of Japanese friends.

Hello and Goodbye - Japanese greetings used in different times of the day. (Starting and ending)

Romaji Nihongo (Hiragana) English Translation

Ohayou gozaimasu. おはようございます。 Good morning (formal)


Ohayou. おはよう。 Good morning (informal)
Konnichiwa. こんにちは。 Hello / Good afternoon
Konbanwa. こんばんは。 Good evening
O-yasumi nasai. おやすみなさい。 Good night (formal)
O-yasumi. おやすみ。 Good night (informal)
Sayounara. さようなら。 Goodbye / Farewell
Dewa mata. ではまた。 See you later (formal)
Jaa, ne. じゃあ、ね。 Bye / See you (informal)
Ja, mata ne. じゃ、また ね。 See you soon (informal)
(Ja,) mata atode. (じゃ、）また あとで。 See you later (informal)

Hajimemashite はじめまして。 How do you do?


Douzo yoroshiku どうぞよろしく。 Pleased to meet you.
O-genki desu ka? おげんきですか。 How are you?
Hai, genki desu. はい、げんきです。 I am fine, thank you.
Hai, okagesamade. はい、おかげさまで Thanks for asking, I’m fine
O-yasumi nasai. おやすみなさい。 Good night (formal)
Ii o-tenki desu ne? いいおてんきですね。 Nice weather, isn't it?
Atsui desu ne? あついですね？ It’s hot, right? (summer)
Sou desu ne. そうですね。 It is, isn't it?

Thank you and Apologies – Japanese are polite and will usually accompany these greetings with bow.

Doumo arigatou gozaimasu. どうも ありがとう ございま Thank you very much (formal)

Arigatou gozaimasu. ありがとう ございます。 Thank you (polite)
Arigatou. ありがとう。 Thank you (casual)
Dou itashimashite. どう いたしまして。 You are welcome
Gomennasai ごめんなさい。 I’m sorry
Sumimasen すみません。 Excuse me / Pardon me
Doumo sumimasen. どうも すみません。 Excuse me (formal)
Shitsurei shimasu. しつれい します Excuse my rudeness / Excuse
my interrupting
Specialized Greetings – Japanese people say sentences or expressions for a particular scenario.
1. When someone is leaving and returning home.

Romaji Nihongo (Hiragana) English Translation

Ittekimasu. いってきます。 I’m leaving (and comeback)


Itterashai. いってらしゃい。 Goodbye (please go safely)
Tadaima. ただいま。 I’m back / home
O-kaerinasai. おかえりなさい。 Welcome back / home

2. When somebody visit you (ex. home, hotel, restaurant) or when you welcome visitors.

Irrasshaimase. いらっしゃいませ。 Welcome / Come in


Youkoso. ようこそ。 Welcome (ex. Writing in a
banner to welcome a group of
tourists visiting Japan)

3. Before and after eating or drinking.


Romaji Nihongo (Hiragana) English Translation

Itadakimasu. いただきます。 Thank you for the meal


Gochisou-sama (deshita). ごちそうさま（でした）。 It was quite a feast (after)

Ending Note: O-tsukare-sama deshita. (おつかれさま でした。) "Thank you for your hard work."

*used in a workplace setting but has started to be used as generic thank you in Japanese*
