What This Exercise Is About
Download and install Windows Server 20xx free 90 day Evaluation version.
What You Should Be Able to Do
Use the VirtualBox manager to create and configure a Virtual Machine, then
install Windows Server 20xx.
Warning
This lab is written on Windows. If you install Virtual Box on Mac or Linux the
steps and or pictures maybe different. ISO files can be very large if downloading
on WIFI it may take hours.
You need to make sure that Virtualization is enabled in your machines BIOS.
Enable Intel Virtualization Technology (also known as Intel VT) or AMD-V
depending on the brand of the processor. If VB installs and you can only create
32-bit guests, VT is not enabled.

___ 1 Use the Windows Evaluation Link in Black board or Google “Windows Server
Evaluations” and download the iso file of Windows Server essentials 2016. Filename will
be like 14393.0.161119-
1705.RS1_REFRESH_SERVERESSENTIALS_OEM_X64FRE_EN-[Link]
___ 2 Launch VB. In the VB GUI click the new icon to create a Virtual Machine.
Name it Windows Server 20XX, Select Type and Version
____3 Click Next. Select the memory size (More is better) I usually give it at least
2500MB. Click Next.
___ 4 Create a Virtual Hard disk now
___ 5 Select default hard disk type: VDI
___ 7 Select default of Storage: Dynamically Allocated
___ 8 Select the default size of 32 GB File location and size: Click Create
Note: A Dynamically Allocated drive only uses what it needs so no harm is
making this larger.

___ 9 In the VB manager you need to highlight your Windows VM then click the setting
icon.
___ 10 In this step you will setup a boot from file option. This way you do not have to
burn the iso file to a CD. In Storage setting: Highlight storage -1 > Highlight
Empty CD -2 > Click on CD icon 3. Ref Figure below
___ 11 You will now see a popup window > Choose a Virtual Optic Disk File
Browse to the folder that you downloaded the Windows Server image to and
select it. You will now see the name of the ISO file instead of Empty by the CD
icon.
Click OK

___ 12 Highlight your Windows VM then click the Start icon. This will power on your
VM and a console window will open.
___ 13 The Windows installation setup wizards start
Follow the prompts to Install Windows Server 20xx Standard
(Desktop Version)
Perform Custom install and select your virtual hard drive
Activate license key
Note: During installation Windows will reboot and it does not tell you to
remove the DVD/ file. On reboot you may have to select the virtual hard
drive and select boot to Boot Manager. Otherwise, you may be stuck in an
installation loop.
___ 14 This will launch the installation wizard and guide you through the steps to install.
You will define your language, time zone, Hard disk, etc. Once you complete this
select Start Installation.

Note: Follow the prompts to Install Windows Server Standard Version
(Desktop Experience)
Perform Custom install and select your virtual hard drive with the size that you
created.
Also, during the file copy steps it’s a great time to grab a Java!
Please document these install steps include a screen shot of the desktop
___ 15 Now that you have Windows Server installed it don’t really know it’s a server
yet. Currently it looks like a plain Windows machine. Explore the GUI interface,
at the surface is seems very basic. (Click and right click on start) This is the
administrator kingdom. List some of your findings of things you can do.
___ 16 What options do you see under Server Manager? Please provide a screenshot of
your installation.
