Lesson Plan in Statistics and Probability
Prepared by: Allen Dave S. Pahanguin
I. Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, 85% of the learners are expected to:
a. define statistics;
b. differentiate descriptive statistics from inferential statistics; and
c. apply the concept of population and sample in a real life situations.
II. Subject Matter
Topic: Some Basic Terms in Statistics
Integration: English (Reading and Spelling).
Strategies: 4A’s Learning Model, Cooperative Learning
Materials: PowerPoint presentation, Chalkboard, Calculators.
References: Statistics by Daisy de Borja-Marcelino, Contemporary
Mathematics
III. Learning Tasks:
Teacher’s Activity Students’ Activity
A. Preliminaries (5 minutes)
> Opening Prayer
> Checking of Attendance
B. Review (5 minutes)
The teacher will ask the students what they did The answers may vary.
last meeting.
C. Motivation (5 minutes)
The teacher will divide the class into four. He
will let them play the game entitled “GUESS THE
WORD”. First group who will guess the correct
word will earn 5 points.
Words to be guessed:
1. STATISTICS
2. DESCRIPTIVE
3. INFERENTIAL
4. POPULATION
5. SAMPLE
D. Activity (10 minutes)
The teacher will let the students find a pair
and do the activity entitled, “ANSWER ME, AND
I’LL ANSWER YOU”. The students will participate.
Each pair will ask each other the following
questions.
1. What is your weight in kilograms?
2. What is your height in centimeters?
3. How much time do you sleep every night?
4. How many are you in your family?
5. how much money do you have in your pocket?
6. What is the number of chairs in your
classroom?
E. Analysis (5 minutes)
Based from the activity conducted, the teacher
will ask the students the following questions.
1. What did you do to each other? The answers may vary
2. How did you collect the information?
3. After collecting the information from your pair,
what did you realize?
F. Abstraction (15 minutes)
The teacher will introduce and discuss the topic. The students will listen
attentively.
Topic: Basic terms in statistics
I. Statistics
- A branch in mathematics that deals with the
collection, organization, tabulation or
presentation, analysis and interpretation of
data.
- It is also a process of utilizing data to make
sound conclusions.
II. 2 BROAD AREAS IN STATISTICS
1. Descriptive
- Refers to the process that are used in presenting
and describing data.
Example: If Mrs. Uy has to describe her students,
she may collect information about their gender,
age, religious affiliation, weight height or other
categories. Then she may organize, analyze,
present and interpret her data for whatever
purpose they may serve.
2. Inferential
- Refers to the process of making inferences about
a large group, called population, based on
observation of a smaller group.
Example: If you are cooking chicken noodle soup
and you want to know it taste, then you may taste
a spoonful of it from the whole pot to get an idea of
its taste.
III. POPULATION VS. SAMPLE
1. Population
- It consists of all the subject (people, objects,
events) that are being studied.
2. Sample
- Refers to a group of subjects selected from a
population of interest.
Example 1: If you with to draw a conclusions
about the weights of 5000 students in your school,
you may examine only 200 students selected from
the 5000 students.
Example 2: If you want to know the amount of salt
is a sinigang, then you may taste a spoonful of it
from the whole pot.
IV. PARAMETER VS. STATISTIC
1. Parameter
- The numerical value that describes the
characteristics of a population.
Example: After a nationwide survey, the National
Statistics Office (NSO) reported that the average
size of a Filipino family is six persons. Here the
parameter is 6 persons.
2. Statistic
- Any obtained from a sample. It is called sample
statistic or simply statistic.
Example: After collecting data, you observe that
most of the 200 students are 17 years old. The
statistic here is 17 years old.
H. Application (10 minutes)
The teacher will have a quiz bee. He will divide the
class into 6 groups with 4 members each. He will
provide illustration boards and chalks. The quiz
bee will be divided into two parts and it consists of
3 questions each part.
Expected Answers:
Questions:
Part 1.
Part 1. Identify whether each of the following
1. Descriptive Statistics
situations makes use of descriptive statistics or
2. Inferential Statistics
inferential statistics.
3. Inferential Statistics
1. Mr. Cruz checked the classroom attendance and
Part 2.
recorded the names of the absentees.
4. P: 459, S:100
5. P: 100, S: 20
2. In a pen factory, a production operator is asked
6. P: 1 cup; S: 10ml
to check 20 pens from each box of 100 pens to
determine the quality of the product.
3. A certain supermarket, offers free taste of a
brand of fruit juice. Each customer is offered 10
ml of juice in a cup.
Part 2. Identify the population and the sample in
each of the following situations.
4. There are 459 senior students in a certain
university. For the purpose of determining whether
senior students want to have their graduation ball
at Gold Hotel or at Diamond Tower, the senior
council decided to ask the first 100 seniors who
entered the university gate regarding their
preference.
5. In a pen factory, a production operator is asked
to check 20 pens from each box of 100 pens to
determine the quality of the product.
6. A certain supermarket, offers free taste of a
brand of fruit juice. Each customer is offered 10
ml of juice in a cup.
IV. Evaluation
Application serves as the evaluation.
V. Enrichment/Assignment
The teacher will let the students search on the internet the different types of
variables.
