Classroom Design

Kierra Elliott designed a preschool classroom to incorporate five developmentally appropriate aspects: texture, color, furniture, elements, and focal points. The classroom includes a soft rug and bean bag chairs in the library area to promote touch and sound senses. Tables of different colors are used to designate different activity areas. Furniture is at children's height for independence. Three windows provide natural light to benefit health and concentration in different areas. The pretend play kitchen and group activity center are focal points based on child feedback.

I plan to incorporate these five aspects of an appropriate Early childhood classroom by:

Texture – I have a comfortable environment which is the library. It has a soft rug in the middle of the area along with bean bag chairs. I chose these
items because they are soft to touch and also you can use two senses touch & sound. I have a textured wall in the art class also a sensory area just
so they can get the feel of things. Children have questions and I hope I will be able to answer them. (Emotional and Social Development)

Color - I used four different colors. Just to be on the safe side. My art table is green, APL room has a black table, the ESD table is blue, HPD and
LDC room is full of toys to promote fine motor skills and also communicate with others in the area, and lastly, Sensory Play with CD will help them
with thinking and reasoning. The purple table indicates that it is meal time. I also have a yellow rug so that I can indicate to them that it’s group
activity time. (Language Development and Communication)

Furniture – The cubbies will have their name so they can get used to seeing it written out. I have naptime cots and also cribs. Every item that the
children will need is at reach. Nothing will be too high for them. They will have independence. (Health and Physical Development)

Elements – I have three windows. The windows are the natural light in the classroom. It benefits the health and concentration of the children It will
make them calmer and focused. I have light in the pretend play area, motor skills area, and next to the kitchen area. (Emotional And Physical
Development)

Focal points – The focal point of my classroom are the pretend play kitchen and the group activity area. I asked 8 kids and 3 loved the play kitchen
3 loved the library 2 love the group activity center. When asked why their reasoning was all the same. “I don’t know, I just like it.” (Cognitive
