Maintenance, servicing and repair of UVC disinfection systems may be carried out only by the
manufacturer or by an agent that has been expressly authorized in writing by the manufacturer!
Only original replacement parts or replacement parts expressly approved in writing by the
manufacturer may be used. The use of non-original parts can result in damage to the UVC
disinfection systems! Failure to comply will invalidate the warranty and guarantee on the UVC
disinfection systems and could also lead to reduced disinfection performance!

Irradiation Systems
1.1 General Safety Instructions for UVC Disinfection Systems
AQUAFIDES UVC disinfection systems have been electrically and mechanically tested by the
manufacturer. Faulty operation or improper use of the systems will result in risks to:
• people, animals and artificial products that are supplied with some medium - typically water or
another liquid medium - that is not of sufficient microbiological quality.
• the health of the operating personnel:
damage to eyes and skin from UVC radiation.
All persons who are concerned with setting up, commissioning, operating, maintaining and
servicing the UVC disinfection system must be appropriately qualified and have thoroughly read
and understood the instruction manual. This is necessary for their own safety as well as to
prevent the UVC disinfection system from dispensing water that has not been disinfected.
Before working with the UVC disinfection system, it is imperative that the instruction
manual be read and understood. Installation, commissioning, operation and maintenance
of the UVC disinfection system may be carried out only by personnel authorized by
AQUAFIDES. These persons must have been appropriately trained by AQUAFIDES.
When working with an activated UVC disinfection system, a face shield must generally
be worn for the protection of the eyes and facial skin. These special shields are
available as accessories from AQUAFIDES. This face shield is for protection from
UVC radiation and glass splinters (from breakage of the quartz sleeves due to
incorrect handling).
When working with a UVC disinfection system, it is imperative that protective clothing
offering sufficient UV protection be worn. This special protective clothing is available as
an accessory from AQUAFIDES.
When working with a UVC disinfection system, it is imperative that protective gloves be
worn that offer sufficient UV protection as well as protection against cuts. These special
gloves are available as accessories from AQUAFIDES.
The disposal of scrap electronic and electrical goods, including UVC lamps, as household
waste is not permitted. Please dispose of these scrap goods in the proper fashion at the
locations or specialist companies designated for this.
Without the safety measures described above, damage to the eyes (painful inflammation,
comparable with injuries caused by welding) is possible within just a few seconds of eye
contact, even at a distance of several meters. Damage to the skin (severe sunburn) may
occur after a few minutes. These injuries do not usually become apparent until a few
hours afterwards.
In order to prevent accidents and possible consequent long-term disability resulting from
inappropriate use of AQUAFIDES UVC disinfection systems, all the relevant safety
precautions must be noted and observed. Incorrect handling of the UVC disinfection
system can lead to damage to health. Employ only trained and authorized personnel for
these tasks.

Before working on the control cabinet or irradiation chamber, be certain to pull out the
power plug and wait at least 5 minutes until all components have discharged. This
applies to systems with power plug.

Ensure that adequate potential equalization between the control cabinet and the
irradiation chamber has been established.
In order to prevent accidents and possible consequent long-term disability resulting from
inappropriate use of AQUAFIDES UVC disinfection systems, all the relevant safety
precautions must be noted and observed. Incorrect handling of the UVC disinfection
system can lead to damage to health. It goes without saying that all work on electrical
systems must be carried out only by professional electricians.
Any break in the potential equalization, either within or outside the machine, or
detachment of the protective conductor can result in the UVC disinfection system
becoming dangerous. Deliberate disconnection is not permitted and is grossly negligent.
Electric shock! Some electronic components must, in addition, also be discharged
separately after switching off the power supply to the UVC disinfection system
- see discharge points for this, or else open the control cabinet, at the earliest, 5 minutes
after switching off the power supply!
Warning of dangerous electric voltage. If the instructions are not followed, then severe
injuries, long-term disability, or death can occur.
Inspections, maintenance or repairs that must be carried out on the opened or
disassembled UVC disinfection system while it is switched on may be carried out only by
an authorized technician who has been trained accordingly by AQUAFIDES and who is
sufficiently familiar with the hazards associated with the work.

Before working on the irradiation chamber, be certain to pull out the power plug and

When working at the irradiation chamber, always wear a face shield for your safety. This
gives protection from UVC radiation and glass splinters.
When dismounting the UVC lamps, the quartz sleeves, and the sensor system, pay
attention that the UVC disinfection system is switched off and not pressurized, because
damaging UVC radiation is emitted through the quartz windows of the measuring window
tube and the UVC lamps. Protect both EYES and SKIN from this UVC radiation, or else
avoid exposure altogether.

During operation of the AQUAFIDES UVC disinfection system, the UVC lamp must not be
removed from the irradiation chamber, since this could result in severe damage to health.
Protect eyes and skin from UVC radiation or, preferably, avoid completely.
In order to prevent accidents and possible consequent long-term disability resulting from
inappropriate use of AQUAFIDES UVC disinfection systems, all the relevant safety
precautions must be noted and observed. Incorrect handling of the UVC disinfection
system can lead to damage to health.
Before cleaning, maintaining, repairing or replacing parts of the irradiation chamber, the
machine must be disconnected from all power supplies and the hydraulic system must be
depressurized. These tasks may be carried out only by appropriate technicians who are
acquainted with and understand the UVC disinfection system and its environment as a
complete system.
Do not open the irradiation chamber until it has been depressurized and emptied.

I. General information
1. AQUAFIDES deliveries, services and offers shall be made exclusively on the basis of our general terms and conditions, including for all future business relations, to the extent they are not expressly agreed to once again.
These terms and conditions shall be deemed to be accepted no later than upon acceptance of the delivery item/services. Deviating provisions or conflicting confirmations of the purchaser making reference to his terms and
conditions or conditions of purchase are hereby repudiated and do not become part of the contract.
2. Modifications of our terms and conditions are only valid if we accept them in writing.
3. All agreements including any ancillary agreements, promises, advice or other statements of our employees/representatives/vicarious agents are only legally binding if they are confirmed by us in writing. Compliance with
the written form requirement can only be waived by us in writing.
The requirement for written confirmation is also satisfied if documents are transmitted via fax to the respective other party to the contract. The authentic contractual language and the language to be relied upon in the event
of questions regarding interpretation is German.
II. Offer
1. AQUAFIDES is bound by an offer for three months provided no other binding period has been expressly agreed upon.
2. The cost estimates, offers, drawings and other enclosed documents and the conceptual design of the AQUAFIDES systems and technologies are the intellectual property of the AQUAFIDES Company as well as its
suppliers and are subject to statutory copyright. They may neither be handed over nor disclosed, in whole or in part, to unauthorized third parties without our express written consent. For this purpose, the currently valid
statutory provisions shall apply. By way of precaution, it should be noted that parts of our systems are protected by domestic and foreign patents.
III. Conclusion of the contract
1. The order is only deemed to have been accepted if it is confirmed in writing by AQUAFIDES or is immediately executed.
2. The advice of our employees in in-house and field service is given according to the best of their knowledge and according to the state of the art. It is based on normal operating conditions. Should the conditions of use, e.g.
water ratios, change during the period between our offer and the delivery, the purchaser is obligated to notify us thereof in writing.
IV. Scope of supply
1. The scope of the supply is determined by our written order confirmation.
2. Addenda, amendments, etc. must be confirmed by AQUAFIDES in writing.
V. Delivery Periods
1. The delivery period begins on the day of our order confirmation but not before complete clarification of all technical and commercial details.
2. The delivery period shall be deemed to have been complied with if by the expiration thereof the delivery item has left the factory or readiness for shipping has been communicated.
3. Compliance with the delivery period is subject to fulfillment of the contractual obligations of the purchaser.
4. The delivery period shall be reasonably extended in the event of measures in the context of labor disputes, in particular strikes and lockouts, as well as upon the occurrence of unforeseen hindrances, even when they
occur during a delay in delivery. This shall also apply if these circumstances arise with sub-suppliers. A reasonable extension of the period shall also occur if official or other information of the purchaser necessary for the
execution of the delivery is not provided in a timely manner. The same shall apply for a subsequent modification of the order.
5. The purchaser must immediately retrieve goods reported as ready for shipment; otherwise AQUAFIDES is authorized to store the goods at the cost and risk of the purchaser. The risk of accidental loss or accidental
damage passes to the purchaser at the point in time at which readiness for shipping was notified.
6. AQUAFIDES is authorized to otherwise dispose of the delivery item after setting a reasonable grace period and to supply the purchaser with a reasonable extension of the period. This shall have no impact on the fulfillment
and due date of the stipulated payment obligations of the purchaser.
7. In the event of a delay in delivery or default in delivery, the purchaser is authorized, after a reasonable grace period has been set, to withdraw from the contract in respect to the portion not yet performed after expiration of
the extended delivery period in accordance with Articles 4 and 6 or after the agreed delivery period has been exceeded.
VI. Price/payments
1. The prices, plus the statutory VAT, are effective ex works excluding packaging, insurance and loading, to the extent that no other agreements have been made.
2. The goods will be packaged to the extent we deem necessary according to customary commercial practice and at the cost of the purchaser.
3. Unless otherwise agreed in writing, our invoices are immediately due and payable without deduction and free of transaction charges to the designated account of AQUAFIDES.
4. AQUAFIDES can require reasonable installment payments for completed portions of the work to be produced or for materials and components specially procured or delivered.
5. The acceptance of foreign currency requires a separate agreement, with interest and costs of discounting being borne in all cases by the purchaser. Payment of the invoices occurs only when the final credit entry is made.
6. It is agreed that default interest shall apply in the event the time for payment should be exceeded, upon default of acceptance and upon delay in payment of an installment in accordance with the Swiss Code of Obligations.
In the event of default, the customer is obligated to compensate for the default interest as well as all judicial and extra-judicial enforcement costs, in accordance with the Swiss Code of Obligations. Irrespective of the
allocation of the customer, incoming payments will be credited first to costs, then to interest already accrued and lastly to the outstanding principal, first to the oldest maturity date in each case.
7. The purchaser is not entitled to any rights of set off or retention, except when his counterclaims have been ascertained and recognized as uncontested in writing by AQUAFIDES or have been judicially established as
legally binding.
VII. Transfer of risk and receipt
1. Risk passes to the purchaser upon dispatch ex works, even if freight paid delivery has been agreed upon. If shipping is delayed as a result of circumstances for which the purchaser is responsible, then risk passes to the
purchaser from the date of readiness for shipping.
2. The route and type of transport will be specified by AQUAFIDES.
3. Delivered goods must be received by the purchaser even if they have minor defects. The purchaser must retrieve and accept the goods within 14 days after receipt of the notification of readiness for shipping.
4. If a defect-free work is not accepted by the purchaser in a timely manner, AQUAFIDES can, at the expense of the purchaser, commission a generally sworn, judicially certified expert to determine whether the work has
been produced in accordance with the contract. The purchaser is obligated to allow the expert to examine the work. If the purchaser refuses to allow the expert to examine it, the work shall be deemed to have been
produced in accordance with the contract.
VIII. Retention of Title
1. AQUAFIDES reserves ownership to the delivery item up until receipt of all payments including interest and the costs of any litigation.
2. The purchaser may neither pledge nor assign the delivery item as collateral. He must immediately notify AQUAFIDES of pledges, as well as attachments or other court orders by third parties.
3. The purchaser hereby assigns to AQUAFIDES all claims the purchaser has which arise from resales against other recipients or against third parties, regardless of whether or not the goods are resold after processing. He
agrees to note the assignment in his books.
4. The purchaser is prohibited from reaching agreements with his purchasers which might exclude or impair rights of AQUAFIDES in any manner whatsoever. The purchaser shall remain empowered to collect the claims
assigned to us, even after the assignment. However, our authorization to recover the claims independently shall remain unaffected hereby, as long as the purchaser does not comply with his payment obligations in
accordance with the order. AQUAFIDES can require the purchaser to inform us of the assigned claim and its debtor, to provide all details necessary for collection, to hand over the associated documents and to notify the
debtor of the assignment.
5. To the extent the goods delivered that are subject to retention of title are resold with other goods not belonging to AQUAFIDES, the claim of the purchaser against his purchaser shall be deemed to be assigned in the
amount of the delivery price agreed upon between AQUAFIDES and the original purchaser (including sales tax, interest and enforcement costs).
6. If the value of securities provided to AQUAFIDES exceeds the amount of the claims of AQUAFIDES, AQUAFIDES may at its discretion release the security upon request of the purchaser.
IX. Liability and defects
1. AQUAFIDES warrants for the period of one year after the time of delivery/performance that the delivery item/the services are free of manufacturing and material defects and/or have been competently executed and that
features warranted in writing are present. The purchaser must notify AQUAFIDES in writing of defects immediately, but no later that within one week after delivery/performance. Otherwise all warranty or other claims shall
be forfeited. Transport damages must be immediately documented upon delivery and reported to the delegated carrier and AQUAFIDES in writing. Notifications of defects must always be made in writing and itemized.
The warranty excludes damages and defects that are not our responsibility, in particular as a result of improper storage, assembly, operation or maintenance, unauthorized change to the delivery item, other customer-
related malfunctions or force majeure and natural wear and tear. The use or the installation of non-original components/replacement parts or components/replacement parts not approved by AQUAFIDES as well as the
maintenance of systems/system components by someone other than AQUAFIDES or by companies authorized by AQUAFIDES excludes any warranty or other claim.
If the purchaser is a consumer in terms of the Swiss Civil Code, the statutory provisions shall apply for liability for defects.
2. Specific AQUAFIDES terms of guarantee shall apply for UVC lamps, in contrast to the General Terms of Guarantee.
3. Warranty claims shall be fulfilled free of charge through remediation of defects or replacement of the goods/service, at our option. If the rectification of defects or subsequent delivery or replacement service fails after the
purchaser has set a reasonable grace period, the purchaser may demand a reduction of the price or rescission of the contract, at his option. AQUAFIDES shall only be liable for the breach of material contractual
obligations.
Reimbursement of consequential losses caused by a defect is excluded. We assume no liability for our customers for loss or damage arising in the course of transaction processing, unless it can be traced back to
intentional or grossly negligent conduction our part. The customer waives the defense of a completed legal transaction regardless of the legal grounds.
X. Law and withdrawal (impossibility, contractual adaptation)
1. If unforeseen events arise in terms of Item V., which substantially change the economic significance or the content of the delivery or service or substantially impact our operations, the content of the contract is to be suitably
adapted.
2. In the event of the imminent financial collapse of the purchaser (e.g. petition for the commencement of bankruptcy proceedings, opening of a composition proceeding, insolvency, default in payment), AQUAFIDES may
likewise withdraw from the contract with immediate effect.
XI. Data Protection
1. In accordance with the Data Protection Act, it should be noted that AQUAFIDES stores and digitally processes data of our customers. This data is only used for the purpose of legally performing tasks which are part of the
mutual business and contractual terms and conditions.
XII. Validity/place of performance/venue
1. In the event that a provision of the contract is or becomes invalid, the remainder of the contract shall be unaffected. The corresponding provision shall be replaced by one which best approximates to the wording, meaning
and purpose of the contract.
2. Swiss procedural and substantive law shall apply exclusively; as agreed, the UN Convention for the International Sale of Goods shall not apply. The registered office of AQUAFIDES, currently CH-8304 Dietlikon, is
stipulated as the place of performance. The parties to the contract, in accordance with Swiss Civil Code/Swiss Code of Obligations, agree that the court with territorial jurisdiction for the registered office of AQUAFIDES and
with subject matter jurisdiction shall be the competent court for all legal disputes concerning the existence or non-existence of a contractual relationship and for all legal disputes arising from such a contractual relationship.
However, at the option of AQUAFIDES, the purchaser can also be sued in its general court of jurisdiction.
At the option of AQUAFIDES, any disputes arising from contracts and the legal transactions based thereon or any disputes that relate to their breach, cancellation, nullity can be ultimately decided in accordance with the
Rules of Arbitration and Conciliation of the International Court of Arbitration of the Swiss Chambers of Commerce, Zürich, by one or more arbitrators named in accordance with these rules. Swiss substantive law shall be
used exclusively within the context of these arbitration proceedings; the UN Convention for the International Sale of Goods shall not apply. The language to be used in the arbitration proceedings is German.

The General Terms and Conditions of AQUAFIDES GmbH apply as a matter of course
within the bounds of statutory warranty obligation, insofar as nothing else has been
agreed in writing in the contract of sale.
The warranty and liability on the part of the manufacturer is void in cases of damage and
injury that arise as a consequence of operation, installation, or maintenance that is not
appropriate for the system,
such as, for example:
• operating errors, if the instructions regarding safety, operation, maintenance
and repair are not followed
• improper use of the UVC disinfection system
(usage for purposes other than those intended)
• use of replacement parts that have not been approved by the manufacturer for
the UVC disinfection system
• removal or manipulation of safety equipment, or failure to use it
• modifications to the UVC disinfection system without the written permission of
the manufacturer
• adjustments by service and maintenance personnel that have not been
authorized by the manufacturer
• if work of any kind has been carried out on the UVC disinfection system
incorrectly and with unsuitable tools
• if work, especially on the control cabinet, has been carried out by personnel
who are not appropriately trained and authorized
• incorrect servicing and maintenance
• wear due to aging, incorrect installation, or incorrect operation of the UVC
disinfection system
• The assembly, installation, maintenance and servicing of the AQUAFIDES UVC
system may be carried out only by a qualified and appropriately authorized
technician who is able to produce authorization certification by AQUAFIDES to
do this work. The technician must have been trained accordingly. In addition to
this, the technician must possess the qualifications required by law to carry out
these tasks.

3.1 Description of the UVC Disinfection Process
3.1.1 Introduction
UVC disinfection is a purely physical process whose natural principle of action has been copied
from the sun.
The principal disinfecting effect of ultraviolet (UVC) rays on microorganisms arises from the
action of the energetic UVC light. The best effectiveness is achieved using UVC light with a
wavelength of 254 nm (nanometers). The DNA (genetic information carrier) of the bacteria and
viruses present in the water is damaged by the UVC rays. This results in inactivation of the
microorganisms and ultimately in cell death. Thus UVC light kills pathogenic microorganisms in
a matter of seconds and thereby prevents their further reproduction.
Drinking water was disinfected by means of UVC irradiation for the first time about 100 years
ago. However, as a result of the further development of chlor-alkali electrolysis, this process
was again supplanted by increasingly cheap methods of chlorination. Chlorination was thus the
most important method of sterilization for decades.
The formation of organohalogen compounds associated with chlorination in the presence of
dissolved organic matter together with the diminishing acceptance by the population of chemical
substances in the food chain led to the search for alternative disinfection processes.
Out of all the methods of disinfection, the disinfection of drinking water using ultraviolet light in
the UVC range comes closest to meeting the demand for untreated water because this process
does not alter the natural taste and mineral composition of the water.

3.1.3 Basic Physical Principles
UV rays are energetic electromagnetic rays that are present in the natural spectrum of the
radiation emanating from the sun.
3.1.4 Characteristics of UV Radiation
UV-A Radiation
Spontaneous and rapid tanning of the skin, which does not remain very long. The skin does
not build up a protective layer.
UV-B Radiation
Stronger than UV-A, responsible for the skin’s natural sun protection. The corneal layer
becomes thicker; the skin’s capacity for self-protection is increased by a factor of 5. As a
second protective mechanism, increasing amounts of melanin are produced and laid down
in the surface of the skin. The more that is laid down, the browner one becomes.
UV-C Radiation
If the energetic UVC rays impinge upon unprotected skin, severe burns can appear within a
short time. The formation of skin cancer is promoted (which is aggravated due to the lack of
protective ozone layer). In microorganisms, the genetic information carriers are damaged,
which results in cell death.

3.1.5 Effect of UVC Light

3.1.7 Influencing Variables in UVC Disinfection
In order to achieve a reduction in microbes of the required standard, it is necessary to consider
the potential influencing variables at this point. In doing so, it can be seen that the correlation
between the effective UV dosage and the microorganisms present is of great significance in
reducing the number of microbes. The following factors must be taken into account:
3.1.8 Turbidity and Transmission
The turbidity of a medium specifies how much of the irradiating energy is scattered by
undissolved particles. The energy source shines in the visible as well as in the infrared range of
400 - 860 nm. The viewing angle is 90°. The UV transmission cannot be inferred from the
turbidity.
The UV transmission of a medium specifies the amount by which the irradiating energy is
reduced within a defined layer thickness. The UV transmission is measured at 254 nm. The UV
transmission includes all dissolved and undissolved constituents of the water that cause
attenuation of the irradiating energy.

Irradiation Systems
4.1 Choice of Location
It is essential that the following points are noted and observed when installing the
AQUAFIDES irradiation chamber for the UVC disinfection system:
▪ The installation space must be sufficiently large that the UVC lamps can be changed and the
protective quartz sleeves removed without difficulty, and that free access is provided to the
UVC sensor system, the air bleeding and drainage facilities, and the servicing area. Free
space must be maintained for these purposes - see under "Dimension Sheets" in this
instruction manual.
▪ Please take note of the options for installation of the irradiation chamber in section 4.3.
▪ The location of the control cabinet must be protected from the weather and be frost free (min.
5°C). A maximum temperature of 30°C should not be exceeded. Specially designed models
are necessary for use at higher and lower temperatures.
Rooms in which acids or the like are stored are not suitable.
▪ The AQUAFIDES UVC disinfection system cannot be set up outside.
If this is required, a special design is necessary.
▪ The UVC disinfection system is to be protected from direct sunlight.
▪ If condensation is present in the treatment room, the room must be equipped with a suitable
air dehumidifier.
▪ The UVC disinfection system must not be exposed to too much dust.
▪ The room should be easily accessible so as to ensure problem-free maintenance of the UVC
disinfection system (service friendly).
▪ The installation room must have openings (or such openings must be planned) suitable for
installing the UVC disinfection system. You can find the dimensions of the components under
“Dimension Sheets” in this instruction manual.
▪ A drain must be provided in the treatment room so that water that accumulates when the UVC
disinfection system is drained, bled, or flushed can be removed.
▪ The UVC disinfection system must be installed such that is protected from pressure blows,
vibrations, and the like. Support bracing must be provided for the irradiation chamber.
▪ Sufficient space must be available in the area of the UVC sensor system to dismount and
clean the UVC sensor and measuring window tube. The space available must also be
sufficient to allow the UVC sensor to be checked with the reference sensor without hindrance.
Care must be taken that the UVC sensor system is not unnecessarily exposed to water,
contamination, mechanical damage and the like.
▪ The irradiation chamber must be installed such that it cannot run empty and is always filled to
the top with water - whatever the condition of the system!
Operating the UVC disinfection system without water may result in damage
to the disinfection system and the waterworks as well as injury of the
operating personnel!

4.4 Technical Data

4.5 Fitting and Installation
It is essential that the following points be noted and observed concerning the mechanical
installation of the AQUAFIDES UVC disinfection system:
The piping and irradiation chambers must be suitably supported such that the irradiation
chamber and the flanges (or thread connections) are not stressed by their own weight (that is
the weight of the irradiation chamber and the water).
The irradiation chamber must be fitted and operated without placing it under stress.
Where irradiation chambers are fitted above ground level, attention must be given to the
provision of suitable structural measures to allow for maintenance of the UVC disinfection
system. For example, by means of construction staging, fixed ladders, or platforms on which
both the operating personnel and the service technicians can safely stand in order to carry out
maintenance and servicing work.
Suitable isolation valves are to be fitted before and after the AQUAFIDES UVC disinfection
system so that the system can be depressurized for maintenance or, if required, dismantled.
If an automatic bleed valve is to be used, the outlet of the bleed valve must be permanently
attached to a drainage pipe so that any water spraying from it does not affect the functioning of
the UVC disinfection system and the UVC sensor system.
If a bypass line for the AQUAFIDES UVC disinfection system is planned, then 2 hand valves
and a drainage valve are to be provided for the bypass line. These hand valves are to be fitted
such that they are located as close as possible to the inlet and outlet pipes of the UVC
irradiation chamber. It is essential that a drainage valve is provided for the bypass line.
It is recommended that a suitable pre-filter be fitted before the AQUAFIDES UVC disinfection
system in order to remove any particulate matter (sand, splinters, and suchlike).
Sufficient clearance for the UVC monitoring system is to be maintained at the UVC irradiation
chamber, so that the UVC sensor and the measuring window tube can be cleaned, recalibrated,
and changed.
The UVC irradiation chamber must be installed such that it cannot run empty - never operate
the UVC lamp without water! - and is always filled to the top with water. Adequately bleed any
air from the UVC irradiation chamber after every use. Whatever the status of the system, it must
be ensured that the UVC irradiation chamber is entirely filled with water.
The room height (or width, depending on the orientation in which the UVC irradiation chamber is
installed) must be large enough to permit the UVC lamps to be changed and the protective
quartz sleeves to be removed without difficulty. For this, a minimum clearance see “Dimension
Sheets for Irradiation Chambers” must be maintained above the UVC irradiation chamber.
4.6 Installation Diagrams for UVC Disinfection Systems
Whichever installation diagram is most applicable for you depends on the particular
circumstances of your site. It is also possible that your system needs to be installed in some
way that differs from these diagrams. If you are not sure, contact the manufacturer,

Irradiation Systems
5.1 Choice of Location for Fitting the Control Cabinet
It is essential that the following points are noted and observed when installing the
AQUAFIDES control cabinet for the UVC disinfection system:
A clearance distance of at least 300 mm must exist above and below the control cabinet for
convective ventilation.
A sufficient, stable electrical supply must be guaranteed. In addition, suitable electrical safety
measures must be provided.
The control unit is equipped with varistors to protect the electronics. It is, however, quite
possible that additional measures to cope with electric surges may be required in exposed
settings.
The treatment room must be protected from frost; a maximum temperature of 30°C should not
be exceeded. Specially designed models are necessary for higher and lower temperatures.
Rooms in which acids or the like are stored are not suitable.
The UVC disinfection system and, in particular, the control cabinet is to be protected from direct
sunlight.
If large quantities of condensation appear in the treatment room, then the room must be
equipped with a suitable air dehumidifier.
The UVC disinfection system must not be exposed to excessive dust.
The installation room should be as accessible as possible (service friendly).
The control cabinet as well as the irradiation chamber and the UVC sensor system must be
easily accessible.
A drain must be provided in the treatment room so that water that accumulates when the UVC
disinfection system is drained, bled, or flushed can be removed.
The AQUAFIDES UVC disinfection system cannot be set up outside. If this is required, a special
design is necessary.
The treatment room must have openings (doors, manholes, wall breaks, etc.) suitable for
installing the UVC disinfection system, or such openings must be planned. The dimension
sheets for the irradiation chambers and control cabinets should be consulted for this. For the
dimensions, please refer to the dimension sheets and the technical data sheets.

The control cabinet must be fitted and connected by no-one other than a licensed electrician.
Potential equalization between the control cabinet and the irradiation chamber is to be provided by
fitting a protective conductor connection. Potential equalization to a grounding strip is mandatory.
The accompanying schematic illustrates the connection to the control cabinet.

06. Initial Operation COMPACT T
Irradiation Systems
6.1 Brief Description
• Check irradiation chamber for hydraulic leaks.
• Fit UVC lamp and connect to the lamp cable.
• Connect / insert power plug into a fused power socket.
• Check UVC sensor system for leaks, and check that sensor and measuring window tube
are clean - assemble sensor system only when it is in a dry state.
• Fill irradiation chamber with water (open isolation valves) and bleed out air.
• Switch UVC disinfection system on by pressing the “Hand or Automatic” key followed by
“OK”.
• Wait until the system has powered up - operational status indicated by green LED on the
control cabinet.
• Switch disinfection system off by pressing the “OFF” key, and confirm by pressing the
“OK” key.
• Unplug UVC sensor cable.
• Switch UVC disinfection system on again (see above) - a malfunction should now be
indicated - red LED on the control cabinet. At this point, the flow of water through the
UVC disinfection system must not be turned on.
• Switch UVC disinfection system off (see above).
• Plug in UVC sensor cable.
• Restart UVC disinfection system (see above).
6.2 Initial Filling and Leak Tightness Test
Check that all hydraulic connections are properly screwed together and sealed. Before the
irradiation chamber is filled, the flanged quartz sleeve, the quartz sleeve with blank flange, and
the measuring window tube must be properly fitted.
Slowly flood the irradiation chamber with water by slowly opening the valve on the supply line.
If an automatic air bleed valve is not present, open the air bleed screw slightly, and bleed the air
from the irradiation chamber for as long as necessary, until no more air escapes.
Close the air bleed screw, and visually check the irradiation chamber for leaks at the flange
connections, the measuring window tube, and the flanged quartz sleeve.
If everything is suitably watertight, the inlet and outlet valves can be fully opened.
6.3 Fitting the UVC Lamp
Note: The flanged quartz sleeve is mounted in the irradiation chamber during manufacture!

The lamp connectors are located on the lamp flange, which is screwed onto the quartz sleeve
flange. Remove this quartz sleeve flange by undoing the two M5 pan head screws, and lay the
lamp flange down in a dry and clean place.
Carefully take the UVC lamp out of the packaging!
IMPORTANT: Grasp the UVC lamp carefully at one end (not by the glass body)!
Carefully attach the lamp connector to the ceramic socket of the lamp flange - not forcibly,
because of the risk of breakage! Make sure that this plug connection is properly seated.
Remove the lamp packaging completely (do not touch the glass body while doing so).
IMPORTANT: Before fitting the UVC lamp, check that no condensation or other water is present
in the quartz sleeve and that the UVC lamp is dry and clean. Clean and dry these if
necessary.
CAREFULLY insert the lamp into the opening in the flanged quartz sleeve, fit the lamp flange in
place, and secure it with the two M5 screws.
IMPORTANT: When working with a UVC lamp, always be careful not to subject the lamp bases
at the ends to any sideways stress because there is no replacement under
warranty for broken bases. Never touch the quartz sleeve of the UVC lamp with
bare fingers, and clean it only with a soft, silicone-free cloth. If necessary, remove
finger prints, dirt, etc. on the quartz glass with alcohol or acetone. These cleaning
fluids must be removed leaving no residue before the UVC lamp is fitted or
operated.
IMPORTANT:
The UVC lamps must not be scratched. Carry out cleaning only with soft cloths
(e.g. kitchen roll without overprint, etc.). Cloths that contain silicone, such as, e.g.,
dish towels, etc., may not be used.
Carefully insert the UVC lamp with the lamp flange into the opening of the flanged quartz
sleeve, and slowly push it all the way in. Do not use force – there is a risk of breakage! Bring
the lamp flange into the correct position so that the M5 pan head screws can be fitted. Take
care that the wires to the UVC lamp do not run directly in front of the UVC sensor. If this is the
case, rotate the lamp flange by 180° or gently twist the lamp flange cables a small amount.
6.4 Fitting and Removing the UVC Sensor and ÖNORM / DVGW Measuring
Window Tube
Note: The measuring window tube is fitted to the irradiation chamber at the factory.
The UVC sensor is delivered separately with it and must still be fitted.
CAUTION!
Take care when removing the measuring window tube. It is essential that the
UVC disinfection system be switched off to do this (master switch on 0 or power
plug pulled), and the UVC irradiation chamber must be fully depressurized before
the measuring window tube may be unscrewed.

General
• Pull power plug or, in the case of UVC disinfection systems with a master switch, turn off at the
control cabinet.
• Close isolation valves before and after the UVC disinfection system. Depending on the mode of
operation, switch the pump off or open the bypass line into the channel before starting.
• Drain the irradiation chamber until it is completely empty and zero pressure is reached.
Measuring Window Tube
• Carefully screw the measuring window tube out of the UVC irradiation chamber.
• If necessary, carry out cleaning (see “Maintenance and Service Section 7.4" for this)
• Check quartz sleeve as well as the threads of the measuring window tube and of the union nut
for damage. Do not under any circumstances fit damaged threads, because they could get
jammed. This would make the entire irradiation chamber unusable, and it would have to be
replaced. If the quartz window has cracks or any other damage, do not under any
circumstances fit it, because this could result in severe injuries and damage since the full
pressure of the water in the irradiation chamber presses on this window.
• Before screwing the measuring window tube in, check the O-ring seal for damage, and replace
if necessary.
• Lubricate the thread of the measuring window tube with grease that is approved for use in the
food industry (to prevent the stainless steel to stainless steel contact from locking), screw it into
the irradiation chamber, and tighten it without using excessive force.
UVC Sensor
• Carefully take the UVC sensor out of the packaging.
• If necessary, carry out cleaning (see “Maintenance and Service Section 7.4" for this)
• Check the thread of the measuring window tube union nut for damage.
Do not under any circumstances fit damaged threads, because these could get jammed.
• Before inserting the UVC sensor into the opening of the measuring window tube, check the O-
ring seal of the UVC sensor for damage, and replace if necessary. The UVC sensor and
measuring window tube must be completely dry before assembly.
• Insert the UVC sensor and lock into position with the union nut.
• Connect the UVC sensor cable.
• Disassemble the UVC sensor by reversing the sequence of assembly.
6.5 System Check before Initial Operation
• Check power supply.
• Check valves and UVC irradiation chamber for leaks.
• Check that air has been bled from the irradiation chamber and that all valves are open.
• Check UVC lamp connection.
• Check UVC sensor connection.
• Check control unit.
• Check system as a whole to ensure that all the requirements for trouble-free operation of the
UVC disinfection system are met.
• Switch the UVC disinfection system on - either by hand or automatically (by remote
activation).
• The UVC disinfection system is now in its power-up mode (preheating of the UVC lamp,
internal system check).
• The UVC disinfection system control cabinet indicates the operating conditions. Operation
should be enabled after about 5 - 8 minutes. This is signaled by a green LED.
• Check water throughput - after operational mode has been signaled (green LED).
• The UVC disinfection system is now operating correctly.

Irradiation Systems
7.1 Brief Description
The AQUAFIDES UVC disinfection systems are designed such that the operating status is
indicated at the control cabinet. Permanent visual monitoring of the UVC disinfection system is
therefore not required.
Coatings on the quartz sleeves, measuring windows, deterioration of the lamp, and suchlike are
monitored by the UVC sensor, signaled, and reported. Visual inspection of the coatings on the
quartz sleeves and of the measuring windows is necessary at least once a year and can be
performed by the operator him/herself. Factory-based training in the procedure for carrying out
these tasks is recommended.
The operating hours, start-ups, and UV transmission are to be monitored and recorded. The
UVC lamp is to be changed after 8,760 hours of operating time including start-ups.
AQUAFIDES offers maintenance contracts that guarantee regular professional inspections of
the UVC disinfection system and thus ensure trouble-free operation of the UVC disinfection
system.
CAUTION!
Never expose yourself to the UVC radiation without protective goggles.
Never operate the UVC lamp outside the UVC irradiation chamber.
Never look into the opening of the measuring window tube when the UVC lamp is
switched on because UVC radiation escapes through the quartz sleeve.
IMPORTANT!
Each time the protective quartz sleeves are cleaned, the measuring window tube
and the system sensor should also be cleaned.
Quartz sleeves, measuring window tube, quartz window, and quartz sensor
window must not be scratched. Carry out cleaning only with soft cloths (such as,
e.g., kitchen roll without overprint, etc.). Cloths that contain silicone, such as, e.g.,
dish towels, etc., may not be used.
The monitoring unit must be checked once a year by the manufacturer.

7.2 Changing the UVC Lamp
Note: The flanged quartz sleeve is mounted in the irradiation chamber at the factory.
IMPORTANT!
Allow the UVC lamp to cool off for at least 10 minutes before removing.
There is a risk of burns from the hot UVC lamp.
The lamp connectors are located on the lamp flange, which is screwed onto the quartz sleeve
flange. Remove this quartz sleeve flange by undoing the two M5 pan head screws, and carefully
pull out the UVC lamp on the lamp flange. As soon as the socket of the UVC lamp can be seen,
take hold of this too so that the UVC lamp does not detach itself from the lamp flange and fall
into the quartz sleeve - "danger of breakage”. Lay the lamp flange down in a dry and clean
place.
Carefully take the new UVC lamp out of the packaging.
IMPORTANT: Grasp the UVC lamp carefully at one end (not by the glass body)!
Carefully attach the lamp connector to the ceramic socket of the lamp flange - not forcibly: risk
of breakage! Make sure that the plug connection is properly seated.
Remove the UVC lamp packaging completely (do not touch the glass body while doing so!).

7.3 Removing and Refitting Flanged Quartz Sleeves (Cleaning)
The quartz sleeves must be cleaned regularly during maintenance or if the UVC sensor indicator
falls below the permissible value or advance warning value.
General
• Pull power plug or, in the case of UVC disinfection systems with a master switch, turn off at the
control cabinet.
• Close the isolation valves before and after the UVC disinfection system. Depending on the
mode of operation, switch the pump off or open the bypass line into the channel before starting.
• Drain the irradiation chamber until it is completely empty and zero pressure is reached.
IMPORTANT!
Take care with the quartz sleeve - risk of breakage and injury!
Wear appropriate cut resistant gloves!
ATTENTIO N
The protective quartz sleeve must not be scratched.
Clean only with a soft cloth (e.g. kitchen roll, etc.). Cloths incorporating fibers that
contain silicone, such as, e.g., dish towels, may not be used!
Flanged quartz sleeve
• Undo the M6 pan head screws evenly.
• Pull the flanged quartz sleeve out carefully, slowly, and evenly. At about the half-way point of
the irradiation chamber, you will notice a little resistance when pulling out the quartz sleeve.
This is the guide plate of the quartz sleeve. Carefully continue to pull out without using force -
risk of breakage!
• Check the quartz sleeve for soiling.
• In the case of light soiling, clean with a soft, clean cloth (silicone free) and some spirit or acidic
cleaning agent to remove lime scale and rust (iron coatings). Please take care that the stainless
steel parts of the flanged quartz sleeve are not corroded by this cleaning agent.
• For heavy soiling, clean with 5% acid solution (e.g. hydrochloric acid, formic acid, or other acid
cleaning agents for the removal of lime scale and iron), and rinse well with water afterwards.
The safety instructions of the products used must be noted and strictly followed.
• Dry with a clean, silicone-free cloth, and subsequently touch only with a clean cloth. The inside
of the quartz sleeve should also always be clean before fitting and, above all, should be dry. For
the inside of the quartz sleeve, it is usually sufficient to clean with a dry cloth.
• Fitting the protective quartz sleeve
• Insert the clean and dry flanged quartz sleeve carefully into the opening in the UVC irradiation
chamber. Push the quartz sleeve evenly and slowly further into the irradiation chamber. Located
roughly at the center of the irradiation chamber is a guide plate for the quartz sleeve. Carefully
insert the quartz sleeve directly through the hole in this guide plate. Slowly move the quartz
sleeve further into the irradiation chamber until the flange is almost home. The quartz sleeve
must now be inserted into the opening at the opposite side in order to ensure optimal seating.

• If the quartz sleeve should encounter resistance as it is inserted into the opposite cover of the
irradiation chamber, do not try to force it in! Take the quartz sleeve out again, and, on the
opposite side of the irradiation chamber, remove the blank flange by undoing the 4 pan head
screws. Flush out the irradiation chamber with enough water to remove any contamination that
may be present (splinters, sand, etc.).
• Before fitting the blank flange, check that the O-ring is still in satisfactory condition, and then
reattach by securing with the 4 pan head screws.
• Refit the quartz sleeve as described above.
IMPORTANT: Not forcibly, but carefully, so that the quartz sleeve does not break!
• Tighten the M6 pan head screws evenly.
7.4 UVC Sensor System (Cleaning)
Each time the protective quartz sleeves are cleaned, the measuring window tube and the
system sensor should also be cleaned.
ATTENTIO N!
The quartz glass windows in the measuring window tube and system sensors
must not be scratched. Carry out cleaning only with soft cloths (e.g. kitchen roll,
etc.) and cotton swabs.
Cloths incorporating fibers that contain silicone, such as, e.g., dish towels, may
not be used.
The UVC monitoring unit (sensor and analysis system) should be checked by the manufacturer
once a year.
General
• Pull the power plug or, in the case of UVC disinfection systems with a master switch, turn off at
the control cabinet.
• Close the isolation valves before and after the UVC disinfection system. Depending on the
mode of operation, switch the pump off or open the bypass line into the channel before starting.
• Drain the irradiation chamber until it is completely empty and zero pressure is reached.
• The UVC system sensors should be checked once a year by the manufacturer.
CAUTION!
Take care when removing the measuring window tube. It is essential that the
UVC disinfection system be switched off to do this (master switch on 0 or power
plug pulled), and the UVC irradiation chamber must be fully depressurized before
the measuring window tube may be unscrewed.
UVC Sensor
• Detach the UVC sensor cable from the UVC sensor. Take care that the cable connector does
not come into contact with water, and lay it down in a dry place.
• Undo the union nut from the measuring window tube and put it in a dry and clean place.
• Carefully pull the UVC sensor out of the measuring window tube.

• Clean with a soft, clean cloth (silicone free) and some spirit, acetone, or alcohol. Please take
care that the stainless steel parts of the UVC sensor are not corroded by the cleaning agent.
• After cleaning, wipe the UVC sensor dry with a clean cloth. Lay the UVC sensor down in a clean
and dry place.
• Check the thread of the measuring window tube union nut for damage.
Do not under any circumstances fit damaged threads, because they could get jammed.
• Before refitting the UVC sensor, the measuring window tube must be cleaned and must be
completely clean and dry inside.
• Before inserting the UVC sensor into the opening of the measuring window tube, check the O-
ring seal for damage, and replace if necessary. The UVC sensor and measuring window tube
must be completely dry before assembly.
• Insert the UVC sensor and lock into position with the union nut.
• Connect the UVC sensor cable.
Measuring Window Tube
• Carefully screw the measuring window tube out of the UVC irradiation chamber.
• Clean if necessary.
• In the case of light soiling, clean with a soft, clean cloth (silicone free) and some spirit or acidic
cleaning agent to remove lime scale and rust (iron coatings). Please take care that the stainless
steel parts of the measuring window tube are not corroded by this cleaning agent.

• Check the quartz sleeve as well as the threads of the measuring window tube and of the union
nut for damage. Do not under any circumstances fit damaged threads, because they could get
jammed. This would make the entire irradiation chamber unusable, and it would have to be
replaced. If the quartz window has cracks or any other damage, do not under any
circumstances fit it. This could result in severe injuries and damage since the full pressure of the
water in the irradiation chamber presses on this window.
• Before screwing the measuring window tube in, check the O-ring seal for damage, and replace
if necessary.
• Lubricate the thread of the measuring window tube with grease that is approved for use in the
food industry (to prevent the stainless steel to stainless steel contact from locking), screw it into
the irradiation chamber, and tighten it without using excessive force.
• After that, fit the UVC sensor as described above, and connect the UVC sensor cable.
See section 7.6 for checking system and restarting.

7.5 Checking UVC Sensor System with Reference Sensor
IMPORTANT!
The monitoring unit must be checked by the manufacturer once a year, in
accordance with ÖNORM M 5873-1.
Pressing the central “MENU” control key displays a selection menu on the LCD display.
Pressing the control keys ▼ or ▲ brings you to the "Sensor Check" menu item.
Confirm this with the “OK” key. In this operating mode, the displayed reference values in W/m2
are frozen for 240 seconds without the system shutting down.
In these 240 seconds, you have time to remove the system sensor as described in section 7.4
and compare it with a reference sensor. At the end of the 240 seconds, the system returns to its
normal operating mode.
Note: If there is no system sensor in the UVC disinfection system when the 240 seconds
are over, the system goes into malfunction mode, and the water throughput is halted.
7.6 Checking System before Restarting
• Check the power supply
• Check the valves and UVC irradiation chamber for leaks
• Check that air has been bled from the irradiation chamber and that all valves are open
• Check the UVC lamp connection
• Check the UVC sensor connection
• Check the control unit
• Check the system as a whole to ensure that all the requirements for trouble-free operation of
the UVC disinfection system are met.
• Switch the UVC disinfection system on - either by hand or automatically (by remote
activation).
• The UVC disinfection system is now in its power-up mode (preheating of the UVC lamp,
internal system check).
• The UVC disinfection system control cabinet indicates the operating status. Operation is
enabled after about 5 - 8 minutes. This is signaled by a green LED.
• Check the water throughput - after operational mode has been signaled (green LED).
• The UVC disinfection system is now operating correctly.
7.7 Malfunctions and Troubleshooting

Troubleshooting of the UVC disinfection system may be performed only by
AQUAFIDES and by its authorized personnel with the appropriate tools and in
compliance with the relevant safety regulations.

The UVC disinfection system is equipped such that it can operate fully automatically. Malfunction
reports are either displayed or, if appropriate, may be relayed over the connected links for remote
transmission. Periodic inspections are, nevertheless, obligatory. All of the operating parameters
are to be entered in the operating log when these inspections are carried out.

the unfiltered water with quartz cuvettes in a spectral photometer (following DIN 38404, Part 3).

Copy the first page of this instruction manual with the attached type labels and use it as
the cover page for the running operating log.
Use “11.2 Operating Log (Master Copy)” as a template for duplication and so compile a
complete operating log.
Please enter items 10.1.2 to 10.1.12 into the "10.2 Operating Log".
10.1.1. Name of Responsible Person
Please enter the name of the person responsible for the system as well as his/her
stand-in with telephone numbers at the top right in the field “System Manager” and
“System Deputy” (in block letters).
