Properties of Water Lab Report Guide

The student conducted an experiment to investigate the cohesive property of water by measuring how many water drops a penny could hold. The student hypothesized that a penny could hold about 10 drops of water. Through three trials, the student found that the penny held 9, 6, and 15 drops, averaging to 10 drops. While the highest amount of drops held was 15, which was greater than the original hypothesis, the student concluded that the hypothesis was supported overall since the average was 10 drops as predicted.

Properties of Water Lab Report

Instructions: Investigate the properties of water by choosing one experiment to conduct. Use the
following lab template to ensure all lab report components are included. Submit your lab report
to your instructor when completed.

Objective(s):
Identify the purpose of your investigation or the question you are attempting to answer. Be sure
to tie in the property of water you are testing.

Background Knowledge:
Polarity and hydrogen bonding are two key factors that contribute to the unique properties of
water.

Safety Notes:

• Always have parent(s) or guardian(s) permission and supervision when

performing a lab activity at home.
• Wash your hands before and after handling lab materials.
• It is important to always protect your eyes during lab activities. Wear
protective goggles whenever possible.
• When working at the kitchen counter or table, be sure to protect the
workspace from spills and immediately clean up any splashes or spills.
• All materials in this lab activity are safe to dispose in the garbage (solids)
and down the drain (liquids only).

Experiment: INVETIGATING COHESION

Title: cohesion AND THE ABILITY OF WATER MOLECULES COMBINIG WITH
EACHOTHER
Objective: HOW MANY DROPS CAN A PENNY HOLD
Hypothesis: I BELIEVE ABOUT 10 DROPS

Variables:
• Independent Variable: WAS THE SIDE OF THE PENNY
• Dependent Variable:HOW MANY DROPS WOULD FIT ON THE
PENNY
• Controlled Variable: THE PENNY WITH NO WATER

Materials: WATER , PAPER TOWEL , SOMETHING TO EXCERT THE WATER , A

PENNY

Procedure:
The procedure should be clear and detailed, so that others can repeat it. The details should be
specific in how the procedure changes the independent variable, controls all variables that need
to be controlled, and observes or measures the resulting changes to the dependent variable.
Data and Observations:
Present all data and observations in a neat and organized manner. Include tables and graphs
where appropriate/possible.
Investigative Reflection Question:
Investigative Reflection Question:
TRIAL 1 : 9
TRIAL2: 6
TRIAL3: 15
AVERAGE: 10
Conclusion:
Include the following as a summary paragraph in the conclusion of your lab report:

• Analysis of the results of the experiment

• Rationale for the support or rejection of the hypothesis
• Description of how the investigation could be tested further

Conclusion:
In my hypothesis I stated that I thought the penny could only hold 10 drops but overall the
highest amount I got was 15 drops on the penny

Questions:
Answer these questions in complete sentences using evidence from your investigation.
• The properties of water are an essential part of what makes water unique.
What affect does the properties of water have on Earth’s surface and its systems?
• How does water’s molecular structure affect solubility of substances on
Earth? Provide a real-world example.? WATER CAN BECOME A SUBSTANCE THAT
POSITIVELY OR NEGATIVELY CHARGED MOLECULE WHICH MAKES THE
SOLUBILITY OF WIDE RANGE OF SUBSTANCE
• Explain how all the properties of water are related. Provide an example to
describe the interconnectivity of each property. Be sure to include hydrogen bonding,
polarity, surface tension, capillary action, cohesion, adhesion, high specific heat, and
expansion upon freezing.
