(REGULATIONS 2011)

Time: 3 Hours Maximum: 100 Marks

Answer ALL the questions

PART – A (10 X 2 = 20 Marks)

1. Why tight side of the flat belt should be at the bottom side of the pulley?
2. What is meant by chordal action in chain drives?
3. State the law of gearing.
4. Identify the factors influencing on backlash in gear drive.
5. State the virtual number of teeth in bevel gear design.
6. Predict the reason for irreversibility in worm gear.
7. Define the term ‘geometric progression’.
8. Give some applications of constant mesh gear box.
9. Name the different friction materials used in friction clutches.
10. Why automobile brake is not effective when the vehicle moving in reverse direction?

PART – B (5 X 16 = 80 Marks)
11. a) An open flat belt drive connects two parallel shafts 1.2 m apart. The driving and driven shafts rotate
at 350 r.p.m. and 140 r.p.m. respectively and the driven pulley is 400 mm in diameter. The power
to be transmitted is 1.1 kW. Design the required flat belt drive.
(OR)
11. b) A 7.5 kW electric motor running at 1400 r.p.m. is used to drive the input shaft of the gear box of a
special purpose machine. Design a suitable roller chain to connect the motor shaft to the gear box
shaft to give an exact speed ratio of 10 to 1. Assume the minimum centre distance between driver
and driven shafts as 600mm.

12. a) Design a pair of spur gears with the following data. Power to be transmitted = 15000 kW, Speed of
the pinion = 450 r.p.m., Speed of wheel = 80 r.p.m., Centre distance should be less than 1.5 m,
Assume the life of gear is 10, 000 hours.
(OR)
12. b) A general purpose enclosed gear train is based on parallel helical gears; specified life is 36,000 hours.
Torque at driven shaft is 411 N-m. Driving shaft speed is 475 rpm. Velocity ratio is 4. It is desired
to have standard centre distance. Design the required helical gear drive.

13. a) Design a bevel gear drive to transmit 7.36 kW at 1440 rpm for the following data. Gear ratio = 3,
Material for pinion and gear C45 surface hardened.
(OR)
13. b) A steel worm running at 240 r.p.m. receives 1.5 kW from its shaft. The speed reduction is 10:1.
Design the drive so as to have an efficiency of 80%. Also determine the cooling area required, if
the temperature rise is restricted to 45°C. Take overall heat transfer coefficient as 10 W/m2°C.
14. a) A gear box is to be designed with the following specifications. Power = 14.72 kW, Number of
speeds = 18, Minimum speed = 16 rpm, step ratio = 1.25, Motor speed = 1400 r.p.m. The eighteen
speeds are obtained as 2 x 3 x 3. Sketch the layout of the gear box and the speed diagram. Calculate
number of teeth on each gear.
(OR)
14. b) Draw the kinematic diagram and speed diagram of the headstock gear box of a turret lathe having
arrangement for 9 spindle speeds ranging from 31.5 to 1050 rpm. Calculate the number of teeth on
each gear. Minimum number of teeth on a gear is 25. Also calculate the percentage of deviation of
the obtained speeds from the calculated ones.

15. a) A multiple disc wet clutch is to be designed for a machine tool driven by an electric motor of
12.455 kW running at 1400 r.p.m. Space restrictions limit the outside disc diameter to 100 mm.
Determine appropriate values for disc inside diameter, total number of discs, and clamping force.
(OR)
15. b) i) Differentiate between brake and clutch.
ii) Describe with the help of a neat sketch the principles of operation of an internal expanding shoe
brake.
