c. Energize a visual indicator(s) outside the hazard in which the discharge
occurred
d. Energize a "System Fired" audible device
4. The system shall be capable of being actuated by manual discharge devices located at
each hazard exit. Operation of a manual device shall duplicate the sequence
description above except that the time-delay and abort functions shall be bypassed.
The manual discharge station shall be of the electrical actuation type and shall be
supervised at the main control panel.

1.9 MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT

A. The NOVEC 1230 Clean Agent System materials and equipment shall be standard products
of the supplier's latest design and suitable to perform the functions intended. When one or
more pieces of equipment must perform the same function(s), they shall be duplicates
produced by one manufacturer.
1. All devices and equipment shall be U.L. Listed and/or FM approved

B. Each system shall have its own supply of clean agent.

1. The system design can be modular, central storage, or a combination of both design
criteria.
2. Systems shall be designed in accordance with the manufacturer's guidelines.
3. Each supply shall be located within the hazard area, or as near as possible, to reduce
the amount of pipe and fittings required to install the system.
4. Containers shall be of high-strength alloy steel construction and conform to NFPA
2001.
5. Containers shall be actuated by parallel wired initiators.
6. Each container shall have a pressure gauge and low pressure switch to provide visual
and electrical supervision of the container pressure. The low pressure switch shall be
wired to the control panel to provide an audible and visual "Trouble" alarm in the
event the container pressure drops below 1986 kPa. The pressure gauge shall be color
coded to provide an easy, visual indication of container pressure.
7. Each container shall have a pressure relief provision that automatically operates when
the internal temperature exceeds 66°C.
8. Engineered discharge nozzles shall be provided, within the manufacturers guidelines,
to distribute the NOVEC 1230 agent throughout the protected spaces.
9. Distribution piping, and fittings, shall be installed in accordance with the
manufacturer's requirements, NFPA 2001 and approved piping standards and
guidelines. All distribution piping shall be installed by qualified individuals using
good, accepted practices and quality procedures. All piping shall be adequately
supported and anchored at all directional changes and nozzle locations.
a. All piping shall be reamed, blown clear and swabbed with suitable solvents to
remove burrs, mill varnish and cutting oils before assembly.
b. All pipe threads shall be sealed with Teflon tape pipe sealant applied to the
male thread only.

Intelligent Fire Alarm Control Panels

General
The NFS-320 intelligent Fire Alarm Control Panel is part of the
ONYX® Series of Fire Alarm Controls from NOTIFIER.
In stand-alone or network configurations, ONYX Series products
meet virtually every application requirement.
Designed with modularity and ease of system planning, the
NFS-320 can be configured with just a few devices for small

Intelligent Plug-In Photoelectric
Intelligent/Addressable Devices

General

[Link]
Notifier 851 Series intelligent plug-in smoke detectors with
integral communication provide features that surpass conven-
tional detectors. Detector sensitivity can be programmed in
the control panel software. Sensitivity is continuously moni-
tored and reported to the panel. Point ID capability allows
each detector’s address to be set with decade address
switches, providing exact detector location for selective main-
tenance when chamber contamination reaches an unaccept-
able level. The FSP-851 photoelectric detector’s unique
optical sensing chamber is engineered to sense smoke pro- FSP-851 with B710LP base

detector for use with DNR(W) duct detector housings.
FSP-851 series detectors are compatible with all ONYX
series Notifier intelligent Fire Alarm Control Panels (FACP).
FlashScan® (U.S. Patent 5,539,389) is a communication pro-
tocol developed by Notifier that greatly increases the speed of
communication between analog intelligent devices. Intelligent
devices communicate in a grouped fashion. If one of the
devices in the group has new information, the panel’s CPU
stops the group poll and concentrates on single points. The
FSP-851T with B710LP base
net effect is response speed greater than five times that of ear-
lier designs.

Control and Relay Modules
Intelligent / Addressable Devices

General
FCM-1(A) Control Module: The FCM-1(A) Addressable Con-
trol Module provides Notifier intelligent fire alarm control pan-
els a circuit for Notification Appliances (horns, strobes,
speakers, etc.) Addressability allows the FCM-1(A) to be acti-
vated, either manually or through panel programming, on a
select (zone or area of coverage) basis.
FRM-1(A) Relay Module: The FRM-1(A) Addressable Relay
Module provides the system with a dry-contact output for acti-
vating a variety of auxiliary devices, such as fans, dampers,
control equipment, etc. Addressability allows the dry contact to
be activated, either manually or through panel programming,
on a select basis.
FlashScan® (U.S. Patent 5,539,389) is a communication pro-
tocol developed by NOTIFIER Engineering that greatly
enhances the speed of communication between analog intelli-

gent devices. Intelligent devices communicate in a grouped
fashion. If one of the devices within the group has new infor-
mation, the panel CPU stops the group poll and concentrates
on single points. The net effect is response speed greater than
five times that of other designs.

FMM-1, FMM-101,
FZM-1 & FDM-1
Monitor Modules with FlashScan®
Intelligent/Addressable Devices

General
Four different monitor modules are available for Notifier’s intel-
ligent control panels for a variety of applications. Monitor mod-
ules supervise a circuit of dry-contact input devices, such as
conventional heat detectors and pull stations, or monitor and
power a circuit of two-wire smoke detectors (FZM-1).
FMM-1 is a standard-sized module (typically mounts to a 4"
[10.16 cm] square box) that supervises either a Class A (Style
D) or Class B (Style B) circuit of dry-contact input devices.
FMM-101 is a miniature monitor module (a mere 1.3" (3.302
cm) H x 2.75" (6.985 cm) W x 0.5" (1.270 cm) D) that super-
vises a Class B (Style B) circuit of dry-contact input devices.
Its compact design allows the FMM-101 to often be mounted
in a single-gang box behind the device it monitors.
FZM-1 is a standard-sized module that monitors and super-

vises compatible two-wire, 24 volt, smoke detectors on a
Class A (Style D) or Class B (Style B) circuit.
FDM-1 is a standard-sized dual monitor module that monitors
and supervises two independent two-wire Style B (Class B)
dry-contact initiating device circuits (IDCs) at two separate, FMM-1 (Type H)

The FZM-1 Interface Module is intended for use in intelligent,
addressable systems, where the individual address of each
module is selected using built-in rotary switches. This module
allows intelligent panels to interface and monitor two-wire con-
ventional smoke detectors. It transmits the status (normal,
open, or alarm) of one full zone of conventional detectors back
to the control panel. All two-wire detectors being monitored
must be UL compatible with the module. The FZM-1 can be
used to replace MMX-2 modules in existing systems.

points, starting with the original address. For example, if the
FDM-1 is set to address “26”, then it will automatically assign
itself to addresses “26” and “27”.
NOTE: “Ones” addresses on the FDM-1 are 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8 only.
Terminals 6 and 7 use the first address, and terminals 8 and 9 use
the second address.

CAUTION:
! Avoid duplicating addresses on the system.

Installation
FMM-1, FZM-1, and FDM-1 modules mount directly to a stan-
dard 4" (10.16 cm) square, 2.125" (5.398 cm) deep, electrical
box. They may also be mounted to the SMB500 surface-mount
box. Mounting hardware and installation instructions are pro-
vided with each module. All wiring must conform to applicable
local codes, ordinances, and regulations. These modules are

FCM-1-REL(A)
Releasing Control Module

Intelligent/Addressable Devices

General
The FCM-1-REL Releasing Control Module is specifically
designed for fire suppression releasing applications in Flash-
Scan® systems. Power to the release agent solenoid(s) runs
through the module for full-time monitoring and supervision.
The FCM-1-REL Releasing Control Module uses a redun-
dant protocol; the module must be armed with a pair of sig-
nals in order to activate. It will then enter a 3-second window
awaiting a pair of confirmation signals. If no confirmation is
received, the module will automatically reset. It also super-
vises the wiring to the connected load and reports the status
to the panel as NORMAL, OPEN, or SHORT CIRCUIT. The
module has two pairs of output termination points available
for fault-tolerant wiring and a panel-controlled LED indicator.
The module may be connected to either one 24VDC solenoid
or up to two 12VDC solenoids (in series). To ensure proper
operation, this module shall be connected to a compatible
Notifier system control panel only (list available from Notifier).

[Link]
In addition, please refer to Notifier Device Compatibility Doc-
ument PN 15378 for the list of compatible solenoids.
NOTE: FCM-1-REL is required for all new FlashScan-mode
releasing applications with NFS2-3030 (version 14.0 or higher),
NFS2-640 (version 12.0 or higher) and NFS-320(E)(C) (version

General
System Sensor’s SSM Series alarm bells are low-current,
high-decibel notification appliances for use in fire and burglary
systems or other signaling applications. They come pre-wired
to reduce installation time, and also incorporate a polarized
electrical design for use with supervision circuitry.
With reliable performance, SSM Series alarm bells provide
loud, resonant tones. They operate on 24 VDC and are motor-
driven.
SSM Series alarm bells offer simplified installation. For indoor
use, SSM Series alarm bells mount to a standard 4" (10.16

Intelligent/Addressable Devices

General
The Notifier ISO-X Fault Isolator Module is used with the NFS-
3030, NFS2-3030, NFS-640, NFS2-640, NFS-320, and AFP-
200 to protect the system against wire-to-wire short circuits on
the SLC loops.

Features
• Powered by SLC loop directly, no external power required.
• Mount in standard 4.0" (10.16 cm) square (2.125" [5.398
cm] deep) junction boxes.
• Integral LED blinks to indicate normal condition. Illuminates
steady when short circuit condition is detected.
• High noise (EMF/RFI) immunity.

• Wide viewing angle of LED.
• SEMS screws with clamping plates for ease of wiring.
• Opens SLC loop automatically on detection of short, pre-
venting the short from causing failure of the entire loop.
• Automatically resets on correction of short.
• Supports Style 4, 6, or 7 wiring.

Liquid Level Indicator

The liquid level indicator is used to measure the level of liq-

uid Novec™ 1230 agent in the tanks. The amount (weight)
of agent is determined by converting the level measure-
ment into a weight measurement using the weight conver-
sion tables located in this manual.
The liquid level is found by lifting the measuring tape from
inside the tube to the end (or approximately 3 in. above the
anticipated liquid level) and slowly lowering the tape until a
magnetic interlock with the float is felt. The tape will then
remain in the up position, allowing a reading at the top of
the housing. This measurement is accomplished without
removing the tank from the fire suppression system.
The indicator can be installed in empty tanks with the prop-
er port or tanks can be ordered with the indicator already
installed.

Manifold Check Valves

The manifold check valve is designed to prevent a loss of

agent during a discharge in the event that a tank has been
removed from the system. The check valve is a “mushroom”
type, which lifts into the manifold as discharge occurs.
Two sizes of manifold check valves are available: 1 in. and
2 in.
Manifold are constructed of standard Schedule 40 pipe and
300 lb. fittings. The check valves assemble directly into the
fittings.

The 24 VDC electric actuator is required to electrically actu- 1 IN. BSP

ate the tank valve. An electric signal is required from the
AUTOPULSE Control panel which operates the solenoid in
the actuator. This causes the actuator to open the tank
valve and discharge the agent. On multiple tank systems,
only one actuator is required, on the master valve. The
remaining tanks will be actuated pneumatically through
1/4 in. stainless steel hose and a pneumatic actuator
installed on the top of each tank valve.
The actuator draw is 0.2A.
Note: Composite cap attached to actuator is used as the

knurled swivel coupling until cap threads are completely

engaged. A small “click” will be heard while resetting. 006763

Low Pressure Switch

The low pressure switch is used to indicate a pressure drop

within the SAPPHIRE tank. The switch is factory mounted
(must be specified when ordering tank) in the 1/8 in. switch
port of the tank valve. The switch continuously monitors the
tank pressure and in the event of the pressure dropping 000716

below 290 psi (20 bar), the switch operates, enabling the
condition to be signaled at the control panel.
The low pressure switch is optional and must be ordered
separately when ordering the SAPPHIRE tank.
